Former SLI user

Now I have 2 6970s in Crossfire. Not a bad deal really as I got 2 copies of Dirt 3 for free, sold 1 code for $25, and got a free copy of Deus Ex PC from Amazon.

Anyway, My 11.8 drivers say "enable crossfire" is checked. When I hit identify GPU I get a big "1". Under AMD CrossFireX Diagnostics, I have a box that says "the following information indicates the status of your setup." There is a blank box with scrollbars that are ghosted - since the bars are blank.

Identify GPU gives me a big 1

Now, teh Graphics Overdrive tab DOES in fact let me select 2 different cards. Device Manager shows 2 different AMD Radeon HD 6900 series "working properly."

Batman Arkham Asylum Benchmark at 2560 x 1600 yields low 49 high 62 fps (all options maxed.)

LoTRO , with all options maxed, spinning around fast in city, yields 48-64 fps. At 2560x1600.

Not sure if I have Crossfire or not. Also I am familiar with different SLI modes of interlace/frame and splitting screen - I dont see anything like that here.

Download GPU-Z, look at what it says. It will tell you at the bottom.

So with SLI you had to 'configure it' per game - Crossfire just takes care of itself?

Why in the "AMD CrossFireX Diagnostics" box is the box with the scroll arrows empty - with the title "The following information idicates the status of your setup."

SLI doesn't normally require configuration per game either....

Don't know, but it seems to be normal, mines that way. But on the previous AMD CrossFireX Configuration screen, you should see an "Enable CrossFireX" box that is checked. And when it's not working, that box will probably be gone.

Also the Information, Hardware section tells you too. You'll see a "Primary Adapter" and a "Linked Adapter" when CrossFire is working. If it's not, the second adapter will probably say "Disabled Adapter".
 
I forgot to install my crossfire bridge once and the error letting me know was listed in the crossfire diagnostics.
 
Your crossfire is working fine, that's how it works. In the diagnostics box it'll show something only if you have a problem. With crossfire most profiles are handled by the driver. You can, however make sure to download the latest CAPs (Catalyst Application Profiles) It's a small add on to the driver that gives you profiles for the latest games that weren't included in the driver update.
 
One of my 6970s was throwing garbled pixels. I'm down to a single one - and I tell you, even at 2560x1600 on a Dell u3011, I notice NO different in frame rate in LoTRO or Deus Ex (all options maxed out.) The 6970 that's out of the system did work by itself but even then threw garbled pixels in an hour.

So I'm wondering if I even NEED Crossfire for anything - or perhaps whatever memory bug this defective 6970 has was also effecting Crossfire performance.

Yes the bad card could definitely affect performance. That;s one thing to consider. Also you may not have your CAPs or the Caps you have installed aren't working for LOTro which could happen. Sadly every once in a while they add a new cap that adds for example, adds a profile to improve scaling on Deus Ex H.R. However that same Cap may break crossfire for a older game or 2. When using crossfire I would highly recommend a free program called Radeon Pro. It makes Crossfire sort of like SLi on nvidia in the sense that you can map profile specific image quality effects and force crossfire, you can even get a scaling bar just like on Sli to make sure your crossfire is working. Oh yeah, and it's free to download and use ;)
