Would someone please explain to me the difference between these two games? If you had to chose only one, which one would you get?

One is a 3rd person pure shooter focused on shooting scary ass aliens, the other is a 3rd person action RPG focused on story and character interaction. Big difference.

Mass Effect by far.

Game play isn't remotely the same. Dead Space is almost a survival horror shooter, while Mass Effect is a space opera / RPG / action shooter. Mass Effect has more replay value, more weapons, armor customization. Richer character interactions, actual user interaction in conversations, etc. Also as for game length, Mass Effect is more than 30 hours long. Dead Space is 10 hours or so long. Combat controls, combat mechanics and pretty much everything else is better in Mass Effect. About the only things these games share in common is that they are both third person shooters, and they take place in space. That's about it.

Now that being said, Dead Space is a great game. I enjoyed both Dead Space 1 & 2. They do the horror genre real justice as I've rarely seen it done half as well in a video game. Both are worth your money, but Mass Effect is the better value and the more fun game if I had to pick just one.

Completely different games. Massively different. Other than being Sci-Fi with a third person perspective, they have almost nothing in common.

One's a fairly straightforward linear shooter and ends the same way every time, the other has a maze of complex options and ends the same way every time.

:p

Dead Space is a 3rd person shooter / Horror game with emphasis on the action, Mass Effect is a 3rd person shooter / RPG with emphasis on the story.

I'd probably choose Mass Effect simply because your looking at 30-40hrs of game play to beat the game, while Dead Space is around 8-10hrs.

They are both worth playing, and they're also on sale often enough that there's no reason not to own both.

Actually, since Dead Space 1 and 2 are on sale now on Steam for $5 a piece I'd start with Dead Space. Just know that DS2 is a lot more polished than 1 if your only going to buy one.

Main strengths,

Dead Space: Satisfyingly visceral and gory combat, tense atmosphere, meaningful weapon upgrades, new game+ (for DS2).
Mass Effect: Great RPG storyline with interesting characters, multiple endings, long game, weak combat comparatively.

That's a close one as they're my 2 all time favorite games. Mass Effect would have to be my pick tho cause its a little more engrossing, you've got better characters and a little better atmosphere. Dead Space is a masterpiece too. If I lost my copy of either 1 or 2 today, I'd go pay $60 for a new copy immediately. I give ME a 9.75/10 and Dead Space a 9.5/10.

Dead Space is a linear third person shooter of the horror variety. The narrative is told mostly through found documents and communication with other people.

Mass Effect is an action RPG that features choices that effect the storyline (even from game to game via importing saves) and an epic storyline.

Dead Space, being an TPS (Third Person Shooter) is of course about the game play and about horror. Mass Effect is all about story and consequences. If you like horror shooters that are mostly linear, then Dead Space is for you. If you want an RPG with storytelling and a decent combat system then Mass Effect is for you.

Personally between the two I prefer Mass Effect. The games are also linked, so if you get all three you can import your saves so that the decisions you made between games will alter the game world. It isn't a prerequisite for the game (if you want you can jump in to ME3) but it's nifty.

I actually wanted them to go RPG with Dead Space. That could have been great.

Hell yeah! That would be am awesome game! Keep the combat as it is (I'm one of the few that didn't mind the controls) but give it a RPG element and storyline to it. It wouldn't be too hard because the story is already pretty damn good and could be expanded on pretty well. Best of all, you could romance Elly. I'd wreck that chick.....even with 1 eye! :D

Agreed, I actually posted something similar awhile back into a thread asking about games you'd like to see RPG'ized. The whole premise and background of the necromorphs and how they came about really is a great story that deserves to be expanded upon.

It would have made perfect sense, what with needing to get new gear and upgrading the stuff you had. I think they would need to make it similar to Dark Souls, due to the setting and how few NPCs there would be.

Dead Space was great up until it made me nauseous. I think it was the first game that made me nauseous so it really snuck up on me, played for a few hours not noticing anything, got up to get a drink and was uncharacteristically dizzy, sat down and went to start playing again and within seconds it was making my head spin and stomach churn.

They also fucked up the PC controls something terrible.

Other than that it was a good game :p

Dead space = linear space shooter... you play it once, your done the story doesn't change

Mass effect (more so in 2, and 3) = new game each time you play.. unless you do everything the same, entire cut scenes, plots, things that happen in the universe change when you replay it...

definitely ME gets my vote for which to play... Tho the non-static story makes it hard to talk about with others, since they might have no clue what your talking about since it never happened in there game, they had a totally different situation happen.

I don't know how it could make you dizzy unless you were playing some of the space walking parts. Otherwise it's like any 3rd person shooter.

I don't think the controls were fucked up...I think there was purposefully a bit of a delay/drag to better fit the horror theme. If you could flick your gun around like Q3 I don't think it would have been as "scary" to me - I could have just run through like Rambo. Knowing my guy was a bit slower to respond caused me to change my behavior to compensate. Of course hating the scheme is legitimate, but I think it was semi or completely intentional, and not just "fucked up" due to consolitis, etc.

I couldn't continue playing Dead Space because it was just too intense for me. Yes, I am a chicken and I have bought DS2...

I dunno, it has something to do with the low FOV, the unresponsive movements or the swaying camera. I'm certainly not the only person to feel sick playing Dead Space, and since they offered no camera options at all there's no way to fix it or isolate what actually caused the problem. Not all 3rd person shooters make me nauseous, there's been a couple that have and it the first one was Dead Space. Luckily I bought the game on sale so didn't lose much, a mate of mine bought it full price and only played it for about 10 minutes before getting a migraine.

I dunno, I thought it was pretty fucked up. If they wanted to do what you're talking about they could have just implemented a maximum turn rate, the delay I just found annoying more than anything. Also you have the whole bunch of issues with vsync and controls that the game had, that's pretty "fucked up" if you ask me. You could remove most of the mouse lag by turning it off in game, and reduce it further by forcing it through the drivers though some still remained... sounds like a fuck up to me. I played for a couple of hours before googling mouse lag and finding out the problem and all of a sudden the game got a fuck load easier :p

I never had the issues with the controls and V-Sync that a lot of people had. I had no bugs or issues with either Dead Space or Dead Space 2.

I do remember that the key binds could be fucked up - to respec a gun I would have to go to the keybindings and rebind it to the original key, otherwise it wouldn't work at all. Didn't have any v-sync issues.

Yeah, the vsync issues seemed pretty widespread though maybe not everyone had it. The first time it struck me that there was something wrong was when the mouse lag changed depending on the situation, which I eventually discovered was because the vsync induced mouse lag was framerate dependant. So as the framerate changed from action sequences to quiet sequences or sequences which were graphically intensive, the magnitude of the mouse lag would vary. I think when the game was working properly there was no mouse lag in aiming, only a slight camera lag, the targeting reticle would move with the mouse, but the camera lagged slightly behind... though it's been a while since I played it so maybe I'm remembering wrongly.

Apparently all the problems were fixed in DS2, though given the nausea the first game gave me I haven't been willing to drop the money to try DS2.

DS2 definitely felt more polished. I actually only got about 75% - 80% of the way through DS1 before I lost my save files and didn't feel like playing through again. DS2 I got for free with my purchase of ME3 I think? Played straight through it in a weekend, which it had been a long time before I had done that for any game. If you can find it on sale, I definitely would recommend it. The story continued to be good in DS2.

I never experienced any of that.

Theres definitely zero comparison between this two games but as they are both controller based games on PC I'd say Dead Space since it only had shitty controls where as Mass effect seems to not work at all with my 360 controller which really pisses me off.

I really liked Dead Space as I'm a huge RE fan. My only complaint is it wheres out its welcome at the 25 hour mark or whatever chapter 10 is and you're really ready for the game to end and it does it just has an extra couple chapters that werent like padding or anything I just waned it to end sooner.

I got like 10 minutes into mass effect 1 and I had like 150 items I had no use for that someone told me I have to melt down and so bullshit with. I got annoyed and quit. I tried to restart this last week but the controller thing blocked me.

Where the hell do you get that they are both controller based games? I never played either one with a controller. I can't even imagine navigating the menus of Mass Effect 1, 2, or 3, with a fucking controller. I'd kill myself first.

They both work fine with a controller, though obviously you have to force a controller for ME games. That said... I would not play either game with one.

I'm sure they do as is the case on the console versions. But The mouse and keyboards work just as well and probably better for both. I find the notion that games like this are better with a controller to be utterly ridiculous and without basis. I feel the same about playing any 3rd person game with a controller as I do for first person games. They are slow and imprecise. Auto-aiming and ridiculous hit boxes are generally needed to deal with the crap controllers.

And functionally, a 3rd person game is no different than a 1st person shooter save for the fact that there is some character standing in your view the entire time.

I tried DS with a controller and promptly gave up. I never tried with mouse and keyboard as I had been under the impression that controller was superior. This thread will inspire me to try it again without the controller.

I thoroughly enjoyed Dead Space 2. Issac is a great character and I might even go as far to say as an overall game, Dead Space 2 is better than Mass Effect 3.

The controls were fucked up on the PC, it was and still is an issue with vsync or something. Don't remember but you need to turn it on/off to fix it. I ended up playing with a controller since it was obviously coded with that in mind. Not that its better per say, If there was multiplayer or i was playing multiplayer i wouldn't use a controller but since the main game is single player i feel no need to learn to play a game made for console and ported by using a keyboard. I also don't really care for platformers while using a keyboard, to me it just feels wrong.

Having finished both, I would choose Dead Space. Mass Effect was boring as shit. Just my opinion.

Mass Effect 3 was more fun overall. Now the ending of Mass Effect 3 kills it. No doubt. Dead Space 2 doesn't have a shitty ending.

Gabriel, Ima let you finish, but Mass Effect is one of the best games of all time. OF ALL TIME!

I totally agree. Mass Effect taken as a whole is my all time favorite game in history and I date back to the Atari 2600 in 1982! However, it aint for everybody. The general BF3 addict probably wont care for all the dialogue you have to do especially in ME1. The key is if you get emotionally invested in the characters. If you get attached to them, then the game jumps to a whole new level. As much as I loved Dead Space 1 and 2, I never felt Isaac and the rest of the cast were never more than video game characters. With the group from Mass Effect, I actually start to feel like theyre really friends of mine, as lame and pathetic as that sounds. Thats what pushed it passed Final Doom on my all time list. But if youre one of those that dont get into the characters that much, then you will not like it as much as us diehards do.

Loved both games. You can't go wrong with either but Mass Effect has more replay value. However, dead space made me almost have a heart attack. Not many games can do that.

In no particular order

controller? - both console ports more or less.

25 hours? - felt like 25 hours. As I recall there's a couple bosses fight that repeat somewhat annoyingly. I do play slow because I don't game to game exactly it's relaxation thing for me I'll never be that guy taht boasted that he beat a game in x hours on hardcore, but actually yes. I had trouble with boss fights in Dead space because the button scheme on the controller was problematic for some reason I recall the buttons weren't assignable(could be wrong) and I simply do not play 3rd person on a keyboard if I can help it. It seems like 3 times longer than any RE game. I would actually recommend it to people that feel like their moneys worth is calculated in hours.

Mass Effect blegh? - So a while back I played about 30 minutes of it, but the by end of the first mission or so none the conversational choices felt like some I would say and felt empty. I had this giant Santa claus bag full of items I had discernible use for that someone told me Im supposed micromanage melting down and crafting or some crap. It wasn't so much I poo-poo the game but that I found something far more enjoyable to play and just moved on. Pretty sure it was STALKER.

So anyway I do wanna go back and give ME another shot but my 360 controller doesn't seem to work and with all the consolish menus I really don't feel like using a keyboard. As soon as I get that sorted out I try again and hopefully not find something else I'd rather be playing.
