I'm sick of seeing "Q2 2005" in release dates for the new Intel chipsets. Does anyone know when the motherboards with the 955P are coming out? I have been waiting and waiting so that I will be a bit more future proof with the 955. I'm waiting for those before I upgrade my aging P3 1.3Ghz... But the wait is becoming harder every day with all of the multimedia work I am doing (and losing valuable time on with this PC).

I'm almost tempted to jump the gun and get the 925XE, but it's the end of the line in terms of Intel's future, and I'm the type of person who doesn't do drastic hardware changes until at least a couple years have passed. I always get the most of my PC, which is why I'm playing the waiting game. But I would at least like to have a date to look forward to...

PS Mods feel free to move this to the motherboard thread if it's more appropriate there...
 
Wel, the nForce4 is pretty future proof, since it too will support dual core. There are plenty of those around.
 
I knew an AMD advocate would jump in here :p
I do a lot a LOT of multimedia work. Hyperthreading is important, P4's additional multimedia prowess is important. The stability of the Intel chipset is important. I would've already purchased an AMD long ago if I wanted to go that route, but this time I'm going P4.

Q2... damn paper launches.

Doesn't the nForce4 for Intel work with dual core? I was of course talking about AMD, but still. Multitasking wont be an Intel vs AMD issue when dual core comes out.
 
No dual-core chipsets for Intel are currently out. While you may be right about the multitasking part, P4's are still better with multimedia. Which is why I'm looking for them.

Thanks though. Anyone have some solid dates? I'm losing hours of work and patience here.
 
Does anyone know if these new Intel dual-core supporting chipsets (i955X) will also support Presler, not just Smithfield? I think Intel would be making a seriously bad move if they did not...
 
I would THINK so, b/c all they're doing is moving the chips from one die, to 2 single dies connected on the package (basically)... and I THOUGHT the package was supposed to remain 775 pin.

If so you shouldn't have to worry.

I'm looking forward to upgrading now, either to a 955 mobo or Nforce4 SLI. Get a 630 for now.... and when dual cores come down in price get one then. (and OC it of couse!) dual 4Ghz HT cores!! yummy!

The rumor has it that these and others will get a yet another new Socket called Socket 771-->Yonah and etc. Built-in Obsolescence, and tricking folks seems to be the order of the day. I thought Paul Otellini (if he were calling the shots already) would continue doing what Intel did when they launched the 800FSB processors and kept prices down. What they’re doing now is almost clownish and if it weren’t so serious, it would seem like a bad joke! Hell, they don’t need any AMD !!!!!! Zealots to trash them. They’re doing a great job shooting themselves in the foot.

P4 XE or the EE should be Killed/Canned, Dumped and the person responsible for the 3.73GHz (and its Price) and disabling Hyperthreading on the PD-840, then selling it for $350 should be FIRED! No, it’s not a $500 feature as was said on the other thread.

I’ve read this forum for about 5 years and didn’t post here because it’s useless trying to talk to the many Hardcore AMD fans that dominate the Forum. I use to think, why bother?

Expect 955P, 955G and 955X chipsets either this month, the middle of May, or early June. I hope they come this month so I can get a 955X for my bday, hehe.

370 -> 423 -> 478 -> 775 -> 771 ? - WTF!?!
 
Yeah that does make sense. Isn't Intel sticking with the 775 for a long time, now?

Haha, well, there was the A64's 754 -> 940 -> 939.. but 1207 will replace 939.

Are all 775 pins utilized on Intel chips? I know not all 939 pins are on the A64...

when will these be out? will all of the newest AMD's be compatible with todays Skt 939 mobos until 1027 comes out? im planning on buying a Sk939 nForce4 right and im wondering how long it will last.

It's called M2. It will be released sometime in 2006 and will use DDR2 and a little later in it's lifetime, DDR3.

I have no idea how long that 939 will last. If they don't do something about the garbage timings on DDR2, then 939 could last a good while longer after M2 launches.

Moot point there buddy! Socket 462 for 400 FSB that made all the other 1600 and 2100 and 2700 chipsets obsolete, big deal! It's not just socket, but chipset compatability as well. Who wanted a KT-133 when DDR lauched? Better yet, who in the hell wanted to stick with VIA after nVidia launched, then 754, 940, 939, nF-150, the 250, now 4. Folks in this market always upgrade motherboards and processors, sheesh! In the last 5 years, Intel and AMD have made a mess of things.

Sock 771 is for mobile chips, the next Single and Dual Core is based on Yonah (mobile) and 65nm. Sort of Dothan on Steroids. Cedar Mills and etc..

the ntel nf4 is spost to support dualcore intel chips too so i'd go with that, it beats current intel chipsets anyway and to guy panicing over m2, i was too but then its like oh ddr2? snore who cares

-1 pin was to differentiate their server and desktop market. Technically the 940 was a server chip/socket....

so it was more like 462 --> 754 --> 939

(940 was on a different chart - servers / ECC memory only)

Notice I didnt include the Xeon chip/socket either.
 
So Yonah will be going to a mobile (771) socket?? Why would they be pushing 775 so much, then!

Yes, but I'm banking on DDR2 being half way decent by then, and I'd rather do DDR3.

Yes, but bear in mind the FX's debuted on the 940, and those are desktop gaming chips.

FX's and EE's are both gaming / professional workstation niche' chips

Alright, I'm not going to argue with you anymore. The 940 came before the 939 and there's no two ways about it. Yes it's a server part now, but 939 seems to have been a, not quite last minute decision, but it came out quite a while after 940.


Oh and, how is the FX a workstation chip? The Opteron 150 was the same exact thing.

um, socket 940 has always been a server/workstation socket. the FX-51/53 were only on there because adding dual channel was all AMD could really do to inprove the athlon64 enough to justify a $800 pricetag. one of the main reason people avoided the fx's, was the expensive registered memory, which is required by s940, and [basically] only used in servers. socket 940 has never been for desktop use, and never will be.

anyway, back on topic,
i945/955/P4 840XE dual core were scheduled to launch in early-mid may, then AMD's dual core opteron launch date was announced as april 21st, so intel moved their launch to mid-april (probably a few days before april 21st, or, in other words, less than a week).

DIgit times is reporting that Intel is lying and folks (mobo builders) there are testing them on all types of Intel chipset boards. That was on the web but I don't have the link.

Intel has always tried to move folks away from *Forward Compatibility. Backward Compatibility is easy, faster FSB easily kills old boards with newer Processors with different (normally faster) FSB speeds. Now, there’s whole different story when the speeds stay the same. Intel has been caught lying several times. Examples;
Lie#1.
440 BX is not compatible with 133FSB.
Truth #1
I still have an Asus P3B-F that’s not only compatible with 133MHz FSB, but PC-133 RAM as well.

Move to recent times.

I875 only supports 533 and 800MHz FSB Pentium 4’s.

I’ve tested at least 5 different Willies and Northwoods on 4 different i875s, even the very Picky Aopen worked with all of them. LOL, the POS Aopen AX4C Max actually prefers non-800MHz FSB processors.

I have a lot of friends waiting on ICH-7, SLI, improved SATA, other features i955 and the new sweet nForce 4 IE have, that others don’t. That’s why 915 and 925 sales didn’t take off like i875 did. Here.

Sentinial, Kunaak, ford250 and others there are using non compat hardware LOL! Will I try it? No!

the truth will hurt you. its called support. intel doesn't like forward compatability because of support. or simply, they wont support that usage. there are lots of things you dont know, and lots of things companies dont want you to know.

Abit or Asus can probably throw a new BIOS in or make a revision to the motherboard and support the Pentium D in 915/925.

Hell look at Asus's Pentium M adapter, etc..

Or the mobo's with 875 chipset and 775 pin socket. They say they don't support 1066 FSB cpu's but they do. So I'm with you on don't always believe what Intel says.

Sure Intel wants to sell you a New Chipset when they can. I've had my unmoded IC7-G Max do right at 1100, or are doing 1200+. There was NO reason for Intel withhold ICH6 from it as well. Now ICH7 has an improved memory controller, I'd like to see what it could do with DDR1 just for a Geek's interest.

ICH6, ICH7, etc are the southbridge chips.... (no memory controller)

the northbridge 875/915/925/945/955 have the memory controllers in them.

Though the newer southbridges may have better buses/control for the harddrives, PCIe device, etc.... (access to the Northbridge/memory)

My bad! I955X has an improved memory controller, ICH7 has improved I/O bandwidth and buffers. The point was there's no danged way I'd want Dual Core on my old ICH5 and i875 North Bridge=P

PCI-E couldn't work on the limited I/O bandwidth of ICH5, no matter what North Bridge was there. It's link from the Southie would choke the hell out of it. See, my line about ICH7 on i875, no such problem.

i875 wouldn't need to have Gigabit Lan next to the AGP and above the South Bridge if it had ICH6 or ICH7.

Yeah, the 875 had the CSA gigabyte LAN directly linked to the Northbridge.

In the past south bridges are usually pin compatible. So multiple different southbridges & northbridges can be interchanged.

So whats the deal with ICH5/R vs. ICH6 vs ICH7 ? total pin count change? bus speed changes? etc? I haven't seen anything on the details of it.... or maybe I just didnt' notice b/c I was too busy looking at the benchmarks!

Each one has either Faster Wider BUS speeds, improved Buffers and or More Features. i875 should have gotten at least ICH6. ICH6 moved to 2GB of bandwidth so Intel didn't need CSA for GbE anymore. ICH7 is the same bandwidth but is supposed to add SATA-II and have similar features to the Newer C19/MCP-04 from nVidia, they swapped a lot more than just SLI. Both *North Bridges are said to be copies of each other. Who knows who got what or how but i955 will prove to be much a nicer gain over i925XE when all is said and done.

The improved South Bridge will be on all nVidia boards and this can be seen in the difference between that latest AMD nForce4 boards and nForce3 I/O wise.

I would look to find nForce4 SLI boards for Intel out by the end of this month. More specifically the Epox, as they have been all over the place in terms of displays and behind-closed-door demos of the nForce4 architecture for Intel CPUs. I won't speak to the availability of the boards as we all know what is the latest trend with launches (paper?!?)

The 955/945 chipsets are a stop gap solution for Intel. Expect to see new chipsets/sockets (771) with the release of the true dual core chips from them. I like to look at the Pentium D as Intel releasing Pentium4's that are SMP compatible...except no dual socket board...we'll just squeeze them onto one chip...not really dual core.

IMHO, we'll see at least Asus, MSI, EPOX, ABit and AOpen nForce4 or i855 or both by Friday next week. The rest by the end of the month. They will start showing up this Weekend BTW!

The board I've been seeing the most news on is the MSI board. There's screen shot of it running an Intel 830/3GHz Dual Core so that's not a problem either.

Of course Intel's dual core is just two Presscotts, AMD's dual Core is just two Athlon64s, so? Are we supposed to believe AMD did something different other than linking two A64's on the same package? Too much AMD Fan hype is muddying the information pool.

The Inquirer posted the rumor that mobo makers say Intel is lying about Dual Core not working on i925 and 915. Intel lying, wow, they were surprised?

Give me a little time to dig up the tech info, but there are some key differences in how intel's Pentium D's differ from both AMD's Dual Core offering and Intel's second step into dual core (S771). There has been some information posted about this in a lot of places, but I may not be able to dig it up until later when I have a little more time to look around.

I usually would see these boards showing up with SKUs at my distributors by now...both nforce4 and 945/955 are non-existent. I think you will see a flurry of info posted on various manufacturer's websites as the tech is officially "released" but you have got to be kidding me if you think there will be any kind of stock or availability at the time of launch.

As far as the 915/925 rumors go, I am sure there are a changes to the actual hardware to make a PentiumD work. The Asus PCDL used a i875 chipset for dual xeons..do you think any i875 board could have worked with dual xeons if the extra socket was there? Probably not. I am sure there are differences that will make the two (915/925 & PentiumD) incompatible...not just a new BIOS.

The Pentium D is not a redsign...it is two prescott cores on one die. The new AMD Dual Cores CPUs are a new design as will be the next generation dual core Intel product.

The Pentium-D and Pressler are examples of how not to do it: just slap two CPUs on the same die and call it a day. High clocked single cores like the upcoming Athlon 64 FX-57 will eat these massive chips for lunch in almost all benchmarks while consuming less energy. With the exception of some special far-fetched benchmarks, it will be pretty hard to justify the reason behind these dual cores.

Luckily, Intel's Yonah and AMD's Dual Athlon 64 cores show that better multi-core CPUs are on the way. At that point in time, we are entering the multi-core engine for real. And we can only applaud that because it unleashes a massive amount of CPU power upon the developers.

I don't think the A64 dual core is a "new" core. (its still just 2 A64's slapped together, like Prescott)

BUT A64's were designed with multicore technology in mind.
Each processor has multiple hypertransport links to connect to other CPU's (see: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_8796_8805,00.html )

This makes the CPU's actually scale more proportionally as you add more processors. And in dual processor (opteron) systems each socket gets its own memory bus. So it doubles the bandwidth, etc... So AMD scaled very well, b/c of its huge bandwidth advantage between the processors and to the FSB, etc..

dual core Intel, has some of the same problems dual Xeon's had (limited FSB and didn't scale well as you added processors)

where dual core AMD has some of the same great scalability that dual processor (opterons) had.
 
I would agree. The memory controllers are hurting Intel big time right now. problem is, they would significantly increase the cost of the CPU by increasing DIE size, and the amount of tech needed to develop it, in addition what would Intels chipset division think? AMD has it easy because they dont have a chipset division to worry about. (IMHO) and intel also does integrated graphics, ect... Making a switch to ondie memory controllers would definatly give Intel the needed boost to put AMD in the dust, but don't expect it anytime soon.

Oh, and Yonah's are nice. You wouldn't believe how nice...
