Where is a good place to get CRT's for a good price, i'm looking for hopefully a 21" flat screen CRT, but if worse comes to worse i'll get a flat 19" CRT. Thanks

A lot of people are ditching their old CRT's for LCD's, and so you can probably go on ebay or your local craigslist and pick a 21" up for under $100. Thats if you don't mind getting a used monitor but often times you can get a higher model such as a trinitron and those still cost $$$ new.

Yeah, they are "ditching" their CRTs for another technology that gives you a fixed resolution, retinal burning brightness, gray blacks, dead pixels, backlighting, and motion blur/ghosting. Good gawd, who wouldn't "ditch" their CRT for all that goodness. Lemmings!!!!! LOL! :p

*raises hand* i wouldnt go back to CRTs. i love my LCD. small and bright and vibrant. works great in games for me. :)

im trying to sell my NEC 22" FE2111sb since my parents wont let me keep it since i failed math again. let me know if your interested.

Thanks for the input but i'm looking to spend less than $200 after shipping.

bah...you are not going to find good "new" 21/22" flat CRT with 200$ ...i payed like 550 euros of my 22" flat diamontron...like half a year ago

yea, ditching a power hungry, heat-making, bulky, blurry, geometrically incorrect, heavy, glarry, flickering CRT sounds like a horrible idea. the guy was just making a suggestion and if you have unbiased info you can offer, then by all means help him out cause that's what posting here should be about.

Stu55, I'd say stick to a 19" CRT. it'll easily be the best bang for the buck. I had a 19" Samsung 997DF and didn't really enjoy it, but NEC's are really good and not that much more.

My NEC FE2111 doesn't flicker, it isn't glarry (too ironic, given the retinal burning brightness of big screen LCDs), and it *is* geometrically perfect. Yes, it is heavy. And maybe you like to take your CRT (when you owned one) for walks around the block, but, believe it or not, when I sit my CRT on my desktop, there it stays. Unbelieveable but true. It does make more heat than an LCD and it does use *slightly* more power (132W v. 90W for the 2001fp). If that is your reason for selecting a monitor that is fixed in resolution, cannot keep up with fast games, is susceptible to backlighting and pixel failure, is susceptible to interpolation artifacts at lower resolution, cannot display true black, looks absolutely sh*tty playing Doom3, then I am happy for you. I am the one being unbiased and you're the one with the anti-CRT vacuous talking points. :p

A CRT geometrically perfect? Sure...

crt's fuck up your eyes. lcd's dont. so there

If you look hard you can find good deals on refurbs on ebay. I was hanging around the [H]ot|Deals section and got two black 21" Trinitrons for $240, shipped to my door. They both looked like brand new (even though they weren't). The ebay seller was cosmicdallas or something like that. They work perfectly.

We aren't talking about about the old curved screen CRTs of the past. Mine is flat-surfaced and the test patterns I run through it show no geometric problems. With LCDs you have geometric problems whenever you can't run native resolution. Like newer games which push your hardware to the limit. Me? I just bump down the resolution. You can do the same.....but with geometric distortion and interpolation artifacts. I just love those oval golf balls in TW2005 when you play anything but 1600 lines of resolution. They are way too kewl. :p BTW, I should point out that I owned both a 2001fp and NEC FE2111 simultaneously....and returned the Dell.

No CRT has perfect geometry. That's kind of like saying "my LCD has perfect blacks". Flat faced CRTs always have some problems with curved/warped corners and linearity. Vertical geometric distortions are corectable most of the time but horizontal ones are often a problem. Horizontal lines at the top and bottom of the screen usually bow inwards. Combined with the refractive index of the front glass it makes the screen appear concave although the actual surface is slightly convex. I have a Mitsubishi 930SB and it's good but far from perfect geometry wise.

Sorry but mine has perfect geometry. The geometric test patterns I've DL'd from NECs website provides a number of patterns including edge alignment along the limits of the screen, diagonal lines and circles. Really, you just have to give up the argument cause it just ain't true. Whatever distortions that occurred when I got the monitor are fixable through the various convergence and alignment adjustments you can make. And even if you were to spot a miniscule misalignment you could only see it through test patterns.

Really, I have no problem with LCD in the monitor marketplace. I'm glad so many are buying them 'cause that just means that's more money that can be spent on improving them. What I'll throw back at anyone is this idea that CRTs are crap, yesterday's technology, et. al. That's just shallow, dumb stuff that really shouldn't even deserve a response. History is full of technological innovations that have not improved upon the old technology. Transistors took over from vaccuum tubes in the 50's and CDs from vinyl in the 80's. Today, some of the finest high end audio equipment made uses....you guessed it, vaccuum tube amplification from Conrad Johnson, Audio Research, Quicksilver, etc. and turntables from VPI and Clearaudio, etc. I've owned the stuff.

ok ok, greenwit....to each his own.

Stu55, I think that would be an excellent choice. I never looked at CRTs on ebay but maybe you could find a good 21" refurb within your budget.

Sorry but no CRT has perfect geometry. It's just the way it is. It may be good, it may be even very good but no perfect. That's the point I'm trying to make. In years of expirience of testing and reviewing monitors I've never came across a CRT that is perfect geometry wise and I've tested monitors that are more expensive and just better than the FE2111. It may not be noticeable unless you look for it but the same could be said about backlight leakage on LCDs and that doesn't mean it's perfect.

You are wrong. Mine is perfect. It has been calibrated and tested. The only thing you have said that makes sense (you make no sense arguing about the geometry of my monitor when you haven't seen it) is that it possible to not see geometric defects unless you look for them. If you cannot see a flaw then it doesn't belong in the CRT bashing talking points of LCD fans. Backlighting on the other hand is NOT fixable.....not practically speaking, short of opening up the monitor itself or returning it. I've seen some gawd awful screenies of backlighting in corners from 2005fpw owners that you can't help but notice. Geometry IS fixable.

Alrighty then, my LCD has no backlight issues at all, no blurring whatsoever has perfect blacks and has the same viewing angles as a CRT. Using your logic, you can't say I'm wrong since you haven't seen my monitor :p You can say what you want but no CRT has perfect geometry. That is a fact. I bet your CRT has no damper wires either since you can't see them :p

After sitting on my moms brand new 800$ 19" LCD I will have to say it´s not at all on par with my 22" Diamondtron.

People say it´s easier on your eyes but can´t really tell a difference between those two in that area.

You can game fine on both of them even fast paced fps games however the image quality on the 22" Diamondtron and colours are slightly better. As for geometry the LCD is slightly better but there is such little difference you will only see it if you look at it.

But the brightness and blackness as well as colours and higher resolutions is what makes my 22" diamondtron better really.

That's the only point I was trying to make. Just because you have to look for something to notice it doesn't make it perfect. Same with blurring and backlight issues on LCDs. Many LCDs blur very little and you can see the backlight only if you turn off all the lights in the room and look at the screen at a distance of 5 inches or something. That still doesn't mean they're perfect. None of them are.

Nonsensical argument. People don't return CRTs for adjustable geometry. They do return them for backlighting and blurring (not to mention pixel problems, excessive brightness that compromise color when reduced and one size fits all resolution). Why? Because they are bugged by these things and they cannot fix them! As far as damper wires, I've used an aperature grill at work for 5 years. In fact, I bought nearly the same monitor for my home.

This is too easy, try again. :p

You've never seen someone returning a CRT because of bad geometry? I have to say I have, lots of time. That's besides the point, though. I was not saying geometry problems on CRTs are worse than backlight issues on LCDs. I meant that no LCD has perfect backlight just like no CRT has perfect geometry. If you can see it when you look for it, it's not really perfect now is it? Either way, I'm tired of this kind of discussions. Why does everything have to turn into silly CRT vs LCD wars here? I have both and enjoy in advantages of both technologies and it's funny to see the CRT and LCD fans trying to convince each other that their monitor is superior at everything.

Don't worry Greenwit, we all know you secretly want that 2405FP, well guess what, keep drooling! :p

/me patiently awaits my 2405FP... ;)

But, Roger, you can't fix backlighting. And if you like LCDs, it is so pervasive it is practically a feature. If geometry can't be fixed, then I agree it's a bad monitor. We'll just have to agree to disagree about how pervasive it is.

Regarding the 2405, yes it sounds intriguing. I would like to sit in front of one but I ain't gonna drool like a lap dog over the prospects of owning one. To sit 18 inches in front of a 24 inch monitor sounds more wierd than appealing to me. My first TV was 24 inches and I watched it from across the room. Just remember to wipe the drool off your chin and look out your window now and again. :p

I'm afraid for you guys with the 24 inch LCDs.....if they are as bright as the 2001fp. You got all that surface area and brightness blaring in your face for gawd knows how many hours a day. Your eyes are gonna shrink.....and your irises too. And your brain will begin to rot and ooze out of your ears. That can't be good.

Yeah, poor us, and soon, we'll have to put aluminum foil on our heads... keep me laughing... I'm enjoying this... :D

you guys are getting off track, i never wanted an LCD, i asked where i can get a flat screen CRT. Anyone have anymore sites?

cant beat a good CRT, but i do want my desk back, and am plannin on goin LCD if i can sell oven currently on my desk...

19" NEC FE992 Flatscreen CRT - http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824002280

22" NEC FE2111SB Flatscreen CRT - http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824002040

I have owned the older version of the 19" NEC (FE990) for a little over a year and it works great. I have tried two LCDs up til this point to try and replace my NEC, but have yet to find one that holds up to my gamer demands for the perfect display. Not to say the NEC is perfect, but it is damn good. For $219 you can't really go wrong.

The 2 LCD's I tried out are the Hyundai L90D+ and a Dell 2005FPW. I bought the Hyundai a little over a month ago, it worked well, but I could not get over the fact that the max resolution on the monitor was 1280 X 1024. I play every single game I own at 1600 X 1200, so the dip in resolution killed that monitor for me. I ended up giving it to my mom. She was using an old Dell 15" curved CRT, so the Hyundai was a great upgrade for her.

I bought the Dell 2005FPW a week ago and received it yesterday (Apr 25th). It suffered horribly from backlighting issues and ruined any games with dark scenes in them for me. Other then the backlighting issue, the 2005FPW is a great monitor and I would have kept it. Instead of playing the exchange game with Dell, I decided to just return the monitor and am going to get my money back.

It seems that I cannot find a decent LCD, so I am going to just stick with my NEC CRT until the messiah of LCD's comes out. The Dell 2405FPW is close, but the price is too high for me right now. Maybe I'll give it a whirl once the price drops.

Philips 202P40 I would highly recommend. Philips makes quality products and it has tons of cooling holes which feels comforting for me who plan to use it the next 5 years minimum :)

I have a 19" samsung syncmaster 955DF that I bought from bestbuy for $200.00 and love it. I had a 19" viewsonic that finally died after 6 years. My wife went to bestbuy and came home with a 19" viewsonic LCD and I was excited at 1st....big,thin.ect.(got it home and had 3 dead pixels back for a return)...I am used to a 1024X768 resolution and the LCD wanted to go to 1280X1024 and it looked great..just everything was a lil bit harder to read....then I noticed when viewing webpages the smearing of the text when scrolling up or down....BAH! Then I got concerned and fired up doom3,quake3,counter strike, half life2,and halo...and anything fast moving was smeared....I could not and would NOT live with that....so back to bestbuy it goes and now I have the 19" samsung CRT with 0 problems.

going with what grinchy said, i would stay away from bestbuy. they are way over priced. but, sometimes, u get a good quality product. i would stick to newegg or any other online place. also, don't go with a LCD. they are horrible for gaming, atleast i think.

reason I went with bestbuy...cuz it was a local vendor and if something was wrong same day fix!
