The next generation Humvee-type vehicle is already being tested in many different variations. This incarnation is called the Experimental Crowd-derived Combat Support Vehicle and was the winning design entry in the contest. DARPA really needs to work on its naming skills. :D

I'm going to catch tons of shit for saying this but : DARPA should not exist. Why? They're part of the government, and the government sucks at doing things. What they do is better handled by the private sector.

Wow...ohhh...ahhhh...so I wonder how much each one of these will cost the already overtaxed lower and middle class of this country?

This is often too painful to think about.

It looks pretty small for a humvee. It looks like just a regular car with armor and big tires.

Flypmode? lol ..... I bet Busta Rymes and Posse isn't going be too happy with the word play on Flip-Mode.

I agree. What does that thing hold, 2 people? How is that useful?

If the tax payers really really want to help out military this is what our men and women need then their crap vest they have now. Watch this video.

Where is the turret ring on this thing? Not much good unless you can mount a M2 or M240B up top with a 360 degree swivel. And all of those roof panels are WAY too small. Good luck squeezing through those once you get your IOTV and Chest Rig on.

Your comment makes no sense. The government has been placing RFP's and backing ideas with dollars since our government was our government. I cannot think of any reputable company who would create something for government purchase without it being a part of a sponsored government program. Dumping money into R&D to design a product for one buyer and surprise them with it in hopes they place an order sounds silly at best.

As far as that thing they made on the video, I do not get what it is supposed to accomplish. It looks cheaper to build than the hummer, but I cannot believe it stands up to an RPG attack or an AP mine. It looks like a fast support vehicle for a type of war we are probably going to never fight again.

What do the rich elite in the M.I.C. care? It isn't their "own" who is going out there to get their asses shot off in yet another useless and illegal war for profit. So some kid from the country, or the ghetto gets his ass blown to pieces, who gives a shit? I mean, there are plenty of other desperate people from the country, or the ghetto who are willing and ready to sign up for the "promise" of a college education and medical care.

And as we have seen, that promise is good until some of them go try to collect either one of those that is. IMHO, I just find this "pornographic" display of wares (regardless of the technological "achievement") from this "institution" who's business model is based solely on profiteering off death through illegal activity and fear, to be in bad taste.

The HMMWV without armor modifications is not resistant to RPGs or AP mines at all. The large, slightly concave bottom has a tendency to capture the blast wave and flip the vehicle over. The sharp corners and large flat sections (the thing is essentially a box on wheels) also maximize the effectiveness of rockets and grenades. Smaller V-shaped vehicles like this redirect the force of the explosions away from the vehicle, so you don't have to cover the thing in 10" of armor. Look at our anti-tank mine clearing vehicles and APCs to see what I mean. Theres barely any flat sections on them.

Although, I do think they took it a little too far. Those doors are way too small, and there is not a lot of use for 2 person vehicles.

I was not alluding to the fact that the hummer could stand up to an RPG attack, but while we are talking about designing the "2012" fighter then I suggest showing the public what we get for our money. Why should we be excited about this vehicle? What does it do better, and how much less is the TCO?

Better armor and fuel efficiency. Thats about it, it kinda sucks in every other way. It might be a good fast attack vehicle to compliment the hummer, but I can't see it as a replacement. Without a mounted gun (and the cramped interior limiting your ability to return fire), it better be fucking fast and have the ability to drive a long ass way.

As far as DARPA goes anyone questioning their existence should try going with out the internet for a week to understand the value of things that would not have existed without their funding.

Needs more mini-guns. Or rocket launchers.

Or just some TF2 Level 3 turrets. Mount one on each side, get a minigun on the top.

Just sayin'...

Looks like someone have been watching too much Christian Bale Batman movies.

It must be the lack of sleep, but...

It looks kind of like Halo's Warthog or a messed up DeLorean (in which case, where's the flux capacitor?) :D

I'm surprised you can say that with a straight face considering you're on the World Wide Web. Christ, at best you're trolling, but I doubt that, too many guys like you going around giving constitutionalists like me a bad name. Please educate yourself and turn off Fox News for a bit, in fact, turn off the TV. /rant

Looks interesting but remember people, this is a prototype. Replacing the HMMV has been needed for ages. Is this what the next platform is gonna look like, probably not, but you never know the good that comes from the data pulled from this thing, that's why it's called research.

Why more research? Just get a Marauder and be done with it.
It survives 7 pounds of C4 under its belly with just a flat tire, according to Top Gear new season's episode. Thankfully the spare was untouched.
They tried the same with a Hummer H3, there was not much of it left...

lol... the overtaxed middle class of this country? Your serious?

Anyway as someone with atleast a couple hundred thousand miles in humvee's over the years of service I have; I see a lot of issues with this vehicle as an infantryman. I can see the point of trying to get something developed and designed but as a warfighter just from the little I saw this is gonna be no good for anything other than an admin vehicle.

Here's the Top Gear part about the Marauder:

U.S. Army has plenty of MRAP variants that are pretty equivalent to that Marauder. The problem with that class of vehicles is that they are simply too large and too heavy for certain environments. The replacement for the HMMWV needs to be just as maneuverable as the HMMWV was, while addressing some of the flaws of a very old design.

I take it this vehicle is developmental, so what materials do they use?

The beige stuff looks like laser cut foam or resin and the blue tape is that to stop scratches o the corners or is it structural.

Shame there is such an abrupt ending. looks neat

That (assumed) turret spot in the rear is asking for trouble. Having pulled someone out of a humvee, it is cumbersome enough with all of our battle rattle. To make matters worse, with only two doors that front passenger (or driver) seat had better fold down...fast. Also.. the thing looks extremely light. Compared to my up-armored HMMWV, this thing is like a tin can. I'll keep my 175 lbs. doors if they keep me from getting shot at. The curved bottom is welcomed, though. It's hard to tell how wide the thing is from that picture... but rollovers are also concerning.

looks like the rear diff might have also been knocked out.

Two counter arguments:

1) The Internet.

2) GPS.

Both originate from DARPA, both are things you highly rely on for your modern lifestyle, both are things the private industry had no interest in getting up and running.

There are more, those are just some of the biggest.

Yes, you have been catching a lot of flak for good reason. First off, DARPA and the government mostly employ private companies to do things for them. Those that actually work for the government use what is developed by the private sector or they are developing stuff that the private sector can never see. They also do research in a number of areas that help more than just the defense of the country. There are many, many small private companies that get most of their funding from DARPA and then use it to help their commercial sector projects. For instance, there is a particular company that specializes in Informatics. They make things to help kids with learning disabilities or learning impairments. Without the funding from DARPA, they would be unable to do the research that goes behind those systems. There are also a lot of modern medical innovations that originated from DARPA funding and projects.

Face it, without DARPA there may be far less innovation than what we have now. Is there too much money being spent on defense? Perhaps. But there is also a horrendous amount of money being spent on worthless domestic programs too. Government "is" big business and always has been. It's like a big company where we get to continually vote in less competent board members who don't care about the company at all as long as their paychecks keep coming.

That vehicle looks nice for something in the next Micheal Bay movei... thats about it though. As mentioned before, a 2 person vehicle is pretty useless. The "fold down seats" yea useless as well. No way am I fitting through that little space with full battle rattle on. Most Americans would be lucky to fit though it in just their regular clothing. Not really sure what they were thinking with this one.

It's a decent start though but still falls way to short. And the Maruader, theres like 4 different variations of the MRAP. Not to mention that thing looks ridiculously to big, to heavy, and to rollover friendly. Admittedly I didnt watch the links though so maybe they did some rollover tests and I'm wrong on that part.

Looks like they designed the rear sidewindows (and bodywork) to deflect hits into the vehicle. Sure is the opposite shape of what I'd expect at least. But if this comes with armor plating as thick as paper that won't really matter anyway.

They could put some serious armor plating in the rear. With the turret facing to the rear as well this should make for one heck of a getaway vehicle. ;)

Yes the overtaxed america middle class, there is no reason to have many of the military tech being developed now. It's all spending so that what, the world police is safe? Just get the troops and bases out of these countries and save a few trillion dollars while you're at it.

Just grab the warthog from Halo and be done with it ;) it can be flipped over by one person, it can do aerial acrobatics and it is nearly indestructible. Or as Chimel said, get the marauder. Better body armor is also probably a good idea.

I really odn't understand why the military spending is so much. I get that it helps to contain unemployment and city gangs, but why bring "democracy" to people who don't want it. so much of today smells of wag the dog syndrome.

Drive the Marauder in sand dunes and let us know the results.

The Marauder has some weak spots and design issues, at least in my opinion. Our existing Humvee doesn't have drivetrain parts hanging out below the frame, but the Marauder does. That hurts ground clearance, you can get stuck more easily, and those parts can be blown up or damaged more easily by IEDs. The lack of solid axles on the Humvee is a big advantage.

Looks like someone have been watching too much Christian Bale Batman movies.

When I saw it I thought "This will probably show up in the next movie, since the old Batmobile got blown up in the last one." Do they want a sports car or a combat vehicle?

That looks fucking stupid, and worthless. If I'd have had to ride in one of those on one of my last deployments I would have been pissed.

Then the private sector can all move to china, and we can all rely on china for military might to protect twain just like we rely on china for rare earth metals.

I'll just stick to my M1117ASV thank you very much. I've already lost two to EFP's and no one got hurt. Well, ok, the gunner of a small piece of the shrapnel in the ass cheek... but he was just fine.

So you want to talk about vehicles that look like Halo's Warthog? Have a gander at this...

I'd buy one of those in a heart beat. :D
