Hello. I have been browsing this section for over a week now but just had a few questions I could not find answers to or a FAQ section.

I see a lot of people using a receiver connected directly to their computers with stereo speakers. I'm not new to running computer audio to a stereo receiver but having a receiver dedicated to just your computer audio is new to me.

Is thier anything specific you guys look for in this setup? I know for most brand is an important factor and so is the speakers in use. I plan to upgrade my small HT setup and starting to think about using my to-be retired Pioneer receiver with some M-audio speakers using the toslink just for my computer.

If anyone could go into further details on why they chose this setup I would be interested to learn more.

Mostly b/c getting the signal outside of the pc equals less noise and improved sound quality. Also, a receiver and passive speakers almost always beats any "pc speaker" setup.

I've had my computer hooked up to some kind of amp and speakers since the Amiga 500. It's just better.

I used to use a receiver but now use Alexis studio monitors. I am also just using the onboard realtek sound and it sounds excellent.
my brother and I just purchased an m-audio av40 monitor setup for my father for his birthday last weekend to replace a receiver setup.
earlier this year my brother did the same, replacing a receiver with a pair of m-audio Bx5a monitors.

It's a more flexible setup, not necessarily better... If you're gonna be investing a lot in your sound system OR you already have an old receiver then it's certainly a wise choice, otherwise it just depends on whether you favor flexibility or space saving.

You can certainly get some powered monitors like the ones mentioned above and achieve similar results, tho it won't necessarily be cheaper (nor costlier) than a discrete receiver, and I'd still pair most of those powered sets with a sound card or external DAC. I'm pretty happy with mine, glad I went that route too since my new Eyefinity setup has absolutely taken over my desk. :p (speakers are now horizontal under the displays, not quite at ear level but at least they'really not directly on the desk)
