Darksiders [PC]

Whoah. That just stopped me dead in my tracks and raised my interest level in this considerably. Time for me to catch up.

Darksiders has nothing on the charm, character and story of the Soul Reaver games.

Whenever I unplug it, it says "Please Plug in Your Controller".. even if I start my system with it unplugged and the game.. Its stupid :( makes me sad. I will re install tomorrow and try.

Are you unplugging it in-game or beforehand? Seems like if you don't have a controller plugged in when you start the game, how would the game even know you own one? If it's still doing it, you might uninstall any software related to your controller, too. At the point the game is seeing some kind of resident program.

With the game, I'm pretty far in and still enjoying it. I still think it leans more in a God of War direction, but the Zelda comparisons are certainly valid. The combat and weapons coming straight from GoW still outweigh a few puzzle elements, IMO.

The game is bad ass.

I also liken this more to Soul Reaver more than Zelda. Sure the items are the same as in zemda, but its more linear in its game play. Zelda was linear but it gave you the illusion of freedom of game play with the big overland zone. There were side quests and fish to be caught and stuff like that.
But in Soul Reaver your ass was on a mission. No time to catch any fish. Just time to eat peoples faces. Much like this.

The only side quest is that I've seen as of yet is the armor. And its not as good as a quest as the big goron sword. This is, revisit every place you've been every time you get a new item and hope there is something there new to do since you can use the grappling hook or what have you

Great game so far though. Great boss deaths. I like War. He's very very very pissed! lol

I had to necro a thread, but is this worth is on the PC? Or should just jump for it on the XBox? I mean....sounds like it's just another console port, does the keyboard add anything?

Thanks!

I can't speak from experience with a controller as I don't use one to play anything other then driving games (thumbs vs entire hand/wrist/arm/precision movements, etc) but I found the keyboard controls to be great for this game. It is NOT a lazy port as per being able to bind any key to whatever action (ex: dead rising 2 doesn't even offer key mapping, some games don't allow mouse1/2 to be mapped, etc) -- usually if a developer doesn't allow for key mapping to be done "properly" on the entire keyboard & mouse you know much less thought went into the PC version...and this game absolutely does not suffer from it.

The resolution and textures will be superior on the PC version and you can also just plug in an xbox controller if for some reason you think using it will give you a better experience. Honestly, the outdated and long in the tooth consoles shouldn't even be compared to modern PCs any longer -- except if we're to talk about how they hold back progress (man I'm biased).

No DRM. Put the disc in and run. Dedicated machine that doesn't take up a lot of space. Easily hooked up to my Plasma (I ain't hooking up my PC to my plasma, I don't want the start menu burned into my screen!) Recliner > desk chair...plenty of reasons to love my 3
360.

Oh, and my PC being high maitenance...still need to RMA my damned corsair RAM.

Without a doubt the strength of a console is the ease of use, won't argue that. DRM? save for a system requring constant internet access for an SP only game or somehow sending out sys info -- it's just not that big of a deal -- why should it be? Unfortunately something needs to be in place to appease publishers/studios to hopefully ensure the maximum amount of money is reaped in the PC market (the much, much more open and diabolical PC market hehe)

Not quite sure what you mean about high maintenance.

I'm playing through it right now, I've been using my 360 wireless controller just because I normally do for action slashes. I think it's worth getting on PC just because it'll look better, maybe I'll try kb/m later on tonight.

I haven't had a problem with kb/mouse. I did have to turn the sensitivity down on the mouse though cause you go into aim mode I was FLYING around the screen.

Again. Truly LOVING this game. Straga's death! YES!!!!

Also, the first boss you fight in the game is the hardest so far. I'm almost to the end. 1 final boss to fight, and its funny that the first boss was the hardest.
But the game isnt really about boss fights. A lot of the mini bosses/hard enemies are really challenging the first time or two you fight them. Oh and the blade dancer floating women...ugh I hate you so much. You kick my ass beyond belief

RAM.

I just bought Darksiders from Gamestops online black Friday (weekend) sale. I received my confirmation email and it had this in it

"This game has 3 licenses available. This means you may install the game on other computers and activate it up to 3 times."

So is this the publishers DRM or Gamestop putting their own DRM spin on the sale?

Darksiders really is a great game on the PC. Great visuals, controls, and I don't think I encountered a single game-related glitch (the savegame issue was related to Steam).
It's definitely worth purchasing at full price, let alone on sale.

- No PC graphics options aside from resolution
- Xbox360 controller works flawlessly and the game will change itself to a xbox360 mode if it detects it.
- Eyefinity works with a hexedit tweak.

Unless your plasma is old or complete shit, burn-in won't be a problem. Unless you plan to leave it on a single static screen for months at a time without ever turning either off. Turn the TV off every night and you're fine.

Digging up this old thread, I was wondering if anyone could comment on controls? I'm currently using KB/Mouse and I'm happy enough, but I was curious if the 360 controller or PS3 controller would work better? I have a PS3 so I could plug in a Dualshock 3, but I don't mind picking up a 360 wired controller for the $20 deal from gohastings if it works better.

I was in the same situation you are about a year ago, but sony does not have drivers for the ps3 controllers for 64bit operating systems. In the end I bought the wired 360 controller and it seems to work very well in any game ive used it for. So for 20 bucks i would go for it.

Awesome game. Playing everything in max setting at 1920x1050 with a hd6870 and it LOOKS AWESOME..... the only puzzling issue I have is it would stutter now and then even though the frame rate is very high so no clue what is up with that.

This game is the shit...I'm not sure how a "gamer" could not enjoy this game. It's got alot of substance to it...from story line to actual gameplay. It does somewhat remind of Soul Reaver accept with a Devil May Cryish twist on the gameplay. This is what I wished the The Witcher would've been...I know The Witcher was an RPG but it was too rpg'ish for me and I just kept wishing the game would've been more action oriented...enter Darksiders.

I wish I never bought darksiders. I had a gut feeling I wasnt going to like it. I didnt like God of war at all & this game even tho its different has a certain GOW/Devil May Cryish feel.

Wasted 10 bux in my opinion.

So I do have my ps3 controller working. However, I picked up a 360 controller as well just to have since other games may benefit.

I wonder if I should just stick with KB/Mouse? Esp for aiming?

One of my favorite games of 2010. Not the most original or challenging but very fun and addicting. Also, you need a controller (preferably 360) to play this game the way it should be played.

I'm not sure I love this game. I picked it up last week (steam sale). I've been playing with a wired controller but find the aim movement (right joystick) very slow. I'm stuck right now trying to kill tiamat with my fairly week character.

I had quite a few crashes but have not had one the last couple of days (the crashes seemed to occur when cut scene or death occurred). The only other game I've owned the crashed regularly has been King Arthur (other games with 0 crashes include king bounty, dragon age, me[1,2], far cry, nwn[1,2], deep space, and a gazillion others). And this is with a 32 bit version of windows xp sp3 8800gts).

I'm going to try to kill tiamat with kb/mouse this afternoon since the controller moves like a dog but I suspect that at this point i'm stuck for good.

The right stick aiming is a bit sluggish. You only need to do a little bit of it though, right? Just to get a lock on to a torch and then a bomb stuck to Tiamat. You can get the bomb onto her using just the "combat" lock on.

Hum. DIdn't realize combat lock worked with throw; I should try that if kb/m doesn't work.

i really really really enjoy this game, sure it's not even close to original but it does everything well. The game is essentially a more mature version of the legend of zelda, and I like it's theme quite a bit more than Zelda in general. Also, for it being post-apocalyptic it certainly carries a variety of environmental themes. I love the blending of modern technology and fantasy as well, it's very cool from a visual standpoint.

It's also useful later on when you're fighting big groups of enemies with cars nearby. Just hit b->l trigger->r trigger and become a car tossing dervish.

I'm looking to pick up Darksiders and debating on the PC vs 360 version.

Both are hooked up to the same 58" plasma. I have a 360 controller for the PC. The PC has a dual core E8400 and an RADEON 5870.

I can pick up the 360 version of Darksiders for about $15. The PC version is around $27 on Steam.

Will the gameplay be noticeable smoother on the PC with my setup or should I just get the 360 at almost half the price?

It was $10 on Steam a few days ago.

I really like the game except for The Black Throne level. I like puzzles but it just seemed to drag on and on. I'm past it now though and working on recovering the Abyssal Armor pieces.

Definitely would have picked it up for $10. Sorry I missed that. Good think I have a ton of stuff in my "need to play" queue. Will see if it drops again.

It was on sale for $7.50 on steam a few days ago. Been playing it a lot and well worth th 7.50 I spent on Steam.

I actually have both :) The loads pretty much the same as it did for the xbox 360 for me (I install the game to hard disk for my xbox 360). The game "feels" like it has a FPS lock on it. So it felt pretty much identical to the PC. It's almost a 1:1 port actually. But because I like gaming on my PC over the xbox 360 I perfer it. I have to admit this is still a very good game and want to finish all my steam achievements for it. I think there is like two I don't have :p Dante Inferno was also a good game to me. I thought it would come out on PC, but it never did :( I still like heaven and hell games that you're either the good guy or the bad guy :)

It's an ok game; I think the controls are not the best (esp the aim). If they had provided real k/b controls it would have been a lot better. I it is so much easier to use a mouse to aim. Anyways I finally did kill tiamat (I have to admit that figuring out what I am doing made it a lot easier). Not sure how far I am in the game; it is a bit of a chore but ok. Right now I am shooting some angles trying to get a hammer. Again with the gun the aiming thing is a bit of a pain and the camera angle is a bit off.

I'm stuck on tiamat, I've been using a gamepad all the way up to him. I think I'll have to switch and figure out the keyboard/mouse controls for that fight. I am TERRIBLE at aiming with the gamepad.

Well I'm progressing. The game stop crashing (it crashed twice near the start; since then it has only crashed once so I guess it is fairly stable). Of course now I'm stuck again. I'm in The Black Throne Tower; killed the second robotic hammering gizmo but for the life of me I can't figure out what to do with the mirrors and red chains on the way back. Bleh. It seems liek one of those puzzles you have to get the timing just right.

Time to bump this old thread up again. I bought the game in a sale a while back but only started playing it the other day. Enjoying it so far, but come to what is possibly a game breaking glitch.

In the twilight cathedral where you have to take the swords and put them into the hands of the angel statues to open the doors, I picked up one of the swords and must have pressed attack before it was loose because my sword disappeared and the sword I was picking up stayed in the ground but I could no longer interact with it. Basically this means I can't unlock the next door. Has anyone come across this problem and fixed it? Its kind of annoying, my last save was a while ago and I hate replaying sections I just played.

Just ended up going back to an earlier save game.

The game is pretty fun though, I wasn't expecting it to be this good. Its like Zelda without sidequests, but still exploring for items, similar dungeon styles and more hack-and-slash. There's heaps of Zelda-type references, like collecting 4 life shards to get an extra "skull" added to you're health, a weapon like a boomerang, little dungeon puzzles involving lighting torches, dragging blocks, using bomb-plants to blow holes in things, etc.

Yup. I wish more games would "rip off" Zelda, it's fun!

For $4, Darksiders is a great deal. For that matter, you can get the remasters for both games for $10. I had a wonderful time with both games. Plus, they are massive. If you played them back to back you're looking at a Skyrim or Dragon Age 3 level of commitment.

Just imagine Zelda, God of War, and a little bit of Destiny tossed in for good measure.
