Oh and just to clarify i meant 3 seperate purchased copies of the game, not 3 pirate rip offs :p

I wonder who the first game company and game will come out with a Trent Reznor / Radiohead business plan to give away their game for free and have users pay whatever they feel like paying for it.
 
Just thought I'd chime in on this thread - having very similar issues.

Clean disk, had these problems since I first bought the game - usually drive makes horrible noises when reading the disk, sometimes the read fails. Sometimes it acts like it works, but then when launching the game I get 'Please insert the orginal disk'.

If I leave the disk in my drive and reboot, my PC hangs at the POST screen for almost 2 minutes before moving on.

Really annoying,
 
What kind of drive do you have Standpoint? It'll probably be fixed by the same thing ... a firmware update.
 
Had this issue too, turns out it's something to do with Securrom and sata drives. Can't get the firmware loader for my Lite-On to work under Vista, but I installed it over my network drive, and then found out that after about 5 mins the disc simply reads.

Still a big WTF tho.
 
Another same here and my DVD drive is Samsung SATA too. Game installed and ran fine though. On the box they always say CP may not work with your drive so they are trying to cover their asses from a class action lawsuit. Like we are supposed to know what drives it will work with or not and then the stores refuse to refund your money if it won't work with your drive. That really smacks of class action lawsuit, IMO.
 
It's definitely a SecureROM "bug" if you choose to view it that way. The newest version of SecureROM is obviously not liked very well by some DVD readers. My understanding is that SecureROM uses bad/unreadable sectors as part of it's anti-piracy scheme, and it would appear that some DVD readers choke hard on those sectors when they try to read them. Thus, the disc spins up/down as the drive attempts to re-read the bad sectors.

The newer firmwares fix this by somehow recognizing the pattern that SecureROM uses and thus allows the disc to be successfully read. I recall when SecureROM first came out, some CD readers had the exact same issue, and sure enough a firmware update fixed those problems too.

Is it unreasonable for a software maker to place the onus of updating firmwares on the manufacturers and end-users? Absolutely. Can anything be done about it? I highly doubt it; the dark shroud known as the DMCA in combination with any other anti-piracy laws have completely blacked out any sense of hope that the legitimate users will ever have an easy road to fair use.

Lawmakers and content producers will never back down from the idea that making "use" more difficult will in turn eliminate piracy. I highly expect things to get so bad that we'll see a day where we'll no longer be able to access media without proprietary equipment from each content provider; maybe something like the other Commodore resistor keys we had to plug in to play games. Each movie, game, or CD will have it's own individual key and all media readers will require the presence of that physical key before it will access the media. Won't that be lovely?
 
Same issue here. I bought Crysis today and my Lite-On makes clicking sounds for several seconds until the disc loads.

My PC is only a month old so I doubt there is new firmware for my drive.

I was about to return the disc when I found this thread.
 
It seems to be a general consensus that it both Securerom & the disc used for Crysis.

I went with ASUS DVD DRW-2014L1T burner to avoid this issue and had to install a NO-DVD patch.
I had no intention of buying or d/l a pirated version of the game. But this newer games tend to persecute legitimate buyers than the pirates themselves.

Why should my equipment fail because publishers thinks and treat each and every single one of us legitimate gamers as pirates.

I buy your game and you get to ruin my equipment? I think not.
Now I'm glad there are ppl out there making these no-dvd patches.

I didn't support this ppl then, but now I do.
 
Great... Now I do not want to play the game. The game has been a pain since I installed it now this. I would rather not play Crysis than kill my drive.

Maybe Best Buy will return it.
 
Yea, a firmware update may fix my problem, but I am using a very old DVD drive, don't even know the model offhand. If there is a firmware update, its also probably a few years old. I'll probably just buy a new drive soon.

BTW - Im positive the problem is with secureROM.
 
Best Buy refused to return it and they exchanged it for another copy. They then proceeded to open the new copy I returned it for so there was not chance of me returning the return.

My Lite-On drive has no new firmware and EA is worthless.

Does anyone know if the clicking will destory my drive? I can live with the clicking, but cannot live with the fact that it is going to ruin my drive....
 
Not sure if the question has already been answered, but it's an issue with SecuROM, Crysis' DRM. Check your drive manufacturer for a firmware update, as most of them should have one that will resolve your problem.
 
Updated the firmware on my ite On DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Burner with LightScribe Labeling Technology, Model DH-20A4H. DId not fix the crazy clicking. The firmware was dated June 2008. I should just see if the disc kills my drive. If it does then I will have it replaced under warranty.

Lame, but I do not want to buy a second drive to play Crysis in a machine I just spent $2,600 on.
 
yeah i know my crysis disk clicks too and i did the firmware updates and everything. I have that really popular samsung drive it dont know the model number off the top of my head but yeah thats what i have and that didnt fix the clicking so idk what will. but i do know that it wont mess up the drive. its just annoying. i may just mount the disk to a virtual drive using daemon tools to just end this problem.

Will Daemon tools work? I should download that. I e-mailed Lite-On and EA. Probably a waste of time, but worth a shot.
