Crysis Warhead performance WORSE!?

Shader on mainstream? Isn't shader one of the biggest difference maker in terms of visual fidelity?

The shader setting makes a bigger difference in fidelity than any other setting, but it is also the most costly in terms of performance. Shaders is where the bottleneck is. It gives that extra layer of paint that make this game so real looking, but that is just beyond the capacity of the 8800 series cards and probably taxes the GTX280 as well. So even though this is the one setting we want to crank up the most, it is going to take the game out of the playability zone for a lot of people.

Rather than keeping the shaders high and everything else lower, do it in reverse--keep shaders low and everything else high, especially objects, and you'll get a better overall presentation on older cards.

I found Warhead to run much better than Crysis did. I was able to turn more things up to high and even run some AA at my native resolution 16xx x 1050.

I wonder whats killing some of the others who are having issues.

Something else I dont think I have read in this thread that supports the better optimisation is your card temps. My temps dropped 25c running this game. All three of my 280's hit 75-80c on Crysis and they barely break 50-60c running Warhead. How is everyone elses temps?

This game was barely playable until the first frozen scene, then all went into the crapper. We're talking 4 FPS.

I run alot of settings on Gamer, few on Enthusiast and it's crushing my system.

Anyone else being killed by the ice scenes. So much worse than the original.

What resolution? Are you using an SLI profile? I find that hard to believe if you're at 1680x1050 with SLI'd 8800GT's when I'm using an 8800m GTS (around a 9600GT speed apparently) at 1440x900 with all Gamer settings and the ice level runs perfectly fine for me.

Same here, my single 8800GT is coping well at 1280 x 1024 on Gamer with 2x AA.

God I need a 1680x1050 monitor!

I'm seeing the same thing under dx10. dx9 is infinitely more playable.

Runs fine on mine...

Q6600 @ 3.0Ghz, 4850 very slightly OC'd and 4Gb Ram.

This at 1440x900 w/ "Gamer" for everything and 2x AA.

I haven't tried increasing, or reducing the settings at all yet.

Yes, DX9 mode is much smoother than DX10. Same applied to the original Crysis too. I can't see much difference in quality between the two, I must be uneducated in that I don't know what I'm looking for.

As I am reading some threads over at inCrysis I found this thread:

http://www.incrysis.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=24345

The guy is talking about a bug that was also on the original game. Object detail does not automatically change when clicking turn all setting to. I decided to set everything to enthusiast (motion blurr off) and OD to gamer and guess what it worked for me!!!!!!!!

I was still playing in the snow level and I did not take an FPS hit. Went under the facility and mine shafts and still was working for me. I did drop fps and encountered some lag when I hit the train level, but was still playable. I couldn't believe this worked for me. Worth checking out guys!!!!!!

I've been using this custom config (erased the sound and shadow options though as I have those set to enthusiast) and am now not only getting 10fps average more at 1920x1080 but also getting close to DX10 image quality.

I'm running a 9800GX2 and the game was really choppy in DX10 at any resolution and detail setting higher than Mainstream. Running in DX9 helped a little but it wasn't silky smooth at all. I updated to the latest WHQL drivers from Nvidia 178.13 and in DX9 things are a lot smoother, almost silky smooth running Enthusiast settings at 1920x1200 no AA, VSync On. I haven't had a chance to try DX10 with the new drivers.

So i finally got back my 4870x2 which was RMA'd and crysis runs much better. On 1920x1200 with 2x AA and the highest setttings I was pulling about 25-30fps constant. So far so good. 8.9 drivers. DX10

I got my GTX 280 OC working, my original one having been faulty.

I played Warhead a bit more, then said 'Fuck it, visuals or not, this is a tedious game' and played Trackmania, Clear Sky and CoD4 - for the first time in six months - instead.

Aw man, trackmania owns so bad. More tedious by far than Crysis, Warhead, but a phenomenal game.

On my 8800GTS (G92) SLI setup I am still getting a serious drop between DX9 Enthusiast and DX10 Enthusiast running at 1280x1024 (19" LCD limited). I'm going from 44FPS average to 7FPS on the ICE Levels and that just doesn't seem right for some reason. Like you I'm using the 178.13 drivers.

Just upgraded to a 22" LCD and the game still runs very smoothly at 1680x1050 with all Gamer settings and no AA. Not bad for a 8800GT. Going back to play Crysis proves that Warhead 'feels' smoother.

Gaming at 1920x1200 all on Enthusiast DX10 at a silky smooth 35 fps avg... never dipping below 20 fps

DX9 gives a few more fps, but also somehow feels choppier

I am gaming at 1920 x 1200 as well in Enthusiast and I was getting playable fps. Using fraps I measured it and there was a dip below 20 fps in a couple of spots. Then I tried the incrysis mod cvars tweak for the game and immediately I got a min of 8 fps boost and now it never drops below 25 fps. Some areas I am getting silky smooth framerates as well. This is with a relatively old video card setup too :) Quite happy. I am going to try and tweak some shader and texture settings to see if I can get the quality even higher or try and see if I can enable some AA or something because the game is pretty aliased.

I am looking to get a 280 sli setup and this justifies it http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-280-sli-triple-review-test/5

I have used both regular and custom configs. I also have custom Ice level for warhead. In general, I can run on enthusiast with 30-50 fps average; sometimes it drops to 20s though @ 1680x1050.
As far as Ice Level goes, I would say that I get somewhere around 30. I may try another config listed here.

A bit of a thread resurrect here, however I just got Warhead a couple days ago.

My framerate is lot less consistent than it was in the original. I could play the original at around 27fps average consistently all on high at 1680x1050. Warhead fluctuates from 20 to 40 depending on whats going on, makes the game a lot more choppy.

my.02 USD.
