no good can come of 16/4 cf. abandon it asap. from a previous owner of a asus p5ke who tried 2900xt cf, 3870cf, and 3850 512 cf on that board. i'd love to give you a raving endorsement of p45 8/8 cf with 4870's but i think i may need a bigger psu in that rig.
I run a 975x chipset board with 4850cf and I get excellent frame rates. My board is PCIE 1.1 with one slot 16x the other 8x. Both slots are 8x in dual card configuration though. So I am effectively at PCIE 1.1 8x the same as PCIE 2.0 4x and I am quite .happy with my frames. I got 39fps with my old 8800gts640 in the same spot in cod4 that I now get 91fps in with 4850cf. I get 61fps with a single 4850 in that same spot. I'm pretty sure the game caps out at 91fps anyway so who knows really how much I am getting. Crysis got about 30% increase from single 4850 to CF. All games got a big boost for me except for Tomb Raider Legend which runs worse than it did on my 8800gts but looks a lot better for some reason even though the settings haven't changed. Im pretty happy with CF on this old board for now and am sure that I would be much more so on a modern PCIE 2.0 dual 16x board.
Crossfire on 965P, P35, and P45 boards generally shows a massive loss in performance. If you want to get full performance out of your setup, you'll need to upgrade to an X38 or X48 board. Otherwise, you may as well just sell off the second card, since you'll probably end up seeing higher framerates with a single card in your current PC than with Crossfire.

You might think you got no problems but you need to realize my system:
e7200 @ 3.6ghz
1 8800gts512mb is doing only 3k behind yours. you should be doing a lot better but your 4x bus is holding you back. I suggest trying with a single card to compare your scores and real game FPS.
