We try to avoid talking about political stuff as much as possible but this is just too funny (the installing Linux part).

On further inspection it was determined the intruder had caused a different type of damage -- someone installed the Linux operating system on the office's computers, Grimm told the Advance Sunday night, and in the process wiped the hard drives clean.

Death penalty would be too lenient, I call for lifelong OSX use (way worse than death). Especially if it was Debian! At least the suspect list should be extremely short (I say it was Red Falcon... and not one of the other 2)

two large chunks of cement and some smaller rocks had been hurled through three, 4x8-foot vertical windows

I'm thinking that someone must have had a key. It was the old Villa Marin," Grimm said

...and I'm thinking this guy Grimm for congress isn't too bright. Broken windows? yep, they must have had a key to break in.

Well all you really need is just a linux install disk/usb drive, go to the server, pop it in and reboot and hit enter a bunch of times. It wipes the drive and installs linux.

I am thinking your reading skill is very poor. He was talking about two different incidents.

I see that Grimm took his chance to bring Gabrielle Gifford's name into the spin-cycle.

“in light of [a congresswoman getting shot in the head], we can’t just ignore [someone installing Linux on a computer]”

what a logical, thoughtful connection to draw...

Yeah, getting shot is exactly like someone throwing a brick through the window of an empty office.

He also had to throw the Middle East into it.

No. I read exactly what is written. You are assuming that somebody had to break in to reboot the computers. That is a poor assumption. It doesn't say that they thought somebody broke in to reboot the computers and had entered with a key. It's implied, but only partly. Computers don't shut down themselves, but the way they wrote it it's implied.

Try again. I try to interpret procedures and documents from hundreds of authors for work. You are making false assumptions and accusations. Go insult somebody else.

Earlier in the week, the computers shut down and rebooted themselves in the middle of the night, Grimm said, and though the campaign first believed that was accidental, now they're suspicious, he said.
"I'm thinking that someone must have had a key. It was the old Villa Marin," Grimm said, referring to the former car dealership that is now his headquarters. "The locks have not been changed since it was Villa Marin, so hundreds of people could have keys to that space. We have no idea who. Someone could have made a key. There's a million ways someone could have got a key."

If they had installed Windows ME, it would have required calling out the National Guard and re-instituting firing squad justice. :D

Sounds like whoever is head of security needs to be fired. Since when did ANY company/person/gov agency not change locks when they get a building from somebody else?

How dare they break in and do them a favor by installing a superior and less vulnerable OS!

I had to roll my eyes at Grimm calling this an attack on Democracy. Most of what goes on in Congress is the real attack on Democracy.

QFT

The only crime is breaking the windows and entering... and maybe loosing some data. I normally charge my clients a few hundred to setup a new Linux server. :D

Haha that is kind of funny. They could have been more creative with the headline though.

"Teens smash Windows in Office and install Linux" :D

Well, one guy was asking publicly why can't we open windows in airplanes not so long ago. I think he wants to be a president, no ? In light of that, "not changing the locks" surprise you ?

"This is an attack against a federal campaign office, which is an attack on our democracy as a whole. It's an attack against what we stand for, for free elections,"

What.a.dumbass.

Take a Xanax. This is what backups are for.

Whew, I'm off the hook...Where are you Falcon? In hiding I suppose.

Maybe he's doing them a favor to protect them from viruses. The real crime was what distro? Ubuntu, Debian, maybe RedHat?

Chances are they tried to use a Linux Live CD (or something they thought was a Live CD) to bypass the Windows Login and mount the hard drives for access. Instead they entered the install option.

Uhhh Broken windows was the 2nd incident. After you re-read the article, feel free to google the definition of "irony".

Obviously you never saw the incident or you have no sarcasm alert meter. It's actually a somewhat humerous, Jim Gaffigan-esque response to a dangerous situation his wife had faced well after she was out of danger. All he needed to add was something like "and why don't they serve cake on airplanes? " to make it complete. Of course, if he had mentioned cake folks would want to storm Leavenworth pretty soon. Folks would just lose their heads over his comment in that case.

On full topic, and in the interest of stopping historical Jim Gaffigan/ French Revolution jokes, it astounds me that people are involved enough to be passionate for or against someone or something in the democratic process but so profoundly misunderstand it to the point they demonize and attempt to silence those they disagree with through violence, lies, denegration and intimidation thinking that in a truly democratic society where all are free, only those who agree with them have the right to be heard. I guess all animals were created equal, but some are more equal than others.

1) i am not from USA, don't live in USA and don't vote in USA. So for me your voting is irrelevant (mostly; unless you decide to start bombarding EU :D)
2) in light of his other statements i am sorry, but i can't look at this case as a joke or even sarcasm.

"I'm thinking that someone must have had a key."

Earlier this week... Automatic updates + Windows Update reboot + probably the 0-day IE fix on Friday :D.

This is absolutely a hoax. There was a considerable debunking on Slashdot and Reddit; Basically some aide, who was trying to erase a bunch of "questionable" campaign funding reports, screwed up using a Linux LiveCD and wiped the damn thing. Nobody "broke in and installed linux".

Occam's razor applies.

Windows updates, anyone?

100% agree it was windows updates. I was only quoting it because someone earlier had trouble reading that there were 2 separate and distinct computer events and he was inferring from the article that the window was smashed to gain entry to the building when the inference should have been that the window was vandalism, not source of entry.

Well, I guess your future president is on par with our prime minister. Damn...
