DC Vault 2

I'm pretty sure I'd done some Asteroids work on the laptop before, it had definitely done 3 or 4 by the time I noticed it was giving crazy estimates. Still not sure why it refused to grab work overnight or why it started getting it again, temporary glitch I guess.

Another project to consider that we could probably get a strong push in at is Cosmology. Just a thought.

Also, since it donned on me that I have kind of derailed this thread from Vault related to all things BOINC, I have opened a new thread for general BOINC discussion so that this thread can be left to just Vault topics. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1783464

At our current production at DIMES, we should be passing Team Ninja by the end of the week.

Well, for what it's worth, as we are up to 1323 post, we could also close this out and open a new DC Vault 3 thread...

So I know POEM is hit and miss, but I seemed to only get GPU WUs for about 24 hours of the 72 I was gone. Was that everyone else's experience this weekend?

POEM is notorious for running out of GPU tasks. They just don't have the equipment to support the demand. Or at least that was the case when I was following them closer. I honestly didn't keep a close eye on it since I still had SETI BETA and a couple GPUGrid work units in que. I will try and keep an eye out going forward.

There is still chatter about adding theskynet to the Vault. theskynetpogs is the BOINC side which is merged with the main site for stats, but still has its own BOINC page as well. I personally think they should just go with one page and end a lot of the confusion. They also still have the irritation of two different teams depending on which you are in. I'm not about to try and figure out that mess right now. However, here is a video on the science they do. http://vimeo.com/74438143 The BOINC page is here: http://pogs.theskynet.org/pogs/ and the main site is here: http://www.theskynet.org/ I haven't ran the other client they have available yet. If it is of interest, I could try and make a guide for it.

You can get help with running their client by reading their faq here: http://www.theskynet.org/pages/member faq?locale=en It isn't real in depth but does answer some good questions. Again, this is their JAVA app FAQ not the pogs BOINC app.

I posted this info in the Vault thread just in case we wanted to do a preemptive push to start it strong if it does get added. I will leave it up to everyone else because at some point I will be hitting it either way.

Since I had to remove BOINC from my work PC due to 3rd party auditing coming in, I decided to go ahead and give theSkyNet flash client from the web a shot. This is the nereus app and not the pogs research. So far it runs pretty smooth. Each instance uses only one core and will ramp up to ~500MB of Ram usage. The points get tallied separately on your dashboard so you can see progress from each project. However, they are supposedly merging the points together. They have another service based app you can install in the background if you want it to start when Windows starts and you don't see any icons except the shortcut that is created on the desktop. I haven't figured out any setting in that client yet or if there are anything to change. It seems to run OK though. I did a single install of that service in a VM but have shut it down for now. If this project is added to the Vault, I may make a guide for it. Otherwise, I will hold off until someone asks or I get bored. :)

Our progress in DIMES pushed us past Ars Technica in the Vault Miscellaneous section. We are now 5th place in that section.

So I got my 3rd quad up and running in my farm - boosted my Asteroids@home daily total for today over 40K points! Hopefully I can keep up that rate for a while... It looks like we're just holding even with our current push, with a few teams 50-60 days out, and a few teams 60+ days to overtaking us... Maybe we keep going through November to pick up a few more places? I know I'll probably jump back on WCG for the Christmas challenge, assuming our regular suspects set us up in it...

I plan on switching to Cosmology next month unless WCG gets their Cancer project going. Then I'm full bore on it until 5 years run time is reached. However, that does not mean the team can't continue the Asteroids push. I will no doubt still have a few devices attached due to the low system demands of the project.

Just curious but why is [H]ardOCP so far down the list in Rosetta@Home. ?

This is a great question..... :D

But seriously, it is probably because there are several Protein related projects and Rosetta is merely refining the software that others use for their Protein research. I believe WCG's HPF2 project used an older version of the Rosetta software. The amount of points awarded probably is a factor as well. I think our team is more focused on FAH as far as protein research goes.

Edit: Aaaaaaand everytime I asked about the larger projects and our positioning, the response has been that the team typically focuses on the projects that advances our position over all the most.

I see figured it might be something like that. Roseta does happen to be my prefered Boinc project. The University of Washington Medical center has preformed a couple of very rare surgical prociedueres on my wife in he battle against Lung cancer. So when I run boinc I usally run some Roseta.

We did a push I believe back in June. Can't say it was a very big one. We seemed to have lost the two new members that were pushing Rosetta the same month we did the push. (Xeno and ZeeStorm) Hopefully, they come back...

Edit: And next month I will be supporting Cosmology which is located an hour from me. That University also treated my dog for cancer. I have nothing bad to say about their veterinary school. I was shocked at the quality of the staff.

Hey Grandpa, I think I'm going to start an early push with all I've got for Rosetta. I really like what they do and how dedicated their small group has been to their project. That and I just found out a cousin of mine has throat cancer, so it'll be a fitting tribute to the old Marine.

They are currently voting on whether to add just the BOINC part of theskynet (pogs). Too bad I can't create an account. Has anyone else had a problem with account creations?

Here is the discussion and poll. http://www.team-ninja.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=50874&page=3

I for one would prefer that they add the entire project. I think they are just looking at Pogs for simplicity reasons.

Yeah... www.theskynet.org handles both the BOINC side and the nereus app they have. If you don't plan on running the java based app, just go through their BOINC page.

I finally got my DC-Vault log in set up. Woohoo! Nothing like months of trying and waiting...

Well, since WCG BETA's are just now starting for the new project, I think it is safe to say it will be a few weeks or more before the new project officially launches. I am going to continue with my plans of running Cosmology this month with plans of joining the WCG Christmas Challenge we do every year in December. Since WCG does not have a GPU project, people should consider options for December. I think I'm going to try and finish my goal for SETI BETA with the GPU's during November.

And you know, it's not necessarily BOINC, but I know the big push to finally overtake Default in F@H is on full speed by the [H]orde... Once I hit 5M in a day or two on DistrRTgen, I was thinking about joining in the fun just to say I was there... Hell, I was there for the first 5B points before having to drop out (still have the 2B, 3B, and 4B team certificates on photobucket), so what's one more milestone for a month or so? :D

I don't have anything worth folding on right now, so I'll stick to BOINC I think.
Asteroids seems to have run out of work so I'll head over to Cosmology and stick my tablet on theskynet, see how it goes. My Atom was pulling just over 500 RAC at Asteroids which is pretty decent for what it is.

Add in DIMES and Majestic12 if you have unlimited bandwidth

I already do DIMES on everything I can :)
I do have unlimited data, but MJ-12 also uses CPU cycles, so I've been staying away from that for now.

Asteroids just downloaded some work on a netbook I'm working on (and borging). I'm guessing it just ran a little dry for a bit.

I was going by their server status which right now says 1 task ready to send. Earlier it said 20, but everything I have crunching at home had cleared its cache of units and ran completely dry, none were downloading anything new from Asteroids.

I have opened a new thread over in the DC-Vault forums in regards to some of the issues I have with it. I encourage others to head over and add their $.02 even if it disagrees with my own. I can't help but feel that there is very low feedback in regards to the Vault and decisions are being made by only a hand full. Rusty has pointed out that he relies pretty heavy on the users there for the information he gets on other projects. So, any support you can give would be beneficial to all.

I know this is a double post, but it may effect our Vault status in the future.
theSkyNet is planning on giving everyone the option of merging the two teams now. Since phoenicis hasn't joined the POGS project, he may fall into limbo if we merge the two teams into one. If someone could contact him, that would be appreciated.
http://forums.theskynet.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2778
There is still discussion on adding this project to the Vault and I think this merge option may fix some of the concerns.

Since most of us will probably be doing the WCG X-mas race throughout December, we should start considering projects for January. I know a lot can change between now and then, but it is good to have something in mind. Anyone have any ideas or preference?

theSkyNet has finally merged the teams/alliances. Those who did not join the POGS team basically got dropped as if they left the team when the two teams got merged. phoenicis and token5gtd are the only two that have been dropped. They aren't currently active at that project, so if they joined the BOINC POGS project and added the team there, they should be reinstated. I honestly don't know if it gives them the option to just rejoin from the Source Finder side. I mention this in this forum posting because there is still a poll going on at the DC-Vault on whether to add POGS. I think Rusty was waiting to see if they got the teams/alliances merged first. Since SourceFinder isn't a BOINC project, it seemed more fitting here.

Added a yes vote and my $0.02 over on the Team Ninja forums for DistrRTgen...

Without looking at what the teams ahead of us are doing, under Bio/Med, SIMAP looks like a place we could gain some good places, we're currently 58th on the Vault in that one. Malariacontrol.net is another one, we're 48th in that one, but I've never ran it, and know nothing about it... Under Physical Sciences, we're out of the top 100 on the Vault in Climate Prediction. Getting us in the top 20 on all 3 of those would gain us about 750 Vault points... Those look like the biggest amounts of points to pick up.

I'm up for any of those. We did a SIMAP one a few months back and I can't remember if we did one for Climate Prediction or if that was just me doing one of my goals. Malaria Control hasn't had much of my time yet, so that might be the better choice from my standpoint. I will also say that a few weeks back that Climate Prediction was still getting errors on some work units that they are aware of but don't seem to feel is all that important to fix. I don't think they are realizing the tech support that comes with seeing Windows errors popping up on machines that are use by multiple people who aren't crunchers. Last night I couldn't even pull up their home page. They certainly aren't as good as they were with their previous team. SIMAP will periodically run out of work which is what happened during the last push. So, we may want a backup project if we go with them again.
