I just upgraded my system and for a few days everything was running smoothly then suddenly, without me changing anything about my system, it started crashing within a few minutes of loading any game I play, Quake 3, UT2004, anything. I'm thinking the problem has to do with my sound card or my video card but I'm not sure, here are my specs:

Windows XP pro sp2
Athlon64 3000
1gb kingston ram
gigabyte k8ns pro
asus radeon 9600xt
sb audigy zs pro

if this is not enough information i can post more, any help would be greatly appreciated.

what temps are you rinning? what PSU do you have and what voltage readings you get... but start from making sure that the fan on the vid is spinning.. and you're right - it might be sound card - I remember having a similar problem.. try putting your sound card in different PCI slot..

Not sure what temps I am running but with a thermaltake venus I am certain that it isn't much. I heard that my motherboard does not report temps correctly. Moving my sound card didnt do a thing. I have a 400watt power sorce but how do I check voltage readings?

First of all, SP2 doesn't screw up UT2k4, I can vouch for that. I've not had a single problem with SP2, in fact. As for your problem, it does sound like overheating is likely.... You're going to want to check your temps with Speedfan or MBM... Those also monitor voltages, but it's better to use a real voltmeter (go to Radioshack and get a $10 pocket multimeter if you don't have one, or check Ebay) to get a more accurate number.... What brand is the PSU? Is it something that came with the case? If so, it's probably junk. Also, you can try running Prime95 and Memtest to see if it's CPU/RAM/motherboard or if it's video card.

I'm glad that your SP2 update went so well that you can safely assume that every single SP2 update on the planet will have no problems. Every computer has a different configuration in both hardware, software and usage so it is very possible that his SP2 update may have had a different affect on his system stability.

Now, since this is a recent problem and more than likely installing SP2 was the only thing he has done to modify the configuration of his computer within the last few weeks (from when it was stable previously) it is reasonable to suspect that SP2 along with DirectX 9.0c could have something to do with the stability in 3d games...

I would suggest un-installing SP2 until it has been thoroughly tested by the world community before installing it again on your machine.

If you insist on keeping SP2 installed on your system you could check the following:
Sound drivers
Video drivers
MB drivers
Game updates
Windows Update (there may already be patches for SP2 out there)

However, it could be hardware related like dragon is pointing out. Follow his troubleshooting steps to eliminate that as a cause (memtest86, prime95, 3dmark, swap out PS, etc)

I would also double check to make sure that the fan is spinning on the vid card as well as the northbridge(if your MB has one).

i fixed it, i dont know how but it doesnt seem to be happening any more.

well the problem is back, ive moved on to windows xp 64bit and i installed all the 64 bit drivers for my vid card, sound card, nic, pretty much everything in my system. I thought that might help get rid of the issue once and for all but once again, WRONG!!
