My room had been shut all day, the air was at 78* F in the house, and I come in to find my CPU idling at 60C. Nooooo good!

I decided that 2.4GHz just wasn't worth these ridiculous temperatures :( My Thermaltake Silent Boost is just not cut out for overclocking like this. I dropped it down to 200x11.5 and dropped vcore from 1.85 to 1.7v. That last 100MHz just isn't worth the temps.

My CPU is now idling at 46* C, but I also opened up my room and dropped the AC in the house ot 74.

That extra .15v must create a LOT more heat :eek:
 
Yes, voltage creates heat. :p

You should of ran Prime and checked the temps at full load.. :p

It's idling at 43/32 now instead of 60/40 (CPU/NB)
 
I'm not a noob, :rolleyes: I've been OC'ing for 5 years. I just didn't realize that roughly a .125v increase could generate +10* C extra temp. Ouch.
 
Rizen...your temps seems high. On my case, using the same cooler and a 2400+ Mobile, I was running it at 2380mhz (170x14) @1.8v in the BIOS, and my LOAD temps were only hitting 55c...this is in a room that maintains about 24c (75f) ambient, case temps I don't know but I have (2) quiet 80mm intakes and a single 80mm exhaust in addition the the power supply exhaust. I idled at 44c or so.

This is a moot point now though, since watercooling I idle at 37c and loads of 45c.

Well there are a few things to consider here.. 1) I was at 1.9 in the BIOS, 1.84-1.85v actually reported. Certain ABIT NF7-S boards shortchanged the voltage by about .05 lower than what was selected. So 1.8 for you might have been 1.75, which would be .1 lower than me.

2) My AS5 still hasn't "set" completely.

3) My nForce2 chipset is getting uber hot because the fan broke, that's affecting temps a bit I believe.

When I set the AC at 74 and let the room cool off a bit (Florida heat affects my temps as well), I idle 43-45C, low 50s on load @ 2300MHz at 1.7v actual (1.75v BIOS). It takes a lot of voltage to get the last little bit of performance out of this chip, and that voltage creates a LOT more heat I guess. I will water cool as soon as I can afford it.

EDIT: But you have a Barton core as well, right?
