Crysis

You get used to the graphics. Then you go play COD4 again and realize how great the Crysis graphics are ...

I've tried to get into it 2 or 3 times now, and haven't even made it as far as the spaceship without getting bored yet.

It's odd, because the gameplay is actually quite good and it's very pretty to look at and I even managed to slog through Far Cry SP, but it's just not engaging to me for some reason.

I think maybe my problem is just that my taste in gaming is starting to change quite a bit as I get older and more boring.

So true. I was without a good gaming system for two years and missed out on a lot of games. When I finally got my present set-up,I started trying to catch up with the games I missed, but I made the mistake of starting with Crysis. Graphically, none of the games I played afterward, old or new, could compare.

Yeah, I kinda felt the same with Crysis. Other than a few "wow" moments I always felt detached from Crysis despite my head telling me that I should be impressed. :p

I note quite a few comments along this line using words like - boring - slow pacing - etc. Well, everyones taste is, of course, different and some, perhaps many, will always feel this way about Crysis.

I very well may be older than you enlightenedby42. I'm certainly more boring. Anyway, here are a few thoughts of mine about what keeps bringing me back to Crysis; offered only on the remote chance you haven't already been there, done that.

I think this one may seem a little dry because it's such a sandbox of ways to play through it. You can go complete stealth to take out a base one guy at a time or take a truck, drive it through the camp, jump out and shoot the gas tank to have it kill several people at once, go strength mode and do max carnage, etc.

QFT. At first it's fun to experiment with the suit and try all of these. But it quickly becomes boring. For me, the replay value is in the difficulty setting. Crank it up until only one of these method's is even remotely possible - complete stealth, augmented by instant control and use of the suits other capabilities when the bullets are flying. Crank it up until stumbling into, or intentionally wading right into, any group of bad guys results in your destruction every time. Then try to get from beginning to the alien ship without dying once. If you beat that challenge, and if you find yourself enjoying Crysis when played this way, you can just crank the difficulty up another notch.

Now, as for the games pacing I see it this way. Played the way I've suggested Crysis is a refreshing change of pace from your standard, mindless, "run & gun" shooter. I enjoy those also but they don't repeatedly draw me back for more. The game play possibilities in Crysis, (especially the suit), are many and varied and in some instances unique in my experience. At high difficulty levels they challenge me to make use of them. To try to be clever and cunning. (I like the CoD series but when did any one of those ever challenge anyone to be clever or cunning?) Crysis like that is often "slow paced" but never boring. In fact, played this way it can still keep me on the edge of my seat as I try to sneak up on just one bad guy or sneak past a group of them or try to pull off some other brainstorm I've had.
As an aside, moving through the world of Crysis at a slow pace is always enjoyable for me as it offers the chance to occasionally just stop and look around. Amazing stuff those graphics and the realistic sounds of nature. (Try turning the music off then stand in the forest and just listen).
Crysis, I think, isn't at it's best when run through at a frenetic pace. It offers many ways to try to be inventive. One needs to take ones time.

YMMV

QFT.. it always takes me a long time to finish games because i like to walk around and look at shit. This game allows me to do that, i played the game on my projector, it felt a lot more real than other games because there wasn't someone telling me were to go or what to do

I think the replayability is the best part of Crysis. Play once through with run and gun, then once through with stealth. There are so many different ways to play that I feel that it is always fun to pick up and play a few levels every now and again.

I still have to play Crysis, I never bought it.
I want the Maximum edition but it never goes on sale :(

Like a few others, I never was able to get into it. I've tried a few times now and I've never even made it to the alien ship before I was bored out of my mind. I probably put 2 hours into Warhead before experiencing the same issue. I actually found FarCry 2 to be more entertaining but I probably only put 6ish hours into it.

I think the last FPS I really enjoyed was Thief 2 though. :(

I loved it. Easily makes one of my top 5 favorite games. The only thing in my mind that kept it from being perfect was the zero g level.

Right on bencorn. I think Crytek deserves a lot more credit than they get for this masterpiece. Here is an idea for a run through to the alien ship you may not have thought of. If you have the least bit of "sneaky bastard" in your genes give it a whirl.

Warning - - impatient "run and gun" fanatics need read no further.

Ok bencorn, the rules for this are as follows:

1. Premise is that this is a COVERT OP. You are to get to the alien mountain while drawing the least attention to your presence possible.

2. Set the game difficulty level to the easiest possible.

3. At the very start when you get to the beach drop your pistol and fire all the ammo for the SCAR into the ground. This leaves you with only one thing that will shoot, the tactical attachment on the SCAR. From this point on you can never pick up any weapon or ammo except to aquire a scope.

4. You are going to go all the way through without firing a shot from anything except the tactical attachment. This means the only way to ever kill a bad guy is a melee attack. You can silently dart them from a distance, rendering them unconscious for a minute or so then walk up and butt stroke them to death or just leave them and go on.

Thats it. Your goal is to get to the alien mountain alive and, as much as is possible, unseen. Think you could be, or, depending on your age, could have been, a competent military sniper? Here's your chance to find out. I guarantee many hours of adrenalin pumping, white knuckled tension if you give it a serious try - But - you must be willing to give it the time needed for it will require cautious slow going.

If you do try it I'd appreciate any feedback on how much you enjoyed it.

Just for grins I once tried this as a very non-serious approach:

Premise: NOMAD is a lazy fellow who has the attitude - "why walk when you can ride"!

Tried to get through by driving vehicles whenever possible. What a disaster. On easiest setting I died so much I finally gave up. But it was a real hoot. I particularly enjoy this approach after having consumed a few adult beverages. Lack of reflexes and coordination causing peals of laughter to emanate from nearby friends.

Enjoy

Problem I had is that after I've done it once I really have no motivation to do it again in a slightly different way, so Crysis had very little replayability to me (especially since multiplayer sucked balls).

After I've walked in an pwned a bunch of Koreans and got the objective, I dont think "wow I wonder if I had of walked in slightly slower from the other side what would have happened". To me, it just feels like re-pwning the same Koreans opposed to an interesting experience. Sure you can sneak in, or storm in, or ride in on a vehicle, or just avoid it and move on to the next bit. By the end of the 2nd level I'd tried each of those methods of killing Koreans, so I didn't really feel motivated to go back and try them in a different order. "Maybe if a sneak into the first camp and storm the 2nd camp instead of sneaking into the 2nd camp and storming the 1st!". To me its not replayability.

The only "attack" I felt like retrying another time to see how it'd go was the Assault mission (I think that's what it was called) when you sunk the ship. Because the first time I went out to a little island in the middle, and long range missiled all the objectives, but that meant I didn't even see most the map. So I played it again and flanked around instead to see the other part of the map that I missed.

Indeed ;)

I guess what one person sees as awesome replayability others may see as beating the same dead horse this time with a piece of 2 x 4 instead of the cricket bat you used previously :p

I keep a Warhead icon amongst my games for those moments I want to vent.
As said there are so many ways to achieve the missions, and its always adrenalin pumped.
Fantastic game.

Going through Delta difficulty without using cloak and dodging bases is also an enjoyable "challenge." Not hard, unless you limit yourself to autosaves only. I lost count how many times I died before clearing a level.

This is actually pretty fun and very possible on Delta. IIRC, the only required kills are the four nanos at the graveyard and tac/fist is the easiest way of killing them. Otherwise, gas cans and vehicles make wonderful weapons. :)

Modding a one second cooldown on stealth would make things interesting, or no stealth at all like Yoshiyuki Blade mentioned--that can get tough with choppers.

I think what turned me off when I tried it back when it came out, was the fact that baddies need many bullets in order to die.
I remember shooting in bursts, after flanking an enemy, hitting him 5 times plus, and have him still shooting back at me...
That kinda turned me off, and I didn't think the "suit powers" were fun so...that's why I stopped playing it after maybe 2 hours...
I'm thinking of trying it again, but am afraid that the experience will just be the same :(

Yep, headshots can drop a guy at pretty much any distance. Even an assault rifle (SCAR or FY71) with a silencer and sniper scope can work.

why do people rate how good a game is by being able to play it more than once... If they game is good the first time, it's a good game, regardless if you are able to play it another 10 times...

When you spend 20 bucks for a lap dance at a strip joint, as long as it was good, you got your monies worth. It doesn't matter if she says bye to you at the end of the night!

IMO its a good way to test your opinion of the game. Say for example, I played a game and thought it was good. And then sometime down the line, I replay it, but it refreshes my memory on all the boring/unintuitive/lame parts of the game that I had to drudge through to get to the end, leaving me unmotivated to keep going. That can really influence what I originally thought of the game as a whole.

Notice how a lot of people loved to replay everything up to Space Mountain where they dreaded going through it again. That strengthens their overall opinion of the game. Also, on the flipside, someone could replay the game and appreciate things that they haven't noticed or cared for in the past. It's good to keep your memory refreshed.

Games that give you a "WOW" factor (fast pace, a sense of ugency, chaos, etc.) usually end up bland or boring the second time around, in my experience. These are the games that I don't think are really great overall if they don't engage me anywhere near as well as the first time.

I tend to buy slightly older games, and frequently think of them as equivalent to movies as far as entertainment dollars. If I can get a couple of hours or more for every 10 bucks, I feel I've gotten my money's worth. Crysis easily passes that test for me.

I reinstalled Crysis with the intent of playing it through on my new (2nd hand) video card a few days ago and only got through the first 2 missions before I got bored and gave up. It also reinforced my opinion of the graphics being "good but not great" simply becaue everything is so unpolished. The SSAO gives everything a grainy look, the sun rays are cool but done to death, things pop in noticably even with draw distances cranked up, the vegetation swaying often makes things shimmer strangely, texture quality is inconsistent (some things look awesome, others just average, which makes the average things stand out more), performance is inconsistent (I tuned the graphics to be about 40+fps, but there were pronounced and noticable drops below that).

Honestly I prefer the graphics of a game which is simpler, better polished and more consistent performance. Though I understand the need for games which push the limits of the tech, in the case of Crysis I feel it pushes the limits of the tech without bundling it into a nicely presented package.

Hey guys, I re-installed Crysis after a rebuild on an I7 using Win7 64 bit... I can't make it out of the main menu before crashing. Sounds like some of you are probably running on current hardware or OS... I installed all the patches, 1.1, 1.2 and 1.2.1

Any advice?

What video card do you have? I had issues with the later 9.x drivers from ati but the earlier ones worked good.

I tried playing crysis when it was released and I couldn't get it to run/look very well on my hardware at the time.

Just tried playing again and while it looks nice fully maxed, im not sure what combination of settings will actually give me good enough performance.

More importantly the game just isn't compelling at all story-wise. I am guessing that it doesn't get much better past the first few hours?

I'm halfway through a new I7 920/5850 build from my old P4/3850 in sig, and I can't wait to give crysis another whirl. It was a grreat game for me with tons of options.

I'm on an I7 920, with a 4850, and I've got it fully maxed out at 4800x1200 with very playable FPS. It's one of the better looking games I've seen in eyefinity.

4850? I didnt know it can do EYEFINITY

Sorry...had to. ;)

Enjoyed Warhead running on GTX 260 Ultra settings with mod config, Delta is more exciting to play and adds more dept.

Crytek just needs to learn to make a game that's like the first half of Far Cry and Crysis without any damned aliens or monsters.

And oddly enough, (different) devs took this fact into account when they developed...

Far Cry 2

(I shit you not...)

I still think FC2 rocks...

I can't tell you how much (or even more, for some of you...) it would have sucked ass though if when you get to the 2nd half of the game on the new map, some mutant ninja f-ing aliens showed up!

Crytek needs to consider how lame FC2 with aliens would have been when they consider their next game...

Dude I don't know what you're talking about. I would have KILLED for some aliens, or Nazi's from the past, or Zombie Hitler, ANYTHING, in FC2. FC2 was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring. Clear one guard post, you've cleared 'em all...except that they respawn when you get 100 feet away, so, clear one guard post, go clear it again? :/

that alien mothership was a pain in the ass the first few times I played the game...almost no sense of direction inside that ship...hard to know which way to go as well as I could never tell if I already visited a certain area or not...plus running the game when it first came out on an 8800GT didn't help either...finding the little vent to finally escape that ship was a big relief

why do so many people hate the alians?...I thought they were pretty cool...reminded me of the squid aliens from the Matrix...

Yeah, the re-spawning was quite something, wasn't it? I didn't realize just how bad it was 'til I kept clearing a post thinking I needed to have them gone to fly to get a diamond. They kept shooting me back down, though. I needed to go to the right of some tree for them to not see me, instead of left of the tree and be shot down.

But they'd re-spawn by me just running back 'round some hill... I had just walked away mere seconds ago...

Or, maybe best put, they'd re-spewn... :D

Otherwise, I honestly though FC2 was epic... I must not play enough games to know good games from bad...

I have 300 games in my Steam acct... Suggest me one! Still haven't played Bioshock or Mass Effect or Batman:AA... Think I'm going to wait as I'm just about to buy an i7 system... (Even Doom3 was cpu-bottlenecked on my E7400 before OCing to 3.8...)

(At least my 5870 is now stable on 10.2s...)
