Crazy E6600 Temps

Hey guys, I just finished putting together my E6600 setup and I've noticed some really strange temps. I get about 40-42C at idle in TAT, which is normal enough, but I saw them hit 80+C in less than 2-3 min under load using OCCT. I obviously stopped the stress test at that point because I'm not gonna kill a brand new processor. I'm thinking the HSF might not be seated properly and I'll definitely be popping out the pegs and making sure they're in firmly tomorrow. Any other ideas guys (other than buying AS5 which I just placed an order for :))? Thanks.

Specs:

E6600 w/Stock cooling, 1.25V (1.2V actual)
EVGA 680i
Corsair HX620W
Corsair TwinX2x2048C4D
EVGA 8800 GTX

try to stress with Intel TAT, you will see higher temp. With my e6600 oc'ed to 3.6 (50% oc)
watercooled i see around 34 idle and load with intel tat going high up into 70c max for my core temp. Try getting a good aftermarker cooler, the stock cooler just not enough if you plan to oc. BTW you should use core temp to monitor the temp, its better than intel tat.
with you high temp try reseat the hsf, it little too high for you temp with no oc i think.

Hope it help :)

As you have guessed its almost gotta be one of the pins not all the way in, they are a Pain in the Butt espically if you try to install it with the MB in the case.

Anywho, think about a quick lapping of the heatsink and maybe the cpu, you dont need a mirror finish, even just 10 minutes of lapping on each surface will yeild nice results and removes another possbile area of worry.

Yeah, I figured that was probably the case, Bill. I'll pop each of the pins and reseat them when I get off work. I might try lapping the HSF after I get my AS5. Thanks for the help guys.

Bump. I just wanted to say HOLY SHIT, I LOVE C2D! After I reseated the HSF, idle temps dropped to 23-24C and load using OCCT hasn't even cracked 40C. OMFG, this is too sweet! 3GHz here I come!!! :D :D :D Thanks again guys!

TAT. I compared it to CoreTemp and they pretty much read the same. In other news, the 3GHz overclock temps are just as good. Idle temps were only 26-28C and load is sitting at 42-46C right now with OCCT. Should she pass that without any issues, I'll probably bench real quick before running Orthos overnight. After that it's Memtest and hopefully a rock solid 3GHz setup by the end of tomorrow :D

I had problems with my Arctic 7 Pro on a ASUS P5N-E because the heatsink nearest the processor sticks up just high enough to prevent the cpu cooler from sitting flush. I was running upper 60's at 3.0 with an E6600 under full load. I had to bend the bottom fins so it would seat right and I dropped my temps 20 degress.

My 6600 is idling at 55c!!! What's the deal with that? And that's at stock speeds with a stock cooler. Is it just me or does that seem a bit high?

I posted elsewhere about trying to mount a CNPS7700 on the board, but it didn't mount very well. Any ideas?

I'm scared to OC this thing with these temps.

You better not overclock with those idle temps. Thats too high, I would be afraid to game on that.

Reseat the CPU and HS/F. I am overclocked to 3.6 ghz, and I idle arround 35c. Load @ 56 w/ dual Prime95's.
