Anyway to rollout a DC program to about 500-600 2.8Ghz PC's from a central server? It's a 2003/AD system, with a pesky CSA box. I want a discrete rollout, just as an experiment :)

I have full access to the system, but not sure how to roll software out.

Somebody here has a thread on this ....it was a while ago....im sure someone will chime in here!
How cool is that though....your own treahertz farm!!!!!
Welcome to the fold!! :D

One of the network installers makes a MAC listing off all the boxes it;s can find, you can remove the MAC's/by name I think of any you did not want folding.

For the love of god, triple check the team listed in the config.....33 would be the right one, marty9876 is the correct name.

Oh yes....make sure on the team #..... and pity the poor pointless Marty! :p J/K
His numbers have been a a little off lately!

Thanks xENo!!!

The "search this forum" tool should do the trick.

You have full access? But are you allowed to add software? Be sure you are allowed to before you do it.

... that rollout and ALL "other people's boxes"
remember to not get funky with the extra tags. -advmethods, "big packets" and running more than one copy on HT machines are all NOT recommended. FAH is WONDERFUL at not using cycles that other programs need but it still uses ram.. and big packets gives it a very big appetite. Running one "normal" copy on a machine means that nobody will notice. like nobody. :D

just make sure to add them all to the "D to 500 boxen" thread so we can get a new one (D to 1000 boxen) started ASAP.

that'd be a lot of PPD... if i'm thinking properly, then it'd be around 50kppd or something ungodly like that...

get borging!

Bucky has always wanted everybody to 'flash' him ........ what can I say, we are a diverse bunch!!

You could probably do it very easy.

I would first set up shared user directory containing all of the cores, the console, and a config file.

Then, use logon scripts to copy the data to each machine and then make a little batch file to install the console as a service.

while im partial to female flashings.......there is nothing better than a fellow folder flashing another to get him motivated to fold faster

oh ya and im coming for you GwilyaGwees you have 79 days till you get motivated by my less than appealing flash :D

Above all make sure you have full permission first. Stanford looks down sharply on folders that "borg without permission".
That said
GAWD that's some power!!
Are those 500 to 600 PC's your discrete rollout? Or the total at the end?
What's your folding handle?
I'd recommend 10 systems for a start, I've had up to 40 running and often would find some glitches even though all the hardware was supposed to be the same.

Bring it, don't sing it. I will be getting my 13.4 Ghz out of storage within the week and then we'll see there dude!! Those above me better watch out. I'm gonna overtake youse all.

Ciao for now .....

Pretty much what he said. I am currently using a batch file as a login script that creates a folder and then copies the cores, client, and config file (be sure to setup the client file so that it works) and a registry key that is copied to program files and executed using reg.exe (the command line editor) then it is deleted. This is pretty basic.

What I did to get the reg file was run the client using -configonly and installing it as a service. Then open regedit and go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FAH@C:+Program Files+Folding@Home+FAH502-Console.exe] then editing the ImagePath to add -forceasm (because these are shut of with a power switch not shutdown) then exporting to the location of my shared directory.

Make sure you have permission. You don't want to lose your job (and we don't want you to lose it either) :)

I can paste the batch if you need me to. As I said its pretty basic. Oh I also have a batch file to remove the client, its a little diffrent and it took a while to get the bugs worked out but it copies a reg file with [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FAH@C:+Program Files+Folding@Home+FAH502-Console.exe] to remove the service, and then it deletes the contents of the work dir and folding dir then it deletes the folders.

Pretty simple eh ;)

Please do Logikality, that would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

For those that wonder, i'm the network admin, so the network is mine.

My F@H name is Zylo3k and my UD name is Zylo

Is your name active for F@H?
dunno.. i'm a n00b at this :(

I just installed the F@H app, and added the team number and my name (Zylo3k) to the config.

Well I guess you haven't turned in a completed wu yet then. Once you do you will show up. Thought you had been doing this for a little while.

Ok, I tried the rollout program (all PC's are Win2000, not XP) and it didn't work. So I made a new share, //***/fah

and put fah.exe from the original website (console only)

then on 10 machines I typed in //***/fah/fah.exe and it seemed to work, but it crashed and mentioned a file I/O error and Work does not match original.

Any ideas on what I screwed up?

Can the machines all work together on a single work unit to get it done faster, or do they all run independent??

Thanks!

I hope to get at least 60 machines up and running in the next hour :(

This is the only thing i can help with. They all will run independany units. Sorry never had that many machines so I cant really help with the rollout. But I will buckle down since you will be blowing past me soon with that size borg. Luck.

how long does it take to complete a WU on a 2.8Ghz machine? I have 12 machines running @ the moment, and one seems to have frozen at "writing checkpoint files" should I install the regular client instead of this console one?

It has 5000 steps of 500000 completed (1)

all the rest are at zero (been running for 5 minutes)

It all depends on the wu. I have a 2.8 that I run 24/7......if you can give me a project number that looks like pXXXXXXX i can see what i can compare it to that my machine has run and let you know.

Use the console it is more efficent as for the ones that are stuck. Give it a few minutes, the only time I had a borg stick like that I just rebooted and it worked fine.......so you might try that as well.

What kind of error are you getting? I didn't include the client, the config file, or the cores so that may be where it is breaking down.

It uses the console client I downloaded from stanford http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/release/FAH502-Console.exe it renames the client to fah-console.exe so that you don't have to change the services reg key when you update the program.

edit I have been toying around with a script that installs the service to a folder created on a server, ie server\share\fah\computer\fah502-console.exe I will work on that and post my results.

edit2 a google search found http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=231247 that looks like a good way to go. Wish I had an easy answer that didn't include linking to someone elses forum.

edit3 found a machine that has 2000 on it to test. I got up to the point where the registry key is installed you need to rem out reg import and remove the rem from regedit /s that got it to work for me.

you need to copy the folder to somewhere local. make sure there are no files other than a config file and the executable (cores as well... that would actually save you some bandwidth to have all the FAH cores copy over with the executable and the config file)

then go to that local folder and execute it. you may want to do "fah.exe -configonly" to install it as a service. i have tried using a reg key to install it as a service, but it doesn't seem to work. i'm probably missing something obvious though.

good luck!

I know how its done... and I will even tell you if half of your borgs will fold for Team 32.

27 computers are now folding for team 33, along with my A64 4000+ at home. It's taking a long time even for my A64 to complete a WU! Didn't realize each unit was so complex.

Only 2 have finished a WU, the rest should follow up real soon.

Well if that 4000+ is to slow you can send it to me :D

But seriously the better the system the bigger the wu they get.

Wave as you pass by!
