...since there seems to be some doubt as to the correct answer to everything.

With the possible exception of SWMBO, the answer is always "D".
 
Once I've got my upgrade online then I've maxed my "D".
But then I'm hopeing for ~140 Ghz from 10 boxen which is not to shabby ......... :p

If a broke college student like myself can "D" then pretty much anyone can. Seriously, I just paid for a single gallon of gas in quarters. I should stabilize at about 9500PPD up from 4500PPD before the farm rebuild.

I'm doing my part. My POS P4 2.8 w/ 512 meg of RAM was just upgraded to a Pentium-D (P4 architecture) and 1 gig of RAM. Since it's a work machine and not mine I only run the regular console clients on it. Besides, the IT department finally got the stick out of their ass and started making images for the machines that have the users with regular user accounts instead of local administrators. Therefore, it's currently not possible for me to install the SMP client. Hell, I can't even install the regular consoles as services. Doesn't matter, the machine only goes down when there is a power outage which is usually rare.

So, at work I went from 2.8 to 6Ghz of folding power. I'm doing my D a little at a time.

Although I do need to get back to my friend's house and install 2 console clients back on his E6400 since he fubared his install which means he formatted and reinstalled. Not my machine and the client is still very beta so no SMP client for that machine even though the processor ran the SMP client for at least a year while I had it.

 
Damnit, thanks to D I had to update the boxen folding power of my signature yet again. Plus I thinking that by this weekend I'll have to raise it a bit more. Sure, it will probably not be more than 2.2Ghz to add, but it's better than nothing.:cool:

You're lucky. Everyone I know including family would be very opposed to having their systems borged, and to a large extent I understand.

His computers are my computers. Basically, I can do anything I want to the system he has as long as it doesn't interfere with his normal day to day stuff. Hell, I have a key to his house since at one time I had about 4 or 5 systems of my own at his place crunching away.

Well paranoia from Kendrak's post in another thread about him and Evil's plans have made me pull the trigger on 2 Q6600s to replace the E6300 and E2160, with luck they will be up next week. I will beg SWMBO for forgiveness later :D

I can't wait till May.. Another Q6600 will be in the pipe for me.. to replace my "aging" e4300, which does everything but FOLD at amazing speeds. I think, honestly, other than folding the hardware has far far outstripped the software.

I still have some software that runs super slow even with the fastest system available. There's one cartographic app in particular. I'm not a gamer, but recent games like Crysis cannot run smoothly at high resolutions and all quality settings enabled. Besides F@H, there remains quite a bit of software that even the next generation or two of hardware releases can't run fast enough, and I'm not even getting into the professional stuff like 3D rendering for theatrical/cinematographic work. Entire farms are required for certain pro-level applications. For the average home user I agree with what you wrote.
 
Sorry to barge in like this, but I have to say I admire the dedication you guys have for "D" and dc'ing in general.

I am (well was, until I registered) a lurker at this forum for a while and crunch some for the Dutch Power Cows. If I wasn't in the subteam I'm part off for the past 5 years I would join you guys.

Speaking of "D" I have a Q6600 in the box that is not yet folding. :eek: Enough with this forum. There is hardware to install. Q6600 tonight and E6700 tomorrow. I already have the mojo cooling down for when the time comes to overclock. I didn't really understand overclocking until mojo.

Don't worry yet Kendrak. I'm going to up my ppd but not enough to catch you anytime soon. I think I may be able to match you or come in just a little ahead...but you are so far in front now it would take a year to catch up. Worked late and got the Q6600 up to 3.24GHz and it is running really cool so I think this might be one to get to 3.4+Ghz. I'll try and get the E6700 system up and running tonight. Now there is one wild card that would change everything- an E8400. A relative might let me fold on their beast.....:D

Clock that puppy up and let it rip! I have a lapped e4300 @ 3Ghz here that I ran prime95 (small FFT stress) stable for 9.5 hours last night, and I'm thinking about using it for some folding. If only I had another spare MB to put it in...:rolleyes:


 
All Q6600 G0's are capable of 3.6Ghz! (assumes your mobo can support it) It may take more effort, but get a TRUE and work the OC! And invest in DDR26400 or higher memory so it can easily do the 800mhz you will need from the memory to run 1:1

Not all. One of my Q6600s will not stay stable higher than 3.51. All three I have are G0s. It also has good cooling on it with an Ultima90 which is pretty close in performance to the TRUE.

I do have that CPU on a P965 board rather than P35s like the other two Q660s but I know this motherboard is good for at least 450 FSB with C2Ds and was rock solid stable at 425 FSB with an E6400 for more than a year.
