I need a new wifi adapter or dongle. What ones can you recommend in that price range? Or what kind of wifi adapter/dongle should I get for the best signal? :)

I know wifi is not ideal & that ethernet is the best, but that's not an option for where this computer is going to be.

Thanks for your time. :)

Where is the computer located? You ideally want to have something with an omnidirectional antenna (or multiple ones) to pick up various signals.

it'll be in a bedroom.. the router/modem is in the living room.. to get to the bedroom via wired connection would require drilling through 2 closets, an under stair storage area & then having cord stretch from the exit hole to the opposite side of the room. lol so it'd be a hassle... and i don't own the house.. so, not really an option to be drilling holes through everything. xD

that said.. the router itself is only located 1 room away... there's just some stairs & a couple closets stuffed in between the living room & the bedroom. :)

and thank you, 450, i appreciate your response & the link. :) i'll have a gander! :D

It's a little trickier to set up, but I'd suggest checking the compatible list for DD-WRT and find a cheap router on ebay that matches the list (there are tons of options). I think I picked mine up for 10 - 15 bucks. You can set that up to be a Wireless Bridge which gives you the added bonus of being able to easily use a LAN for file transfers, etc.

Dangman, I have a Belkin router.. N750 DB Wireless N+ Router, Model # F9K1130V1

Jonz, I just found out about DD-WRT, Tomato & OpenWRT not too long ago (through reading this amazingly awesome forum, no less! lol).

I'd really like to set it up, but am not confident in my ability to do so. lol In all fairness, I haven't really looked up much on HOW to do it, but I do know that if you don't do it right, then you basically block everything & that would be a very bad thing. xD I'm scared!

Outside of me being a fradey cat, I'm with you, 100%!! I'd love to set that up!!! A whole house ad-free!.. *fans herself off* Amazing!

I am curious if it would block those "enter the text/phrase below" things on XBMC? Or do those get through okay?

Okie dokie, thank you everybody for your help & ideas! :)

saw this.. has a little better antennae on it & is slightly less expensive. think that'd be decent? :)

i also looked up my router on DD-WRT & it doesn't look like it's compatible. :/ darn the luck. lol any recommendations on a good one for doing that when i get the opportunity?

okie dokie, thank you again. :)

I have the Rosewill RNX-N180UBE. I upgraded it to a 10db antenna. The range is absolutely amazing. The stock antenna has a good range as well.

i didn't see your post til after i posted, sorry! lol

i was looking at that one initially, actually! everybody seems to love it to pieces from the reviews i have read. :)

thank you for the link to a better antenna, too. :D i don't know if i'd need one, as i'm just 1 room away (and a couple closets lol) but, it's nice to have the option available. :D

how far away from your router are you?

I'm one floor down and about 25 feet away. I have a 97% connection to my router. I pick up about 44 (yes, I counted once lol) other networks around the neighborhood with mine. I think you would be fine with the stock antenna though.
