Cray super computers now for only $200,000

So who's the [H]ardest of the [H]ard.....

Hmmmmm.... I think one can build a ScaleMP supercomputer for a lot less. Max CPUs supported by the linux kernel is 256. It would take (4) 16core 4P systems.

16 x $649.00 ( 6274s )
4 x $745.00 ( Supermicro H8QGi-F )
64 x $14.95 ( DDR3-1066 ECC/Reg )
4 x $129.95 ( 120GB SSD )
4 x $456.95 ( 40GB Infinband Adapter )
1 x $5200.00 ( 40GB Infinband switch )
16 x $800.00 ( ScaleMP Licenses )
4 x $295.00 ( 1200w power supply )
----------------------------
$35,848ish

I could live with a 256 core machine for $36K :D

man my spreadsheets would recalc really fast on that....I could maybe run Word at the same time. :)

I wonder how WCG would run on that platform?

wouldnt you only need 4 licenses not 16....
and you dont need 1200w psu / system...

I bet it could be done cheaper...
[H] needs to pool and make a busi rendering and folding lol

Do not forget the generator $5000.00 for the gen and another $500.00 a month for fuel.

Glad you guys enjoyed(?) this...must say this is also the most responses in only a couple hours time that i've gotten on any forum...lol...

Yep, your new here :D Have some tamales and beer and stay a while ;)

Haha yep I am new. And thanks for the welcome.

I will stay a while. :p

Cool! :)

Nice to have you!

Let us know when you have your boxen switched over to Team 33! ;)

I'd be scared to see the PPD that machine could produce!

So, who is going to use this shopping list ? :D

Nope, licensing is per socket for ScaleMP. Also depends on the type of processor. Socket 771 Xeons are $400 per socket. Another factor is sockets per motherboard. The 8-way E7 Xeons are $1600 per socket  A 8-way Supermicro X8OBN-F with 8 E7-8870 really does not need to be combined into a super computer. Then again two of those would make 160 cores with 320 threads :D

then we need to have a place to site this beast. Any volunteers? :D

There is room in my rack.......

But I would need to update the electric in my house....... and probably duct the heat to the outside.

I would also need to buy a new coutch, as I would be sleeping on it for the better part of a month.

$400 per socket, but the features are so juicy....

That is for dual socket 771 setups. Newer sockets like 1567 or quad+ setups, the prices go up per socket. To link together 2 dual 771 systems, it would cost $1600 for ScaleMP. Totally not worth it as a 4P AMD would setup would out perform it and and cost less. Now 2 4P setups, things become more justifiable: 8 sockets at $800.... $6400 extra to get a 128 core machine. Plus an extra $6200 for a infinbond connection. Adds up in a hurry :(

The license is definitely expensive! However the Infiniband does not need to be that expensive. There are plenty of cheap Infiniband cards on eBay. From $20-$50 will get you a 20Gbps (16gbps real possibly 32Gbps if they can be bonded on the card level) DDR 4X infiniband card utilizing copper cables (cheap as well $10-$20 for decent lengths). Now I am not an expert on Infiniband, but I do know it supports channel bonding so I believe multiple cheap cards could be be bonded in parallel for more bandwidth *if* needed. For F@H even the 1Ghz HT1 links on my 8P allow it to hold its own even against Magny-Cours! So aside from overhead introduced over infiniband by a Virtual SMP environment, I do not think the bandwidth requirements will be very high. A few cheap copper based infiniband cards may be all the bandwidth required.

Glad you all are enjoying planning/creating a 'super computer'. :p

So to link 2 4p boards together it would be about 7 grand?plus 3 grand for 2x rigs, with 96-128 cores? Would we be able to actually fold like that?

About that. If you run linux, it would appear as a sinlge machine with the number of core equal to the sum of all the system installed. As thing for memory. Each systems disk(s) will also appear as available drives on the ScaleMP instance.

I think Windows 2008 R2 database edition only supports 64 CPUs/cores so I do not think running it would be worth it.

Trying to imagine plowing through a regular smp unit with a sub 45 second tpf lol

wasn't there talk of putting a cap on bonus returns? I wonder if we'd be able to make a rig too fast for itself..?

Check with Patriot, i think his rig can. IIRC he posted somewhere that he was doing ~35 seconds TPF on standard SMP but i cannot find the post.

Edit:- Found the post:-Sub 35 second TPF

CTR1, you have no idea how crazy we are here for data crunching. Just in case you didn't hear, this is our forum for Folding@Home, a medical distributed computing project to cure the incurable (mostly cancer research AFAIK). We are [H]ardFolding, team #33 (used in your computer client to ID your team). If you fold, join! If you don't, hang out anyway. But we will lure you into the [H]orde... ;)

Also- are you still in? What ship/station? (FC1~retired here):D

well i have a huge garage, cheap electricity, i can house the beast :D but then again i live in a very anti drug state(washington) so i'm sure i'd have the police showing up at my door once a month with a warrant looking for drugs when my power bill would get reported, lol.

I think the heat signature would be the tipoff before the power. On a thermal camera your garage would light up like the 4th of July!

Just 2 4p's wouldn't be that much, hell most of us have pulled over 900watts at one time or another

i live in a small town that sits smack dab in the middle of the spokane airport and fairchild AFB so theres no choppers allowed here until its military related :D so they rely on the electricity bill as the give away.

You say that as if we fit what is "normal".

900 watts is a bunch of power to pull 24/7 on one device.

It is just normal to us.
