Custom Dell Case (Completed!)

Really like the work. Simple, not too flashy and practical. Made use of a crusty Dell case, that is more of a task than most modders would take. I have done it, but the results weren't as good as this.

I give it 5 out of 5 Dremel's.

LOL well thanks but I can't really say that I modded a Dell case... I basically scrapped the Dell case for the mobo tray and built a new case around it. More of a scratch build than a mod job.

Mysterae give me a pic of your girlfriend; I'll see what I can do :p

Since I havn't given any pics of the system actually turned on I figured I'd do so....... now

The backlit E turned out real nice IMO... it looks really blue in the pics but in RL it is more like white with a blue tinge to it :D. I was thinking a blue cold cathode tube inside the grill where the intake fan is would be the icing on the cake. I had a 4" one to fit in there but didn't have the patience to get it to fit with all it's bulky wires in my already cramped case. Maybe I will do that in the future....

Oh and I made the front page of TechIMO (if you want to see it you might need to scroll down a bit), that was kind of cool

Thanks Qtip, it means alot coming from you :D

Does anyone think I should be worried about using a company's logo? I mean Dell wont come after me will they... it's not like I asked permission :p.

As long as you dont sell the item. For personal use you are fine, they can't sue you for cutting their name out in metal and using it on your own case. Think about all the other cases that have been made.. The Custom AMD Case done in Acrylic shaped like AMD. I highly HIGHLY doubt that guy got permission, because knowing AMD, or any corporation, they want compensation for it.

So you are fine. If you get any hassle let me know. I'll go down and leave a present for em :) LOL I live down the road from De(worthless punks here)ll.

Only people I know that builds a baseball field and charges you 5 bucks a freakin hotdog! and the damn baseball games are AAA and boring as hell!

Very true, but it's still a nice transformation!

And no chance of a pic, we have all seen what you do with a dremel! :p

awesome work, lucky brother!

what i like the most is that you made your own sff case and the backlight logo.

this mod is great, i love how it turned out! very good job

one thing im confused about: how do you get the CD drive to open? i tried looking back through the log, but i couldnt find out where you mentioned what you actually ended up doing

Looks great! I followed this from the start. But please don't tell me it has a Dell BIOS!
And one question, What is your service tag number? haha!

Page 7 shows how it opens.. he put a piece of form/weather stripping on the open button... which when you press the case where the button is, it open and closes, pretty cool.

Nice to see it finished. Good job on the logo as well. The whole thing looks great together.
Props!

one thing i noticed is that the dvd drive cover doesn't match the rest of the front.
Well the plate is sanded aluminum and is supposed to match the rest of the sanded aluminum. If I had put on the two other pieces for the front it would have made more sense. I was thinking of painting it black, but decided that the contrast would look better

Nope I changed the motherboard so it's an old crappy Pheonix BIOS instead lol :p. But yes much better than the complete piece of crap Dell BIOS. The OS is still Dell's version of Windows XP so you still see the Dell branding in random places.

I ended up just sanding the button down a bit... just enough so when I have the front panel on you can just press a spot on the front to get the drive open. The only down side to this is that the panel will now get smudge marks and fingerprints

Thank you everyone for your interest and praise! I have one more set of final pics coming up

CONCLUSION

With this being my first full mod I'm quite pleased but there is ALWAYS room for improvement. There were so many things that I could have done better and/or done differently. The design in itself is flawed for one... having the drives attatched to the top makes it incredible difficult to get inside and service. But modding is definitely something you can only get better at over time and through experience.

Anyways here are some pics I took for wallpaper choices

Sadly my brother has no desk to put this case on :(. So we had to rig up a place for him in a the den on a night stand... It actually works quite well

happykev1.jpg

Look how happy he is lol... next project should be another desk project for him

I'm letting him borrow my 17" CRT and my old Phillips sound system... I just went and got an RCA splitter from Radio Shack that lets me hook it up. It actually sounds awesome! Quake 4 sounds very intimidating :D.

Well thank you all for being a part of my first worklog... It was quite fun and really want to start another one. It's kind of sad not having anything to mod. If anyone has any questions or want to see any other pics in higher res or something just let me know...

CHRISTMAS UPDATE

Well my brother got some xmas goodies from his parents (with my help on picking them out ;)) and now his setup is a little more worthy of the PC case lol

New Samsung 20'' WSXGA and new Saitek keyboard.... much better than that old CRT and 20 year old piss yellow board

This isn't exactly how it is setup all the time cause I'm not at his house.... when I get over there I will take a few more pics of the new desk he also got for it. It's a much nicer and cooler looking desk ;)

He may also get a 7600GT to replace the Radeon 9550... that would complete the package :D

wooh! The entire set up altogether is even better! Awesome how everything just matches.

Nice work. You should market that case to Dell. That blows away anything Dell has, specially the XPS line.

GG man that is some talent. And all this for your bro. Very nice, I'd be giving this a 10/10.
