decreasing read/write speeds

lol OP, it would help if you gave us some specs on your system, OS, etc. and what kind of slow down you are seeing. For all we know you have a lot of malware on your system making it slow.

implying that HD Tune is malware.

what i'm wondering is why when i run something like HD Tune, my read/write speed decreases over time.

How the fuck am I or anyone here supposed to know you are using HD Tune??? Nothing in your first post stated that you used it.

Give us some specs on your system like I stated, otherwise we can't really help.

Until he gives us more info, there is really no way to tell in his case.

Well if your using a traditional harddrive that spins the out edge of the disk is the fastest part and the inner part of the disk is the slowest. So HDTune results will tend to show a downward graph as the the speed of the drive will drop as it reads data from the outer edge to the inner portion of the disk.

And yeah I agree with everyone else, if you want to get an answer you need to know how to ask a question by providing details.

It could also be disk fragmentation or lack of TRIM support but the op seems to be intent on being as vague as possible.

If you're talking about the HDTune graph dropping off, it's due to the fact that the outer tracks of a platter have a larger circumference than the inner tracks. The outer tracks can hold more data, so you can access more data in the same amount of time (1 rotation). It's the same as putting larger diameter tires on a vehicle, which will lead to covering more ground per rotation of the axle.

If you're talking about something else, you need to do a better job explaining your question.

aka "Your system is functioning within normal parameters."

Hard drives are fast at the beginning of the usable storage area (the outer portions of the platters) and as the heads move inward towards the spindle (inner portions) the throughput for read and write operations decreases.

OP did say "hard drive" and not SSD so...

NEXT!!!
