during config i specify to only use 50% of the cpu. Yet when i start the program it always uses 100%.

The fans are just too damn loud in the office to have it running @ 100%

Why is it running at full load when i specify 40%?

because set at 40% it should fluctuate between 40-100%. are you using the v7 client? if so you can change the flag to run SMP X (x = number of threads to run)

When running on a dual or quad core CPU you could use less cores to run on (like sirmonkey1985 pointed out with the "-smp x" switch). This will keep the temp's a bit lower probably.

using the switch smp 8 keeps the cpu @ 47% I'll play with a bit, maybe enable another core as long as the fans arent so loud.

Currently have this running on a Proliant 380G5 with an with an Xeon E5440 and a Proliant 360G6 with dual E5550's. However those two are only running at 50%. That one gets loud.

The 380G5 runs @ 100% and dont notice any loise.

Brining on another 380G5 sometime in the next week.

Cool. Sounds like you have some fun toys.

I don't think the CPU usage option actually works unless you use the uniprocessor client. Using the -smp x flag as already mentioned is a good way to curb the client's CPU usage. Alternatively, you could use an affinity changer program like Bill2's Process Manager to automatically lock the F@H processes to certain threads or change their priorities.

You guys know of any tricks or work arounds to possibly set cpu usage by schedule? After 5pm I could care less about the noise that server makes. Sad to see 2 Xeons only working @ 40%

is this the box you use?

You could make two different shortcuts. One with -smp 8 and one with -smp 16. Then, when you get to work, start the smp 8 client. When you leave, close down smp 8 and start the smp 16 client.
