cpu-z left something behind...

Folks,

Cleaning my Temp folder, I ran into an un-deletable file called cpuz138_x64.sys

I cannot delete it because it is "in use by another program". Apparently, it is associated with CPUID Service.

Funny...I have no trace of cpu-z left installed (supposedly), and, I have no Service running (or not) called CPUID.

How do I get rid of this fragment?

Thanks,

Ken

Didn't help.

I'll try safe mode and see if I can delete it then.

If that doesn't work, I'll rename it (with a non ".sys" suffix) and see if that helps.

That's the kernel driver that it installs. You can reboot, or possibly use a tool like Process Explorer to find the process/service it is running under. Easiest is probably to just reboot.

Then you can delete

EDIT: You couldn't delete it after a reboot? Interesting. Maybe running cpu-z again and closing it properly may help, as it usually removes that service when you exit the program.

CPUID is not only used by CPU-Z and CPU-Z by itself isn't only related to CPU-Z program, there are quite amounts of apps that use CPUID/CPU-Z software to hardware reading as examples Aida64, HWMonitor, Asus RealBench, Perfmonitor and other large amount of programs.

So any of those that use CPUID code can left some CPU-Z trace in the system. I would just check it all the monitoring apps in the system.. =)

Yeah...it's odd.

Last week I started cpu-z, was told there's an update, so I followed the prompts. I used the new one (v1.75.0 which was updated from 1.72.1). Great. I then uninstalled it. I forget if I used the W10 uninstaller or if there's a cpu-z uninstaller. Either way, it seemed to be gone...until I checked my Temp folder.

I have not run cpu-z in about week...since I uninstalled it. Since then, I have rebooted my machine about 2 dozen times, including 4 times this morning. (Changing fans and adding in-line resistors.)

There is no friggin' way this is a remnant from me trying to run it.

Right clicking it (the .sys file) shows it as version 1.0.3.8 if that means anything...

It seems like I may need to reinstall cpu-z, reboot, run cpu-z, reboot, uninstall cpu-z, reboot, then hunt this file down and try to delete it again.

(Either that, or I'll take a sharpie to my screen and cover it up.)

Crossposted. Aha...you may be onto something. I've got a Kraken AIO cooler and I'm running their (NZXT) software, called "CAM". THAT may be using it.

Off to see...

Thanks.

you can also go into admin tools and look for any services related to that and hit disable. Once all of the services are stopped, you should be able to reboot and remove it.
