Wanted to clean out the sponge dust covers on my DT990pro headphones and the ring to release the sponge required me to lift it up with a small slotted screw driver. The screw driver slipped and tore a small hole in the white paper-like material that covers the driver. Still sounds fine but wondering if I should do something to fix the small tear. I blame beyerdynamic for not providing an easier method to remove the ring.

You should buy a new set of headphones with your visa card and blame visa for not stopping you.

There really is nothing you can do...if it sounds fine and you cannot tell, then don't worry about it. Or use them as a pair to modify another pair of BD phones. I hear the 880 are more 'fun'.
 
So you break the headphones , you blame the company that made them for it?

Seriously , be a man. Save up , buy another pair. Don't be THAT guy.

I damaged my Sennheiser HD600's and saved and bought the HD650's. Shit happens , better get use to it.
 
I can understand being frustrated with poor design decisions, but yeah...be more careful next time with a high-value item.

I should return them to beyerdynamic and demand they fix them for free. :cool:

I can probably fix it myself with liquid paper or something.
 
I'm with the majority on this one. I have empathy for your situation (I've broken things, too), but don't blame beyer! This is all on you. Take it as a life lesson to be more careful when working on high value items (or, if you are extreme, a lesson to NOT work on high value items) -- and if the performance of the headphones are noticeably affected, spring for a new pair.

Hopefully it's just cosmetic damage, though. Best of luck to you.
 
<sigh> I was being tongue-in-cheek. Of course I do not blame beyerdynamic, but cleaning the foam inserts is a necessity so they should provide an easier method to remove the ring that holds the insert in place. I even looked up how to remove the foam insert on headfi and they said not to use a sharp object to do it but there is no non sharp object I have that could do what needed to be done.
 
Tough break, but not much you can do. I'd use them until they wear out or sell at a bargain price and buy something new.

I just sold my DT990 Pro, yesterday. It was an excellent set of cans, but I got tired of the "clamp" feel on my head. I'm thinking about getting the Audio-Technica AD900.

My biggest complaint about the DT880s I've played with was the clamping force. It's so hard to not be sensitive about it after having worn Audio Technica cans for years since they're so damn comfy. Granted I haven't used the AD900s specifically but they use the same basic design; if they have the same pads as the AD700s then that's a shame because to me they aren't nearly as comfortable but overall my A700/A900s just disappear on my head after awhile.
 
My DT990pro don't clamp near as tight as my ATH-M50. I'm going to go for the Fostex T50rp and mod them so if they are as good as they say I won't need the DT990pro for much listening. We'll soon see if these claims are FoS or not. If they are FoS I will create a new headfi account just so I can lambaste them.
 
Are 598 better than 595 or just a cosmetic change? I had 595 and for less money the DT990pro are better.
I like Sennheiser headphones but they overprice all of their higher end products.

I picked up the HD 598, this morning. Bought them used from a local Guitar Center. Can't say I'm overly impressed with the build quality. I don't think they sound any better than my old DT990 Pro, but they don't feel as "clampy", which is good. I still have an AD900 ordered, so we'll see how I like it compared to the 598.
 
Please post your impressions comparing AD900 because those interest me too. Although; in Canada they do not sell AD900 for some odd reason. I can get AD700 but not AD900.

I will. In fact, I just got an e-mail from Amazon stating my 900 will be delivered tomorrow instead of Monday. :)
 
I was debating between the DT 990 Pro and the HD 598. After doing some research, the DT990 Pro is better in every aspect except for comfortability (clamping). So I got myself the DT990 Pro, which is also cheaper. They are the best headphones I have ever bought.

Okay, I've spent much of the day using my new AD900. My impressions, so far:

  • They're easily the least "clampy" phones I've tried
  • Very light, comfortable on my head, but my ears itch while wearing them - very strange
  • I've played several games and all sound excellent; same with music
I'm definitely returning the Senn 598 and probably the AD900, too. I think my DT990 Pro sounded better than either, but they were just too tight on my head.

After some searching and talking to an AM radio host (friend), I'm going to try the DT880 Premium.

I had a pair of small portable headphones that made the inside of my ears itch and that is something I want to avoid. Won't 880 clamp like 990pro too? Thanks for the comments.
 
Yeah, the itchy ear thing is a deal breaker for me, too. I did some reading on the Beyers. The consensus is that the Pro versions were much more clampy than the Premium. My radio friend agreed. He uses a lot of headphones and said his DT880 feel very good with little, if any, clamp sensation. I'll let you know once I get them.
 
I received my DT 990 Premium phones and can say they are infinitely more comfortable than my previous DT 990 Pro. The Premiums feel great. They're light, soft on the ears and have no clamp-effect at all. They have just the right fit to keep the phones in place.

I actually ordered a DT 880, but they were out of stock. I always loved the sound of my 990 Pro, so am very pleased to get the same excellent sound in these comfy 990 Premiums. I got the 600 ohm, which many reviews claim have better sound than the 32 or 250 ohm versions.
 
I had actually ordered the DT990 consumer version because the online store claimed they were out of stock of the cheaper pro version. But what they sent me was the pro version. I was hopping mad after that and reported them to Amazon for bait and switch and made them compensate me for it too.
