DC Vault 2

Kenlo and Razor_FX_II are tearing Malaria control up. Good job guys.

Thinking about a Cosmology push, anyone interested?

Not until the X-mas race is up. We only got a partial month of Cosmology in before WCG kicked the new Cancer Project. We are still up in the air about January's push too. So, discussion is still on the table. :)

I'd be okay with a Cosmology push in the near future - it's one of those projects I haven't run in quite a while, and wouldn't mind getting it up to a 250K or 500K milestone!

theskynetPOGS has been added to the Vault. We are currently in 62nd place at that project.

Excellent. I really like their overhauled appearance too. I'm voting for cosmology because I think we can really move up the ladder, at least a place or two. Maybe. Anyone want an asus single slot 650?

Is that the same version I had trouble with? If nobody claims it, just throw it in the box and I will find a happy home for it somewhere. I am about to do some more borg donating and if this one works ok, I may swap out an 8400 or 210 with it. Since I'm about to get a few more rigs myself, I should have more capable setups that could handle some higher end cards.

It is! But instead this one works! Was last seen crunching Einstein! I'll give it till Wednesday, then its yours

If I remember correctly, that fan on it was bulky enough that it still required three slots or else the air flow was completely blocked. For a "single" slot card, it was a bad design. I would not recommend putting in a rig with a used slot close by.

True, the fan was at 100% most of the time. And seriously throttled if anything was next to it. But it doesn't need any other powder connectors though!!!!

Well, my daughter's rig I built only has a single 9800gtx running in a mid tower with plenty of room... If you don't have another taker, I could get it up and running! And since its in the family room, 100% fan doesn't bug me. Might mean a new PSU though...

The 650 only uses slot power only, so you should be more than fine with it. If Gil's okay with it, it's yours!

I'm fine with it. It all goes to our team anyways. I was just mentioning it because I always have a home for newer cards. I'm still sitting mostly in the old days as far as what I have here.

Though it uses the PCIe slots power, it still draws up to that amount. It just doesn't need additional power cables from the power supply. That is awesome for lower quality boards and/or power supplies. However, you need to account for the extra draw and need to keep it in mind when adding it to the tower. I was just pointing out the numbers so that you don't accidentally fry anything.

I am getting ready to replace a few older models that just sit here eating electricity. I'm hoping a few new additions to my home will give more results for hopefully the same power draw.

I didn't realize that the TDP was so low - I had it confused with the 660, which is a TDP of 140W... It's only a 500W PSU, so I had figured the additional 140W would put me well over 400W/80% - especially as that q9550 is running a bit over stock so I'm sure it's pulling more than 95W BOINCing 24/7... But at only 64W, it should be no problem. Of course, if Gil wants to change out one of his, and send that my way, I'm good with that too - I just figured that a 24/7 DC box with an open slot is a box with a wasted slot! :D

And believe me, I get the power draw issue - my wife just noticed our power bill, and finally realized that the reason it's almost 40% higher than this time last year is the two extra DC computers running full time! Just had to turn down an i7-950 that I had hoped to make box #4... Until I get my solar panels next summer!

I'll let you guys fight it out in the arena... :D But seriously, that's a good point Gil, and there is always the possibility of it trying to draw more than is spec for the pcie slot, though hopefully it doesn't. Asus at least has good component selection. If anything.

That's the toughest part, explaining to the wife or significant other why the higher power bill/ more noise/ more heat is worth it. My wife hates it!!!!

Just an FYI for anyone looking to crunch using their Intel HD4000 and above; the Einstein app is having difficulty, though Collatz works like a champ. Einstein will download the right application, but it'll sit at 0% with no gpu usage. :(

I PM'd Jathanis with some info.

Yeah...my wife hasn't pushed the power issue yet. We moved from a 2 bedroom to a 6 bedroom and our electric is about the same, so the house is much more efficiently insulated. This has allowed for a few upgrades. Plus I can just tell her cost of electricity has gone up. She doesn't look at the bills that closely. However, I'm just worried about straining the house too much. So, I have to cycle stuff out to add the new goodies. Hopefully within the next year or two I can do some electric upgrades to support the addiction. :)

So far, I have seen these suggested:
SIMAP - 1
Malariacontrol - 1
ClimatePrediction - 1
Cosmology - 3

And I am up for any of those. We were doing Cosmology for November, but it was interrupted by the release of WCG;s MCM subproject. ;)

On a side note, Correlizer will more that likely be pulled from the Vault. There is a vote going on here: http://www.team-ninja.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=54274

That was quick. Correlizer is already pulled from the Vault. Its removal made us drop/raise one position in the Bio/Medical category. On the front page it shows us going down, but the forums say we moved up one spot. Something is screwy, so we'll see where we are once things are straitened out.

http://www.team-ninja.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=54288

If we are looking to advance our position within the Vault, we should also consider a push on theskynetPOGS. I believe it is worth ~30 points a position right now and it supports both x86/x64 and ARM processors

Just looked it up and it says it is compatible with Linux.

Yes in regards to POGS. I assume the Nereus app from their main page would work too if you have Java installed. However, the Nereus app doesn't count towards the Vault yet.

Here?

Looks like you're right, ze link above mentions java and details the ease of installation. Not too shabby. Linux is always a good route to go for CPU projects. Not sure on the state of AMD Linux drivers for their GPU's though.

You also don't have to install their client. You can launch it from your browser as well. (I have not tried this in Linux yet) That is what I do from work. Each instance you launch only utilizes one core/thread and can use up to ~500MB of ram. The client also by default only runs one, but you can modify it apparently to run more. They have it set this way so that it is not obtrusive to users. They take the approach that if the user wants to maximize their output, then that should be something they voluntarily/actively do.

I'm throwing down some points in Cosmology now. Jump in the water is warm!

Crunch on!

I already have some over there as well as POGS and WCG. WCG still has a day left on the X-mas challenge and I still have to hit my 5 year run time goal on MCM. January I will be probably split between Cosmology and WCG for CPU's. GPU's are pretty much everywhere. :D

Also, if anyone does decide to hop on to Cosmology, don't be surprised to see a large number of Download failed work units. It has been going on for at least 4 years now with little being done about it. If you have tiered internet, you may want to factor that into the cost of running this project. :)

Good job on the pushes guys. We have jumped a few spots in Cosmology already and have great momentum to jump several more. DooKey and Kai are tearing it up right now. Proud of you guys. We are also doing good at POGS, but with it being a new project and being recently added to the Vault, there is a lot of competition there right now. That one will be a challenge for a while. :)

I'm throwing what I have at POGS right now, seems to be quite light on RAM usage and it suits my Android device too.

Edit: is there anywhere a 5850 would be of most use to our Vault standing right now? I'm crunching some Collatz on it at the minute because I know the units complete quite quickly and I've run it in the past, but if there's somewhere it could be of more use I'll put it to work there.

Milkway might be the best project if it has good DP. (It does, yeah?). Other then that, Einsteim would be good, though they've bundled a lot into their GPU workunits, so expect long runtimes no matter what GPU you use.

Rigs are now all pointed to Cosmology with the GPU's pointed at Einstein. This should be a fun run this month. Even though it's early yet, for February, I vote POGS. We can likely come from behind and gain a few spots.

When it comes to slower/older cards, I typicaly just attach them to all projects they can handle and let the client decide. Unless of course I have a goal to achieve, but I have hit all of those already. As far as the Vault goes, I would say just pick a fave. POEM will hopefully be back up in January. If you are into badges at all, PrimeGrid and Collatz have them and Milkyway will have them soon.

Pretty sure the 5 series have good DP, yes, so I'll perhaps hit up Milkyway and the others and see how it performs.
Running into an issue with Collatz where it wants to hog a CPU core to feed the card, I thought I had it nailed down with a few tweaks but it seems to have run fine for the rest of the unit, then gone back to the way it was. Without suspending CPU tasks, the card's only hitting around 50% usage but bouncing up and down, whereas if I suspend the CPU it'll hit 95% and stay there. I think I'll point it at another project for now until I can nail that problem down.

Well...many DC'ers in general have found that leaving a full core/thread free improves throughput at most projects. I haven't done any real experiments with it, but it seems to be the popular idea. The problem you run into is that if your cores are busy with CPU, then the GPU has to wait for it to free up even if it is just a small amount of time. By having the core free, it has immediate access to the CPU as needed. The GPU is fast enough that it will output more work by having that free CPU than if you put the unused run time to work.

It just seems odd that it'll run some of the time using almost no CPU, then suddenly decide it wants a full core. Right now the GPU is at 97% load and the CPU is fully occupied with POGS, no problem. I did make a few tweaks so I'm keeping an eye on it. I know I used to run Collatz a year or two ago on a Celeron dual core, and had no problems with CPU usage - it'd crunch all day using both cores for CPU work and the GPU for Collatz. I'm going to keep playing with it, I understand leaving a full core free would guarantee no GPU performance issues but if it can work without needing a core, that's 1/3 more CPU work that can be done with this box.

Edit: Ah, I see the issue now...it seems that tasks running Collatz 2.09 run fine, GPU usage near 100%, no interference with the CPU tasks. The tasks running under Collatz 4.07 don't like not having a free thread, and drop the GPU usage to around 50% when they don't have one.

Yes, it all comes down to the app. Also, not a 100% of the job will run on GPU, so when it gets to a CPU portion, it will wait until it gets it. So, in this case, you may want to run an app_config to limit your system to only running the 2.09 work units if that is what you want to do. Otherwise, you may setup a cc_config or app_config or both to run maybe two 4.07 at a time?... Play around and see what produces the best results for you.

Sounds like a plan, tomorrow I'll have a play with my config files to only get 2.09 units.
I also finally got around to installing Virtualbox and have 5 XP VMs running DIMES on my main rig :)
