O man I realy don’t know where to start. I have such a big problem and I don’t know if you guys could help me out on it 

It all started when I switched motherboards for a new northwood processor I got yesterday.

The previous setup was this:

Intel Pentium 4 2.8 400mhz
An MSI MS-6526 micro atx mainboard
2x 512mb corsair ddr memory
9800 pro graphics card
Windows xp pro with sp1
An LG CD-RW 52x
A RICOH combo CD-RW with DVD rom
Western digital IDE 200GB hard drive
PCI soundblaster soundcard(the cheap one)

The setup I have now:
Same has above but with a
intel Pentium 4 3.2 northwood
Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000-G motherboard

Ok I will start from the top to buttom.. i have recently read here in this forum that when u change mobo, it is a common practise to re-install the OS again because of chipset incompatibility. My old mobo has a older chipset. Anyways the guide said that there is no need to re install the OS. Instead there are other methods such has using sysprep or running a repair on the OS. Using sysprep is suppose to be faster to use than the other method.

Ok to speed things up a little bit, I used the sysprep program and followed the instruction rite down the bone and when I changed and installed my new mobo with processor, all the problems began to happen. When I first boot up I had to re install some of my drivers but after that I had serious problems. My windows xp kept shutting down on its own, critical errors where happening and I couldn’t even do no last minute backups has it just kept crashing all the time. I would take note on the errors but there too many. Anyways I decided to do the unthinkable. Reformat and partition my HDD  I had lost some of my stuff in the process because the last time I backed up my stuff was just under a week ago!

Anywaz whilst in the process of installing the installation files for xp, it than told me that it cannot find curtain files from my xp pro cd!!! I never had this problem before, I have 2 copies of xp and there not scratched or anything. I managed to resolve this by just pressing enter to try and find the file and continue and it did continue, it did this a couple of times eventually I refomrated and installed xp again, when I installed al the chipset drivers and stuff for my mobo, it crashed and said a windows xp file is missing and cant boot the OS at al!!! I than tried 2 partition and format again and once I entered my cd key 2 begin installing xp, a blue screen comes up like half way through installation, saying thatthere is something wrong with my ntfs.sys file with it saying page_fault_in_nonpaged_area!!!
Im wondering, is my hard drive fucked?? How do I enter ms dos to type a command to fix or find problems with my hard drive?? What is the command 2 do this? By the way I can only use 137gb out of 200gb when I partition and install xp!!!

If you get the system up and running, you'll need Service Pack 1 and probably a BIOS update to use all the available space on that drive. Otherwise you're limited to 137GB.

I would download the drive's diagnostic software from its manufacturer (eg SeaTools from Seagate, PowerMax from Maxtor, Data Lifeguard Diagnostics from Western Digital, etc.) and run it. If you get errors then you need to RMA the drive.

If the drive is okay, download IBM's Zap from here: http://www.microstorage.com/Harddriveinfo.htm and zap your drive; it will zero-fill the first 128 sectors on your drive, IIRC. This is the boot record and partition tables(s). If that drive is the only drive in your system and it is set to Master on your primary channel, then the syntax is zap 0. Then try reinstalling again.
 
ok thanks man i will try thee above. By the way, the zap url that they give me in that website, says that the file doesnt exist anymore, is there any other place to get the zap file, what does it do to my hard drive??? one quick question, when i install sp1 would i have to re install xp or will my hard drive automaticly have 2000gb on my computer??? my bios is ok has it reads the hard drive 200gb??? so it must be the sp1 i have to install.... one more thing, what u mean rma it? how do i do that??anywaz let me go check and see if your theory works, ta ta
 
Zap is hard to find these days. Try the second paragraph on this page here: http://www.easydesksoftware.com/youformat.htm

What does it do? Well, it's like a format, or a zero-fill, but only the first little bit of the drive - just enough to wipe out the boot, partition and file records. Your drive will be raw after that (you'll need to make partitions and format them).

Once you install XP alone, you'll have 137GB available, but after SP1 you'll have the rest available. You'll have to make partitions out of the rest.

RMA = return merchandise authorization. To send the drive back to the maker for a working one.
 
Don't forget to test the RAM (Memtest86+), PSU (voltages) and check whether all cables and cards are securely installed.

actually that would be pretty far down the list of potential culprits
as Elledan pointed out your leading suspect is the memory
so test it first

there are quite a few Zeroing Utilities on the Ultimate Boot CD
from those integral to the HDD manufacturers diagnostic utilities to DBAN & Autoclave
 
Posting the Stop errors you're getting would be helpful. 0x77's and 0x7B's can point to a faulty motherboard. Googling whatever stop error you get is very illuminating.

Try reseating your drive cables and/or using a known good drive cable. Reseat your memory.
 
ok i try double checking all connections. i have just installed xp again but while installing xp it had given me a few problems during installation, like asking me 2 instert the xp cd when its alrdy there, and saying it cant find a file from the xp cd, but when i click retry it finds the file on the cd and continues installing :( anywaz now i have xp on, when i try 2 install nortons systemwork 2003 the pc just shuts down,i cant install sp1 or sp2 cuz it says corrupt file everytime its near the end of extracting the files!! i used the cd key changer patch which has worked for me all the time but not this timee. sp1 just wont install for me nore does sp2 which i have an original cd for! at the moment i am doing that diagnostic check on the hdd using teh western digital boot disk that one of u mentioned me to download...

all this happened when i used sysprep and installed my mobo... is sysprep the problem or has u guys pointed out, incompatible memory??? i have corsair gaming memory.. not cheap memory at alll!!!!!!! :( thx for your feedbacks soo far

btw how do i test the memory?? i thought that once it boots the memory and proccesor r all fine?? i have a 470watt psu superflower one, hasnt given me any problems beforee :(

is there 1 that can be used on ms dos, using a boot disk?? i am having trouble logging onto windows as it keeps crashing :( thx for your help guys hope it works

these are the errors that all began 2 appear when i did the sysprep and than installed my new mobo.. it happened from my recent os setup with all the files i lost ccuz of these errors.....

u know that bit when u boot from the cd, a blue screen comes up and in there u format and partitiuon the hard drive using the windows xp cd

when it begins 2 copy the installation files into the hard drive ( sill in the blue screen) an error occures and says that the file shell32.dll was not copied correctly( happens around the 2%) along with that error, it says that the file setup placed on my hdd is not a valid windows xp system image

and says that if im installing from a cd, there maybe a problem with it
and it den gives me options to retry or cancell or skip
i use to press enter to retry and it would just carry on the proccess again. it happens randomly within this part.. eva since i changed mobo, it has never installed windows without any errors occuring along the proccess like the one i just mentioned before.. i even sometimes get errors while it is installing the actual operating system, telling me that it cant find a curtain file in the cd!!! damm it this is realy pissing me off!!

by the way has any here used sysprep?? its a tool used when u want to change mobo,s that may use a different chipset to the original chipset that was installed on your hdd????
 
Have you tried simply installing Windows fresh from scratch? That may be your best bet at this point. Sysprep (I don't know this program) sounds like a nice idea but there's no substitute for starting fresh. What was the old chipset and what is the new one?
 
yea i tried 2 install windows fresh many times now but whilst installing i get errors like it cant find specifc file from my windows xp cd, all da details are on my previous post my old chipset is Intel® Brookdale_GL GMCH Chipset (760 mBGA)
and the new one is intel 865 chipset...


i have just tested my memory which is a ddr320 corsair.. 2x 512mb of ram. these memory have worked flawlessly on my old msi mobo which in fact only cost me £25!! anywaz i tested the memory using dat memtest v1.26 and it had found over 3000 errors, it did 7 tests and most of the errors ocured in the 5th test, what am i to do now? what does this mean? does it mean my mobo aint compatible with memory or what? what do i do 2 fix these errors? could this b the problem all along??

Any error you get with RAM tests means that data passing through your system's buses and stored on your HDDs will become gradually or instantly corrupted.

First try those sticks seperately and in different slots. If the number of errors per stick varies wildly with each test, try the RAM in another mainboard (like your old one) and test it again.

It might be a memory incompatibility issue, or the mainboard is just broken.
 
Another possibility is that you fried the RAM with a bit of ESD (static electricity) during the swap. So if running the test in a nothermobo reveals problems - that's probably why. Corsair has a lifetime warranty I believe, check with them about an RMA.
 
update........

yess i know what was the cause of these problems, it was my memory being incompatible with the mobo or the mobo being fucked up anyway. i am using my old mobo and old proccessor has my new proccessor reads at 1600mhz!!! on the old mobo :( but ye i did tests on the memory on the old mobo and it was fine, no errors and i did teh test like 14 times and still no errors occured :)

at the moment im reinstalling windows now, hope it works and is stable, if i is den i thank u guys for helping me out man, i would of still been stuck on what was wrong with my pc. thanks man to all who have supported me :)

one quick note, is there anyway of making my old mobo run a 3200 northwood?
