Crossfire X... when?

Anyone know when these drivers will be out?

Also, would I be CPU limited (opteron @ 2.4) with a 3870x2 and a regular 3870 in xfire? If so, are we talking a lot or just some?
 
I might be wrong, however, I believe you must have a cross fire x compatible board first.

If you have a motherboard with 2 PCIe slots, you can utilize CrossfireX by running two 3870 X2's. As for a single chip solutions (i.e. Three 3870 videocards), you would need a board that is crossfire compatible and has the available PCIe slots.

Sorry, needed to clarify. You need a Crossfire compatible board for the two 3870 X2 situation, it doesn't need to be CrossfireX compatible. CrossfireX main selling point from what I understand is tri and quad configurations, so a CrossfireX compatible board would be needed for say three or four 3870's. If you're using 3870X2, since the videocard itself is doing "Crossfire", you can run quad chips on two PCIe slots.

That's wrong, you still need a crossfire compatible motherboard if you want to run crossfirex

However, you can run the built-in crossfire (transparent crossfire) on a single 3870x2 on any motherboard.
 
the guys wondering about running tri-crossfire if no one noticed, and I have no idea if that'l be available at all. Sure would be neat.

Yes, I know. That's why I went back and explained the situation better in my next post.

The 3870 X2 can run on board "Crossfire" because of the PCI Express switch chip located between the two GPU's. So you can technically run "Crossfire" on any motherboard, regardless if it's nVidia, AMD or Intel.
 
crossfire x needs a compatible motherboard, crossfire x referring to running 2 different video cards in the same motherboard
