What is the different between a CPU and an APU? Example: FX-4130 vs. A10-7850K. Which one would be faster and why?
 
A CPU is a slow processing unit that is designed to process very complicated calculations.

A GPU is a fast processing unit that is designed to process simply calculations.

CPUs also have to process lots of simply calculations but they do this much slower then GPUs.

And APU is a combination of a CPU and GPU.

It has 2 parts, one slow part that deals with complicated calculations and one fast part that deals with complicated calculations.

In an APU the CPU part only deals with complicated calculations and passes simply calculations to the GPU to be done much faster.

With a normal CPU the CPU has to waste time doing simply calculations slowly.

APUs are very new and don't have full support yet so the CPU part still ends up doing simply calculations slowly. But this will change over time, and at some point the future APU will be able to automaticity split and send simple calculations to the GPU.
 
Simple answer between those two processors you listed is one has onboard graphics and one does not. Fx 4130 is a quad core cpu. The 7850k is a quad core and has onboard graphics.

The specs on the 7850K says 2 Modules/4 Cores...Does that mean it's just a Dual Core that can act like 4 Cores (ie: Intel's HT)? What am I not getting here?

No it is 4 full cores, the cores are grouped into pairs that share a scheduler.
 
The fx 4130 is the same. It shares some hardware resources per module but is better than Intels HT. If Amd had the per core performance of Intel its shared module would smoke Intels HT.
 
Don't do that. your 660ti is a lot faster than the onboard 7850k onboard gpu as well as your cpu.
Edit sorry not your cpu. thought you were running an Intel cpu.
 
the gpu on the a10 7850k is a 512 shader core device. its essentially a 7750 with different clocks. way less powerful than a gtx660ti. though for diablo 3 it should suffice.
 
Well, then I guess since I just sold my 4770K, I might as well get a G3220 and be happy with it.
 
A g3220 is going to bottleneck your 660ti.
How about a 4430 and be happy with it longer?
 
I just sold a 4340 as well. Am thinking of going the cheapest route for the time being.
 
A 7850K should be fine, and if you want extra GPU power you can add in another R7 GPU and the GPU and APU will crossfire.
 
Buy the cheapest FX6300 bundle from Microcenter (free motherboard) for around 109, then spend about 89 dollars for a refurbished Asus HD 7770 and you have a much much better system than the APU A10-7850K

For the money, it's tough to beat that combo, especially if you just throw in your old 660Ti.
 
Well, that was a silly thing to do...

You know i keep wanting to sell my 3770K and go to something lower end.. I keep wanting to believe that a lowly Haswell celeron (which i do have, needs a board) will suffice.

It doesn't take me long to realize that my 3770K will probably last me about 3 to 4 (maybe even 5) years if they dont come out with some revolutionary thing (just like how the old 2500k (2600k) cpus are still very relevant.

FYI: I never keep any CPU and motherboard for more than 6 months. I consistently recycle. If I ever come across a golden CPU I will keep it for as long as it's still working. For non golden ones, I'm just a channel for them to flow through.
 
The main reason for getting an APU is getting a cheapo gaming system up an running as fast as possible in a small form factor.

There are also some power envelope considerations.
 
Yeap...still debating about the A10 7850K and FM2+ mobo (linked above).
 
op seems very comfortable handling computer hardware. too bad he didn't spend 2 minutes to research what gpu was attached to that kaveri core.

I knew it is an R7 just not exactly what model of R7.
 
just by looking up the current available lineup of discrete r7 cards, the fastest gpu you could of hoped for is the 260x which is a rebranded hd 7790. a product still lightyears behind a gtx 660ti.
 
For D3 a 7850K should more than suffice. That game is not graphically demanding at all. Hell, one of my friends plays it on a laptop. Also, the 7850K is faster clock for clock then any of the FX offerings. Though due to the new process it seems that most overclocks are only getting to 4.5 ghz, which is still better than an FX at 4.9 ghz. The only thing you would lose out on is multithreaded performance since the 7850K is only 4c/4t processor. That is until HSA becomes relevant which will enable the gpu cores to do compute in any application that supports it. That could theoretically put it above even a 4930K in performance in those specified multithreaded workloads.
