Dead psu?

Hi,I went away for a few days and turned the computer of normaly,then removed the socket from the wall..
Got back yesterday,pluged it in and its dead!! there is a flickering green light(at the back)under the power supply cable but no other sign of power anywhere...theres also a continuous clicking noise that seems to be coming from the power supply unit.

Today i had all but the 20 pin connector attached to the M/B,i shorted the green and grnd wires and there was power-the psu fan was running-the 2 drives working-the HD spun.

Pick up another PSU and hook it up to your system. If the system boots, then the PSU is the problem. If the system doesn't boot, the mobo is the problem.

BTW what are the specs of your PC?

Before i had the problem windows was ocasionally running slow and sometimes would freeze.
 
Yeah the PSU for your PIII system probably won't be compatible. Just go out and buy another PSU to test your PC. If you have a Fry's nearby, Ultra V-Series are semi-dent budget PSUs.

And by specs I meant how much and what type of RAM you're using, what power supply do you have, motherboard, hard drive, etc. Look at my sig for an example of specs listing.
 
Sorry about the specs...I dont realy want to go spend money when im not positive of the fault..

is there any way to test the psu with a multimeter?Iv seen some sites that show a (how to)
but there for pc that are running.

Check if the P3 PSU has a P4 connector (the little 4 way one with the yellow and black cables) then check your motherboard manual for the minimum rated PSU you can use, be sure to check the ampage on the 5v rail, that's where the P3 PSU will probably fall down. Be warned though, if it doesn't work you'll probably fry the P3 psu.

It does sound like your PSU is broken though, a couple of HDs and fans won't draw nearly as much power as a P4, so it sounds like it's tripping under a higher load. Was it turned on most of the time before you went away? Occasionally things that go faulty will fail once they're left to cool down, certain UK satellite receivers in the old analogue days were prone to this, they'd be fine until turned off and left to cool, then they'd never work again. :(

thx for the reply...it does hav a 4pin connector but I dont think i want to risk frying the P3 unit.

It was running 24/7 before it took a 2 week break...and i thought i was doing it a favor.

I heard t o replace the compaq psu is very expensive.any links where i could find 1 to fit?

I'm afraid you going to have to look deeper

It might be 1 other thing:
you might not get the power good signal, then the mobo will not start

if you had a psu tester , you are sure
