Hey guys, I am looking to build a moderately cheap desktop very soon. Within' a week, so I don't have a lot of time to really do much research on what's what anymore.

I am upgrading from an;

AMD Brisbane 3600+ AM2
Biostar t550 motherboard
2gb ddr2 800 ram
1tb hitachi hdd 7.2k rpm
corsair 620w psu
pny 6800gs "over clocked" gpu

My laptop is an;
e1705
intel c2d t7600
2gb ddr2 667
320gb hitachi hdd 7.2k rpm
7950 gtx

I will not be using any parts from my old desktop build, except the following:
mouse, keyboard and acer 22" monitor

I would prefer it to have a better GPU than the laptop, for gaming but not that important. The only games I play on occasion is; Unreal Tournament, Starcraft and Battlefield 2 (i will be keeping the laptop, so if i need to game i can play those games on the laptop no problem)

I will mostly be using the desktop for development stuff (web site designing and building), photography storage/post processing of photos (up to 500+ pics at a time in RAW ~10MB per pic) and surfing the web

What is important is at least a 1tb hdd (im partial to hitachi)

My spending limit is $400.

Motherboard, CPU, RAM, GPU, PSU and case is what I need; do not need any optical drives. I am also not afraid to over clock to get the performance needed.

My brisbane build has been setup as a dedicated backup box for a server, so i can possibly exchange some parts to save money (buying something cheaper to put in the brisbane system so that i can use something from it, such as the PSU)

I know they are pretty steep, but I need a desktop.

This is what I came up with, just a few dollars over.

+1 to this. I have the same processor except I bought this motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130237&Tpk=msi 785gtm-e45

It works very well and has been 100% stable. This board also took my x2 240 to 3.71ghz stable with stock volts. I use 3.5ghz for daily use though.

Hmm I'll probably go with that motherboard then, it's $10 cheaper. :)

Not that good for the money.

Since gaming isn't that important, drop the video card, the CPU, and mobo and swap them out for this instead:
$200 - AMD Phenom II X3 720 CPU + Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H AM3 AMD 785G HDMI mATX mobo

Only $14 more but gives you a substantial increase in CPU power that'll be far more useful for your usage scenario

Once you factor in shipping, this better cooling case is actually $5 to $8 cheaper than that poorly cooled Rosewill case:
$40 - Cooler Master Elite 335 RC-335-KKN1-GP ATX Case

You do not need a 650W PSU for this setup. You can drop down to the Corsair 400CX and still have enough power:
$50 - Corsair 400CX 400W PSU

Keep the RAM and hard drive. Oh and the AMD equivalent of the 9800GTX+ is the HD4770 and HD4850. If you still have some cash leftover after making the above changes and want to up your gaming capability, you can get this decent card:
