DCS:- Warthog (A-10C)

My flight instructor always tells me that PC sims are a waste of time because you can't "look around" and you just "look straight" the whole time. I think it's time I show him some TrackIR vids.

I'd get a TrackIR if I played more sims than FSX. Right now I'd rather spend the money on a HOTAS and just use the hat knob to pan.

However, if I get as addicted to this as I am to FSX, TrackIR might be justified.

Agreed, I just wish for me that some of the games had a simple "idiot" mode where if I wanted to just fly and shoot things i could, my brain after a days work can't handle reading a manual and doing the training exercises ( i tried with Falcon 4.0 ) however I do enjoy that they have kept this niche market alive!

Nerdgasm alert!!

Just got my TrackIR 5 setup with DCS Black Shark (as well as ArmA 2 and FSX)... WOW, this is the coolest gaming-related gizmo I have EVER used.

Bring on A10 Warthog :D

DCS:Blackshark has a pretty stripped down arcade mode that may be right up your alley. I'd guess A10 will have the same.

Woohoo, got my KA50 in the air from cold and dark for the first time :D

Feels good doesn't it?

Quite possibly the best thing I ever bought for my PC. It's up there with my old Voodoo 1 for jaw dropping awesomeness, the first time you use it.

Are you guys talking about this setup? What exactly do you do just put it on your LCD? The diagram pic is kind of small and you can't zoom in

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0029M6VKA?ie=UTF8&tag=amaznn4-20&B0029M6VKA

Yeah, that thing. :)

It's basically a tiny webcam-looking device that you just clip on top of your monitor, or similar position. You wear either a clip designed for a traditional baseball cap (or visor, etc), or you can get a clip that mounts to most headsets. The camera sees the 3 IR LEDs that are on the clips and uses them to compute 3D motion which it translates into POV movements in whatever game.

I got mine today and it took like 3 minutes to setup. Download software, install, plug TrackIR in, play games! However most people will probably want to tweak the settings a little (how sensitive each axis is, dead zones, etc)

Cool. What about an "in-between" mode ? ( Call it... Sim-Lite? )
Would be very good to have varying degrees of difficulty (realism) to work your way up to from raw rookie to super ace.

This thread now has me watching this game, too. Please keep the updates coming!:)

Yes, if you run the original SIM, you have a gameplay screen that gives a pretty good selection of check boxes that let you turn off damage, simple flight mode, no wind etc. You can still get the "sim feel" the arcade mode strips out, but not have to know what combo of switches it takes to turn on your landing lights. Or you can put in 100% real mode and watch as your rotor blade shear off when you turn right to sharply, after your 15 minute start up sequence of course.

Will this sim use all six cores of an i970? Is the program native 64-bit?

No, it'll use two cores, partly, as only some parts of the Sim engine are currently mulithreaded. And yes there are two set of binaries Native 32bit and Native 64bit.

god damnit i want this so bad, I'm just weary about making the buy because I don't know how well my machine will run it. thoughts?

1055t OC'd to 3.5ghz
8gb DDR3
5830

think it'll run smooth enough on high settings? I need them to be pretty high because I'm too picky about my sims.

Right now it's in beta so they are still fixing performance issues

X2 550
8gb DDR3
5850

I can't run it at full but it still looks darn gorgeous, heres a pic of medium settings that runs mostly smooth and this is at 3880x1600

Beta 4 is out. See here.... http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=63964

Although there are a few issues I'm not happy about in beta 4, it is now available for download. Please note that it is still a beta and NOT a release candidate.

Beta 4: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/index.php?scr=products&end_pos=135&lang=en

Two versions of the patch will be available:

- Beta 3 to Beta 4 Patch. If you have a Beta 3 already installed, you can apply this patch to it.

- Beta 4 full install. This is a full version of the beta and should NOT be installed over a previous version. (RECOMMENDED)

As in previous betas, download the setup and ALL bin files to a folder. Then run the setup file and follow instructions.

Some other notes:

1- Performance improvement for beta 4 was that all units now have Levels Of Detail (LOD). In later betas we'll optimize other areas, particularly effects and EDM models that are having a big, negative impact. However, some things will always hurt frame rate like TGP / Mav video (have to render the game a 2nd or 3rd time!) or viewing high poly objects (like A-10C, F-15, etc.) up close. No way around that.

2- We know that there are cluster bomb issues and they are still being worked on. We've had to redo much of this code to support new features like HOF and this has resulted in a buggy weapon... for now.

3- When you run the game for the first time, you will likely have a long (4-15 min) white screen while the shaders are compiling. The game has not crashed.

4- We hope to have a change log soon.

5- We hope to have a quick beta 5 available before the end of the year.

6- If you have a font problem in the GUI, disable AA in your graphics card properties.

7- Some of our testers have reported installer issues. If you encounter this, we apologize and ask that you wait for beta 5.

8- To confirm beta version, please check file dates in your A-10C dir. The GUI indication is not correct.

If you encounter a problem, please for the love of god first consult the FAQ at: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=58551

Happy Holidays,
Matt

Good to get serious flight game, but pity it's A-10. Not much chance of any good air to air combat. I hope that their another game will be about some more air superiority planes. Guess I'll have to play FLanker 2.5 for that (and yeah... give me more russian planes, with good campaign to fight for Mother Russia)

Flanker 2.5? Old school :)

Why not give Lock On Platinum a try? Done by the same Devs as Flanker and DCS.

Holy shit that looks great.

Nate, I've still got LOMAC sitting around...does it have a decent "instant action" mode with reduced difficulty? I cut my teeth on A-10 Tank Killer and the Jane's series back in the early to mid nineties and those were just about perfect as far as difficulty. I also loved the Janes instant action dogfights.

How does stereo3D work with A10? Work okay with BS hope it work even better with this :D

There are various options to reduce difficulty. It can scale difficulty down to an arcade game level IIRC. I think there are Instant action missions too. Since you already have the Original Lock On, give it a go. The Platinum version which includes the Flaming Cliffs 2 addon. is a big improvement over the original.

An interview with one of the producers ....

http://games.on.net/article/11576/Developer_Interview_DCS_A10Cs_Jim_Mackonochie

games.on.net: Any firm release dates in mind? Christmas 2010 has been and gone ;)

Jim Mackonochie: The download version will be released in late February. The boxed version will be available, dependant on territory, within 2 to 3 months later.

games.on.net: Anything else you'd like to add?

Jim Mackonochie: Coding has already started on the next aircraft in the DCS series. All I can say is that it will be a USA fixed wing aircraft!

Nate

I hope its not the F-16. Enough with the F-16 already. How about the F-14? The Tomcat hasn't gotten any love for over 15 years. Not since Fleet Defender.

Something to note though is that there seems to be issues with ATI systems....I can't seem to get the game to play over 25fps with the system in my sig on a single monitor let alone in eyefinity...would love to turn the eyecandy on but something isn't right with it yet... :(

There is something wrong there, i have a 4890 and get much more fps than you at full settings. Post your problem on the official forums and you may get a solution.
