For the members of my site, I'm looking to build a small server that can host Minecraft, steam servers, like Team Fortress, and retro game servers like Quake.

I'm looking for some advice. To start, I'm looking to spend around $500, less is fine, a small amount more is fine too. I'm assuming my best bet will be ebay parts to get the most of my money, and I have no problem with that. If it was built in a way that it could be upgraded later, I.E. 2p board with only one filled to start, that would be perfect. I do not need a case, as it will be in a spare 4u case, rackmounted. I also don't need ram, provided non-ecc ram can be used. (most boards I believe.) I also have no preference of AMD/Intel, and power draw is not an issue.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)

That way you don't need to worry about internet / firewall issues at your house and it'll run 24/7. If you want to get a server though, you can get a good, used server for that price on craigslist. Granted I was living in SF at the time, but I got a i7 920 + 24GB of RAM, RE4 1TB drive in a 2u chassis for $500 more than a year ago. I'm sure you can get better than that now.

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? UEFI? etc.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?

US. South Houston area of Texas.
Exact parts, motherboard, processor, power supply (possibly) hard drive(s) and ram, if the motherboard supports ECC only.
I'd be reusing an optical drive, a 4u case, and possibly ddr3 ram. I have lots of old power supplies laying around, but they're budget ones that I'd rather not reuse.
I plan on collecting the parts within the month.
RAID is probably the only thing needed for the motherboard, but I imagine most support it at this point.
I have legit keys for XP, XP Pro (64bit) Vista(64bit) and Windows 7 (64 and 32 bit) I'm also not opposed to using *nix OSes, as I plan on putting a handful of VM's to group servers into.
 
Will this be co-located somewhere or just at a regular person's home?
What's the model number of that RAM?

It will be located at a business, behind a dedicated firewall.
For the ram, I've got a handful of matched pairs, 2 and 4gb sticks.

All of it is 1333 stuff.
 
I'm trying to figure that out now. Space shouldn't be a huge issue though, with just being a game server. I'm thinking either some refurbed 73gb Cheetahs, or just some standard, cheap 250GB drive in raid.

Why would you choose a single SSD, out of curiosity?
I imagine bandwidth would be a limiting factor way before disk I/O, and with two mechanical drives I could get redundancy.
