Dead Space controls?

So first I had insane mouse lag, and found the disable in-game v-sync and Nvidia control panel force v-sync cure, but even after that the mouse still seems to lag.

I have sensitivity buttons on my mouse, but making it faster makes my guy turn way too fast, and making it slower makes my aim control way too slow...

I tried playing on my 360 controller, but it's even worse.

Is it just my config or does this game have massive control issues? Never heard anything like this from all the people recommending this game...

The game has massively bad controls. I am shocked for all the people recommending it no one mentioned that to you. All the threads around here seem to have people mentioning it every second post or more.

I still haven't gotten very far in Dead Space for this exact reason. The controls and aim just feel way too floaty.

One day I'll manage to sit down and play through it because I know there's a great game to be experienced in there behind the shitty control scheme.

I managed to complete the game using a rumblepad but yeah controls were insanely difficult to use on PC.

You need to turn up the mouse sensitivity in game to max, then use your mouse controls on the mouse to fine tune it.

Thanks, this helped a little, but controls are still not ideal :(

I don't care how good a game is, if the controls aren't good it isn't fun. I really wish I got ME2 instead...

How did the developers ship this game out, and no one thought, wait a second... our controls suck!

When I first fired this game up it took me quite a while to get used to not only the controls but also the "over the shoulder" point of view. It did take a while but I did get used to it and glad I stuck it out cause it is just about my favorite all time game.

Keep working at it. Hopefully youll start to get the hang of it and you should be glad you did.

Forgive the overused meme, but you're doing it wrong. Every problem you mentioned with the mouse were the same problems I encountered, but using a wireless 360 controller and the wireless receiver worked perfectly.

What went wrong for you when using the 360 controller?

Hows the native controller support? I played the 360 version so I'm not aware of any bad controls with mice. Perhaps using a controller could help?

I used the wired Xbox360 controller on the PC for Dead Space and had not problems what so ever.

Never had a problem with a G9. This is why it's worth having detailed customization profiles for a gaming mouse these days, in many games I have to make keyboard and mouse profiles to make it playable.

Dead Space wasn't too much different from the rest of the crap ass controls of port jobs.

The problem I had with Dead Space was the sensitivity wasn't even for the x and y axis. The sensitivity on the y axis just seem so much lower than the x axis. I would have to move the mouse 3x more to get an equal amount distance when aiming up or down versus left to right. Game was still good though.

The FOV on the camera really drove me nuts while playing. Reminds me of the awful camera in RE4 and 5 but even a little worse. Bothered me even more than the laggy and weird acceleration on the controls.

I liked it otherwise because it reminded me an awful lot of System Shock 2.

Yeah, Dead Space has a lot of little quirks (ME2 would have been a MUCH better choice imo). None of the game breaking, but they are all annoying. The mouse lag for me was remedied by the Vsync fix, so I can't help you there. Just be thankful you didn't have a headache and felt like throwing up after about 15 minutes of playing it (like I did).

i had to use an xbox360 control myself. the limited fov is very annoying. but the limited controls heightens the tension in my opinion.

Didn't have any mouse issues with the game personally. I used a Logitech G5.

Used a mx518 here, & no problems on my end. It did take a second to get used to the controls, but they are really no different than Resident Evil.

Heh, and RE's controls were shit also :p

I'm using a G5 and still found Dead Space controls to be pretty crappy. Probably be able to adapt to them after some time. I'll give it another shot eventually

I could imagine how an FPS player who is used to dead on accuracy and tight controls would be put off by the lack responsiveness in Dead Space. It's a very, very different experience but probably adds to the suspense and urgency of the game atmosphere.

I posted having problems with Dead Space when I got it last year, and I was advised by the experts here to...either enable or disable triple buffering (I can't remember) in the Nvidia drivers. Controls became far more responsive afterwards :)

The fact that there were no patches or any other form of post-release support for a terrible game problem from Visceral at all for Dead Space doesn't give me much confidence in Dead Space 2.

Just leave V-Sync off and mouse problems disappear. Though, I played through with my 360 gamepad. It was much more enjoyable that way.

Turning off vsync ONLY fixes the mouse lag. If you walk around the first area, when you face in certain directions, if you try to spin around, the sensitivty just drops to almost nothing, and you have to track your mouse over 2-3 times just to turn around. I had to run FPS Limiter just to get the game to work but I had to sacrifice using vsync with it b/c there is still a bit of mouse lag with it on even with triple buffering.

I didn't have any problems with this game using the mouse and keyboard. Then again I don't have any bullshit software loaded for my mouse. Just the default OS drivers. I'm using a Logitech G9x which has worked flawlessly for me. Dead Space also supported Eyefinity resolutions out of the box and adjusted the FOV properly. Overall I was very happy with the overall experience. The controls are a bit clunky but the game's action is slow enough for long enough to get you used to it before hitting you harder in the later games.

Wait, there was a choice between Dead Space and ME2... and somebody convinced him to get Dead Space?

:(

Apperantly:

I really wish I got ME2 instead...

Some people do actually prefer Deadspace over ME2... I can't really fathom why though... but different tastes.

Who actually uses the mouse software? I can't remember ever even OPENING the disk that came with any of my mice for at least the last 10 years. I doubt most other people can either.

This mirrors my experience. Also v-sync adds LOTS of input lag, I disabled it and it works fine. Even the developers recommend you play with a 360 pad.

Same here but I used a wireless 360 controller (with the wireless receiver dongle of course). I think I even had Vsync enabled and I had no issues whatsoever on rig in sig and even on my old XPS laptop (Vista w/ 7950GTX/C2D). I'm not sure what the problem is, but I guarantee it's fixable and not 100% the games fault.

I played this on my pc with keyboard and mice... and i instantly fell in love with the game

With or without V-synch, the game for me was initially unplayable, especially with the gamepad. There was huge input lag. The lag was manageable after I mucked around with the Triple Buffering settings in the Nvidia drivers, but was still evident. This was the only thing that helped reduce the problem.

The developers recommended the gamepad because they have no idea how to develop for the PC. This is evident with the zero post-release support they offered for what was very much a game-breaking problem.

Dead Space is not Street Fighter, Devil May Cry, Need For Speed or another game that inheritly benefits from a gamepad more than a keyboard; any kind of 3D shooter is best with a mouse. The fact that Visceral managed to screw up this most basic and fundamental part of a shooter on the PC is absolutely unacceptable. Visceral's incompetence is what spawned the gamepad recommendation; much different than the reason Capcom gave for recommending a gamepad or fight stick when Street Fighter 4 was announced for the PC.

Dead Space and RE5 were unplayable for me with their lousy control scheme..it's like wading through quicksand with deadweights tied to your limbs. Tried with the mouse+keyboard combo as well as the xbox 360 controller...just gave up after a while...a waste of time and money.

I loved Dead Space, and had no problem with the mouse+keyboard controls. I read somewhere that the game's mouse problems were caused by your computer running the game too easily, at too high a framerate. I ran the game maxed-out at my CRT monitor's highest resolution of 2304x1440, without v-sync.

With my ancient PC, maybe that had something to do with the nice precise mouse movement?

This .. burn the heretic.

ME2 has some really great set pieces. I just started another play through and the inside of the disabeled collector ship, with all the floating hexagon platforms is very cool. ME really does scale well, heck even ME1 had the part where soverign was attached to the citadel.

Further proof that Visceral has no idea on how to develop for the PC.

This thread inspired me to go back and give Dead Space another whirl and man, I am not disappointed I did.

Disabling v-sync ingame and using nVidia control panel v-sync and triple buffering instead seems to help a lot and I'm loving the game so far. The graphics still look amazing by todays standards and the atmosphere is so eerie and creepy. The game just oozes polish. Love it!

The controls still feel a bit floaty but I'm already looking forward to Dead Space 2!

Supposedly the control scheme for the second game will be better. Not sure if that's true or not, but I remember reading that some where. I loved Dead Space. It's awesome, highly polished and yeah, it's all about atmosphere. It does the sci-fi / horror genre better than any game I've seen thus far.

Same here, been playing it for the past few days and am loving it. It reminds me kind of what it was like playing System Shock 2.
