Does anyone know where the config file is for CS: Source? I can't seem to find it. I have a few commands that help my frames like turning off ragdoll etc... that I'm tired of having to type that in everytime I start the game. Any suggestions?

First off, how are you having issues running CSS with an 8800:confused: Is that even possible?

Second, I did a quick Google aaand:

Steam\SteamApps\your@email.com\counter-strike source\cstrike\cfg

That or you could always just bind it to some keys so laung the game and tap []\=- to switch your settings.

No need to thread crap here...

I recently installed Windows 7 which dropped my frames. I want a solid frame rate of around 100... and if I don't put in my standard stuff like cl_ragdoll blah blah 0 and fps max of 100 or something like that, then my frames jump all over the place. I'm not knowledgeable on graphic settings, so I don't know what's going on.

Also, I did do a search for the config file after googling. I put the changes in that config file and it still doesn't stick...

Does anyone else have any helpful ideas rather than just railing someone who just got back into gaming after 3 or so many years?

In this folder there's already a file called config.cfg. That's the settings the game saves when you make changes through the options menus.

You'll need to create a new file called autoexec.cfg and put your custom settings in there. The game will load this file automatically and won't change it around. See if that helps.

Soujiro - thanks... that's exactly what i was looking for!

Fantasysage - frames that aren't jumping around = better reg, right? or am i just porting over my old cod knowledge into a game where that doesn't matter?

I really don't think you are going to notice anything over 60 man. Between input lag, ping, and human reaction speed, that just won't make a difference.

in call of duty, if you have a constant framerate, then your bullets go where they are supposed to. if your frames are jumping around and spiking all over the place, then no telling where your shots are going.... plus in cod, you can jump to certain areas if you are capped at say 125 fps or 333 fps (just as an example). i think that is a product of the quake engine. i don't know how it is in counter strike.

CS:S (like many other games on the source engine) is horrible CPU dependent. In many cases upgrading your GPU doesn't improve your FPS, as for most people their CPU will be the bottleneck in that game.

Secondly, the minimum requirements for cs:s on the steam website is outdated. Those are the minimum specs needed for the game on the release date - the CPU power needed for the game since then has quadrupled. When CS:S was released a P4 2Ghz was fine, then 8 months later you needed a P4 3Ghz to be fine, then another 6 months later you needed a A64 to be fine, now today you need a Core2Duo to be fine.

"fps_max 101" is a common setting for CS1.6, and a necessary setting for competitive play. The reason being in those old engines FPS variations affected gameplay negatively (unlike engines today which are modularly coded). So when other versions of CS (like CZ, CS:S, CS:promod etc) get released - most people stuck with the settings they used for the past decade because they like it that way.
