Might be a stupidish question but....

I am running a Raid 6 on an ARC-1230 with 6x 500GB WD Green power drives. I use this setup mainly as storage but was wondering what to do about defragmenting it. Currently it's 27% Fragmented (according to windows) and as i'm sure with a raid 6 and almost 1.5 TB full that a defrag might take days. Is it even worth it? Should I bother.

Thought/ Suggestions?

Actually I would think the defrag would not take all that much longer than a regular drives due to the fact that the ARC-1230 isn't even being maxed out (bandwidth wise) by your 6 drives. I would do it to keep the performance good on my array.

Use Vopt9, PerfectDisk would probably take DAYS and Diskeeper is just not that thorough.

The defrag won't take that long. Sometimes my 6 disk 5TB RAID5 array gets a bit fragged. Takes just a few hours to defrag depending on the method and amount fragged.

Defragging always helps! I just defragged my 3 TB XFS array yesterday, and I can see improvements already.

I defragged my 9.1TB array (XFS) a little while ago, noticeable improvements, took about two days total, using the built-in xfs defrag tool, from 95% to 1.5% fragmented...

I'll try again tonight, Vopt9 looks interesting i'll give that a shot. When I attempted a defrag before it went for about 8hrs and moved 1%. Given it was the Windows Defrag, but still.
