DDR2 1066 Necessary?

I noticed that the E6320 has a FSB of 1066, but that memory is so damn expensive I'd much rather get DDR2 800. Will I still be able to OC over 3Ghz (assuming the chip is capable, of course) with DDR2 800? Will I see any major performance set backs running DDR2 800 rather than the double the price 1066?

EDIT: I plan to use this board to do this. How much of a higher multiplier does the E6420 have over the E6320?

E6320 7x 1.866 MHz 4MB 1.325V 266MHz
E6400 8X 2.133MHz 2MB 1.325V 266MHz
E6420 8x 2.133MHz 4MB 1.325V 266MHz

with the max cpu mulit of 7x on the 6320 you will need faster than pc6400 memory to get the most out of it, see my sig. and will be at very high FSB that stresses the board.

with the 6420 you can do 8x 400 FSB for 3.2 GHz before you even start to OC your memory.

I would go with the 6420 and good PC6400 (800MHz) memory

QFT. You can get 2gb of crucial ballistix for $115 out the door, plus get $45 back in rebates. The ballistix will do 400mhz all day long w/1.7v and they'll oc like a champ as well.

An e6420 should do 3.2ghz will only a minimal volt increase and run nice and cool even with the stock cooler.
 
Alright, I've decided to go with the E6420 and G.SKILL DDR2 800. I will most likely get an aftermarket HS/F just because I want this puppy to run as cool as possible. Any suggestions for that? I was looking at that huge Zalman, but I'm not sure if it will fit on my motherboard I've got picked out (the 120mm fan, think it's the 7700 or something).
 
Very wise, you will do well on the OC without even having to push stuff hard leaving plenty of room if you do wish to "go for it".



I water cool so dont know bumpkiss but over at anandtech.com (who seem to do things right even if they gush a bit too much about everything that is new) they like the thermalright ultra, no clue if it will fit.

several articles on ongoing cooling testing and their methods and testing platform is stable so the results between all the stuff they tested should be relevant and accurate.
 
Pretty good hsf roundup at madshrimps. Got most of the big names in there.

I've been watercooling for the last 2 years, but the last hsf I bought was the scythe ninja. Damn good cooler IMO.
 
Question! July 22 the new Q6600 comes out for $266! Would that be worth spending the extra $80 compared to the E6420 I plan to get now? Are there any plans for future games to support quad core? Will the E6420 drop in price even more when the Q6600 comes out?

Also, what about these new C2Ds with 1333 FSB? I've heard that will make them harder to OC? Truth?

A while back I read an article about how Valve would be supporting multiple core systems in the future. Supreme Commander is currently out and takes advantage of the extra cores (link).

Many future games will probably have support for them, but its hard to say just how soon.
 
Well damn, now I don't want to be stuck behind the times, lol. I think I'll just get the 6420 for now and just upgrade again next summer to Quad since they should be DIRT cheap then, along with DDR3 and 9XXX and 3XXX from nvidia and ATI respectively :D
