Does anyone know of a good D&D/Adventure game? I am looking for something that does not require a monthly membership.

If you're looking for a D&D based RPG, Drakensang is pretty good. There's also the Neverwinter Nights games. Off the top of my head I can't think of any other recent D&D based games (Not counting DDO because it's got a monthly sub).

Not really all that many recent DnD adventure games. Especially any that pay attention to the actual rules.

There was the neverwinter nights series, temple of elemental evil, and if you go older then those, you have to look at the balders gate/planescape/icewind dale series.

adventure and D&D are a little contradictory, as D&D usually means RPG.

Are you more focused on the D&D ruleset, or the "elves, ogres, wizards, fairies" type theme with a more traditional adventure type gameplay.

Something with a more adventure feel with D&D type rules might be the Vampire game made on the source engine.

If you're looking for just the fantasy type setting, the Might and Magic series (Dark Messiah was more of a shooter, but a pretty great game for the setting)

edit: Vampire: bloodlines

Maybe I should clarify a little. Not specifically looking for D&D, but more like medieval fantasy. Some like Heroes of Might and Magic IV/V, Diablo, and so forth.

Just stick to the tried and true Neverwinter Nights. There's both community made modules and online Persistent Worlds for both NWN1 and NWN2. More than enough to keep you occupied for a while.

^ Yup. Skip Neverwinter Nights (even if the graphics are better) and pick up Baldur's Gate instead. You can probably get both games and both expansions for $30 total.
If you like those, grab the Icewind Dale games, too.

Drakensang is not D&D based though.

Drakensang is based on the German D&D and has been in development for over 15 years!
I'm playing it and think it is pretty good, an excellent way to pass a few hours a day.
The only caveat being that sometimes there is no clue where you need to go so you need to remember where some people are, look around as you do other quests or use the web for help :)
It doesnt happen too often so isnt a real distraction.

The English version comes with a high res texture option and it looks really nice :)
The German version does not come with the hires textures but they can be downloaded for free (1.7GB).
It has pretty deep D&D roots so the leveling and battle complexity is all there.
It offers weeks of play so overall, very worth the money.

Drakensang is not D&D, it's simply based on DSA (Das schwarze Auge - The black eye) and really does differ quite a bit from D&D. I'm no D&D nerd neither am i a DSA nerd, but i have played both and they are in fact different.

Can you explain the differences (genuinely interested :)).

lol no i can't....last time i played either one was over 20 years ago.

If you are looking for something like Heroes of Might and Magic, take a good look at the newish Kings Bounty, the Legend. It has almost the same style of game play.

I can't remember any new style diablo hack and slashers, maybe sacred, titan quest is the same style as diablo, only the maps do not appear to be random.

Kings Bounty is quite nice too but I got bored of it after a while.
It hasnt got the depth of Drakensang and is more like a kids version.

I seriously recommend Drakensang, just alt-tabbed out of the game to type this :)

Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2. Both of them are long games and have multiple expansion packs as well as fan made modules.

If you want something similar to Diablo, look into Divine Divinity. I believe there is a demo out.

Drakensang is a great game but nothing D&D in it. It's a traditional RPG that is similar to D&D, but that's where it ends.

I wish a new, kickass turn-based D&D game would come out. I'm sick of the bastardized "real-time.. with pause function" crap where one basically sits and watches the game play by itself in combat, especially since the AI likes to run the enemy like they are grandmasters and the player characters like they aren't sure whether they should be fighting or masturbating. Even when you pause and tell them what to do they wander around like they are confused.

Hell, it'd kick ass if they would just redo the original Gold Box games with modern graphics. Of course then there was that sad abortion they called Pool of Radiance 2.. *shudder*

I long for the days of games like Might and Magic I through World of Xeen and Wizardry I-VII, but with complete GUI overhauls.

Agreed. Turn based is the only way to go. Temple of elemental evil was a VERY faithful version of a classic D&D module and D&D rule set implemented in a CRPG.

I agree with everything you said. I have yet so see or play a real-time game that was worth a damn.

I think I still have Temple of Elemental Evil somewhere that I bought for $5, but I could never get the game to work. It just kept crashing while trying to get it started. Supposedly it's a good game, though.

Still, the Baldur's Gate games rocked. Until something better comes along, those are the benchmark, IMO. Neverwinter Nights 1 was okay, but #2 sucked.
I'd love to see a BG3.

There shouldn't be much discussion. the most recent and best ones are

Baldurs Gate 1 and 2

Never Winters Night 1 and 2

Ice Wind Dale 1 and 2

The Witcher? Anyone? C'mon.

Temple of Elemental Evil can be a lot of fun as a dungeon crawler. If you need help with crashes/patches/updates/new content go to the Circle of 8 forums.

BG/NWN can be fun, too. I got tired of the Umber Hulk in every basement. Baldur's Gate II can be quite difficult. NWN is great fun as a rogue.

The Witcher and Sacred 2. NWN2 Mysteries of Westgate is due to be released this month. The reviews are already rolling out and it seems to be good.

Drakensang on the other hand... Playing it right now and its pretty medicore. Armor and weapons suck - never any good looking drops or stuff to buy. Magic is utterly useless so don't roll a mage unless you are a masochist.

YES!!!!

^^^^^Sigh...they don't make rpg's like those listed above anymore. I still remember the time I started at BG1 and played all the way till the end of BG2 including expansions. Most epic adventure ever.

I've played the GoldBox games but I missed out on BG1 and BG2. I should get those along with the Icewind Dale series... Will the BG games even run on XP?

Temple of Elemental Evil is brutal. Its also the most D&D-faithful game, ever, even implementing things like the 5-foot-step, charging, total defense, etc. But its like playing tabletop with a sadistic DM that enjoys killing you. Because of the difficulty, beating it is rewarding. TOEE even has Ironman mode...no messing with stats, no saving the game (it does when you exit, but no save/reload cheese), and if a character in your party dies, hes gone. Theres a normal mode too of course. TOEE was a buggy mess at release, if you play it you basically have to use the "Circle of 8" fan patch.

Any recent game from BG1 and up will run on xp/vista/win 7. There can be odd issues with BG1, its early windows95 era. However, IF you play BG1, there is a thing online to play BG1 in the BG2 engine, which is a huge step up. DO THIS. You get higher resolutions, all the BG2 class updates and kits, etc. Even now, playing BG1 all the way through BG2's expansion with a single character is pretty much the most epic thing you can do in PC gaming.

Icewind Dale is like arcade-mode BG, lots of combat and less story.

Planescape: Torment is the best PC RPG, but has less replay value than BG1/2.
NWN 1 and 2 are both great games but neither quite live up to the old Black Isle/Bioware standards. Then again, nothing else does either. Their next big game is Dragon Age or whatever, second half '09, looks very promising.

I still play tabletop every weekend, so...yeah D&D geek.
games by D&D edition (game rules):
2nd edition: BG1, BG2, IWD 1, PS:T
3rd edition: IWD 2, TOEE, NWN1
3.5: NWN2
4: nothing yet!

The Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale's were great. Too bad they didn't keep going.
