hello all...i have absolutely zero clue as to how it happened but there is physical damage to my raptor x where the SATA jumper plugs in.

The plastic gaurd behind the pins that the jumper plugs into broke off...completely.

Is there any way to salvage data off the drive? im thinking an external sata enclosure most likely

I hate the SATA design. My brother's broke off and he had to get a new one.

I think you are SOL.

Same thing happened to one of my Seagates. My advice is, leave it outside the case, carefully plug the power and data in and make sure it's seated right, boot computer, make sure the cables don't move, move data, RMA.

Ya, SATA is fragile...but it is an internal interface and thus not made to be robust and withstand any abuse.

If the pins are still in good shape, you can superglue the plastic part back on and it'll work fine. Just make sure the metal contact surfaces stay clean.

The SATA plug is just a shitty design.

Has anybody ever attempted an RMA for this design problem?

Yes, about a year ago with a 200 gig WD, it was only 4 month old and had only ever been in the one system.. They replaced it without any problems.. I think it falls under the material defect portion of most warranties.. Your rma mileage with them may vary..
The drive still worked fine plugged in with the sata cable taped into proper postion.. So, I got my data without much issue.. Good thing too, I kept saves, patches, maps, and mods for all of my games on that drive.. Over 140 gigs worth.. It would have take forever to find and re-download them all.. A sturdy bar on the bottom of that connector would be all that would be needed to prevent that shit from happening..

Now that I know it has been done, it gives me a little hope for when it happens to me! ;)

RapterX has a 5yr warranty too I believe.

If they would not fix it (unlikely) it is a repair a skilled tech with a soldering iron can do.

You can always avoid this by using some silicon glue and literally GLUEING the driveend of the cable to the drive to remove any chance of breakage.

But yeah, you gotta be real careful working around these things, the SATA connector design really sucks.

i remember someone on this forum soldering a cable to the remaining contacts...
