Hey all, I'm trying to get into some "nice" style headphones, I've been normally using cheap usb headsets, or plantronics gaming style headsets. Now I'd like to get into a better sound type category. I've already ordered a Zalman clip on mic. I'm also using an older Audigy 2 ZS card, and the choices im looking at for headphones are:

Audio Technica ATH-AD700 $80

JVC HA-RX900 $50ish

Now these are mainly going to be for chatting with friends online, gaming, possibly some movies. And definately some music (pretty much all styles.) I do not have a amplifier for the cans, but I may later upgrade to a Forte 7.1 that includes the lil amp. If anyone can help make the decision a bit easier for me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

$80 for the ad700 is a pretty good deal.. i find the velvet pads + 2 head pads (?) to be very comfortable and it doesn't get too warm after long use

spec wise the ad700 has a slightly bigger 5-30kHz vs jvc 7-26kHz, i haven't tried the rx900's but i would suspect that the bass is a bit heavier with those headphones since it's semi-closed

others have confirmed that both of these do not require a headphone amp to drive

The AT AD700s are very easy to drive, so try them out with your current sound card. They are great for gaming, have a huge wide open soundstage, and are fairly neutral, so kind of a jack of all trades with music. They are also incredibly comfortable, and can easily wear them for hours watching movies, and listening to music without discomfort or fatigue. I love my pair, best money I have ever spent.

The only thing to consider is that the AT AD700s are an open-back design, so there will be sound leakage (others can hear what you are listening to, and noise from your environment leaks in). If that is an issue, go with the JVC, or consider the AT A700s.

The JVC's will have more bass, the AD700's will have more detail and soundstage. I think those are the main differences.

Thanks everyone, yeah the open design on the ad700's is okay for my setup. I do enjoy some bass but I'm thinking i'd rather have a better soundstage and better detail.

Thanks again!

Ya im looking at the ad700 and the sen HD555. Still leaning towards the ad700. They look so huge though in pictures and comparisons and I have a small head.

yeah, thats the only thing i'm also worried about. I don't have a big head, In fitted hats I wear more a M/L rather than L/XL so when they arrive im hoping they'll fit okay.

let me know, i has a small head too. also where di you find them for $80? ebay?

It looks like amazon just sold out of them. They were selling from amazon directly for 81.xx. Looks like j&r has them for 90. Im still debating. Come back to the thread when u get them.

I think it's worth considering the HA-RX700 if you wanna save some cash, several people that tried both actually preferred the RX700 for gaming, rock music, and such over the RX900... I've never listened to the RX900 but the comments seemed to indicate the bass wasn't as tight and the wider soundstage wasn't necessarily as enjoyable. There's a few mods you can do to either, HeadFi.org's a good place to hit up for some opinions of owners of either.
