i was just sittin here and i heard the GPU fan start to vibrate pretty bad. i figured i had to clean the fan shaft so i shutdown and took a look at it, and two adjacent fan blades were just gone. there was the vibration problem.
i grabbed my old Voodoo4 which has a real nice ball bearing fan and cut away some of the housing so it would perform like the GeForce fan inside the heatsink. before i put it on i thought i would put some AS3 on the GPU, cause of course the stock paste was just a waxy gunk after two years. i did a real good alcohol scubbing on the surfaces and replaced the sink with its AS3.
i powered up with the new Voodoo fan and definately felt air moving through the sink, but before i could even boot to windows i got real big vertical stripes in the posting screens. Windows now has all kinds of random globs of offcolor pixels all over the place.
i must have burnt the GPU. i didnt think it was a very stupid idea to try this though. am i wrong?
