Dedicated PS for video cards

Why is it that there are no dedicated power supplies for video cards?

Why do you need to replace your perfectly working 500w PS with a 600 or 1kw just so you can use a GTX470 or SLI 480?.

Wouldn't it make more sense to make 400 or 500w PS for say SLI 480 or 5970 quadfire?

I remember when I got a Geforce FX5900, I've used a 200w ATX to feed it and overclock it. IIRC I had a 300w PS and it was not enough for the power hungry card.
 
I have used those power express units from Thermaltake they seem to do there job pretty well

There were a few others actually, by FSP for example. But again, they weren't popular and they were really not of that good quality. In addition, most of the time it was cheaper to just buy a new PSU that was more than likely of better quality than those GPU power supplies.
 
Can't you just use a standard power supply as a dedicated video card power supply with a minor mod?
 
you just need to run a wire from the green on your system power supply to the green on the one you want to use as a dedicated,and have both units grounded and it should work
 
These would save me the hassle and pain of a more expensive psu and tearing down and re-sheathing the cables in my system and it fits in a drive bay!! Not a bad idea for those that don't want to buy a megawatt beast for gpu upgrades.

Be aware that video cards pull 75W from the motherboard slot, and the rest (if needed) from the PCI-E power cords. I would assume this means you would need to turn on the dedicated PSU first and then the rest of the computer. I don't know if there are any issues with a video card receiving power from two different PSUs besides that.
 
I used to have one of the aforementioned Thermaltake power supplys powering 2 x1900xtx's back in the day. It crapped out in 6 months. Then I just bought an expensive high-quality 1200 Watter and never looked back and won't need to for quite some time.
 
A higher watt PSU is going to run with less load than two smaller PSU. ie get 1200 use 750 it will run at close to 90% efficient due to less heat and stress on the unit.
