peformace would be ?

Well This answers my Question you can only run 3 GPUs
on a crossfireX board. Only 1 3870x2 crossfireboard......

you can use four GPUs, it just doesn't scale as well.

You could have 2 3870x2s, or 1 3870x2s and 2 regular 3870s.
 
Judging by the initial results, seems like 3 GPUs is the sweet spot in terms of scaling.
