I have an USB memory stick (Corsair Data Traveler 16GB) that seems to have a problem, might even be dead. It that holds important data!!
It was working fine, but now, when i insert it a message regarding formatting pops up:
You need to format the disk in drive H: before you can use it
do you want to format it?

I had my share of dead USB memories, and it was pretty much straight forward, you insert the memory stick and nothing happens, but in this case, it just gives me a formatting popup.
Scandisk doesn't work in this case, i get this error message
The disk could not be performed because Windwos can't access the disk

I don't want to format the thing, just get my data back, What are my options? Is there any software that i can use to check this? or should i go to a data recovery service?

I used GetDataBack on an iron key the other day. try it. ;) free trial btw.

and yah, whats up with these damn corsair USB sticks? I've had 5 voyager 16GB sticks (out of 10) die on me; what sux is, my company's policy is to destroy storage devices if they go bad, not RMA, lol. gfg.

well i didn't work. The memory stick in not "visible" to the program, i've also used EasyRecovery Pro, but no luck :(

hm... does the format choice give you the option to do a quick format?

nope, no quick format. :(

I was thinking about quick format the drive to have access to it, then use some data recovery software to get my data back, but apparently the only option it gives me is to do a normal format

Yah, as a last resort, i'd try that (formatting it with the same fs it had earlier, then try data recovery again). Though, i'd look for other options first, but i'm all out of ideas right now, sorry.

try a live install of linux & see if you can access the data

Try to use it on other machines. I had one that wanted to reformat on my personal laptop, but was fine on my work laptop and work workstation.
