CPU Upgraded, Benchmarks ALOT slower!!!!!

Can anybody help me???? I just upgraded my PC from a 2.4GHZ P4 Northwood to 3.2GHZ P4 Northwood. I ran benchmarks and my cpu isn't even near the benchmarks that were set with the 2.4. Plus 3D is slower also! PLEASE HELP!!
 
Check to see if the heatsink is mounted properly. Sounds like it may be throttling.

Throttling? What is that? I just ran 3DMark05 and my score is nearly 2000 lower than it was! It's a Media Center 876x. I'm using the same heatsink that I had on the 2.4. It's a huge heatsink without a fan. It has a air duct that sucks the heat out of the case.
 
Yep, that is your problem. That heatsink isn't sufficient for your 3.2, you will need at least a heatsink with a fan on it.
 
The Media Center 876x (HP, right?) uses a 865G chipset, according to Google. Try a bios update.

Is it a heatpipe 'sink?
 
Yeah, I thought it might have been okay. Do you think it's same to run like this until I get a good enough HSF?
 
I have the latest BIOS that HP has provided. Will I have to reflash if I install a new CPU?

It's not a heatpipe. It's a big aluminum heatsink with long fins.
 
First, I'd check the bios (or your flavor of temp monitoring) to see if the temps are safe. If not, I wouldn't continue using it (or re-install the 2.4 if you have to use it, until you get a new hsf). If the temps were safe, go for it until you get a new hsf. As far as a bios flash, check the fixes listed in the latest bios. I always (mostly always) run the latest and greatest, they fix the strangest issues sometimes, this may be one of those. duby229 is right on though, check the mounting, and make sure everything is clean, and the thermal paste/grease is applied correctly.

That's a idle, but I just ran a benchmark and the temp went up to 70 celcius. I re-flashed the bios and am getting the same problem. I'm pretty sure it's a cooling issue now.
 
Oh yeah. It's throttling.

I wouldnt runn it like that. If your at 70, that is way too high. Stop using it, or put that 2.4 back in until you get a new heatsink fan.
 
yep it's definitely throttling. Most p4's that I know of start to throttle in the mid 60's celsius. On the bright side, getting suitable replacement won't be hard...pretty much anything active will work. You won't have to drop more than 20 bucks to get it up and running again...just pick up a decent 478 heastink/fan.
 
Also dont forget to get some good silver compound. I think most folks would agree on AS5 (Arctic Silver 5)
 
70 C on a P4 NW should not give significant thermal throttling:

In any case, install and run Throttlewatch while benching just to check.

Would recommend a better cooling solution anyway. I've installed a Zalman Cu-7700 on my HTPC P4 Prescott 550 3.4GHz, which is much hotter than the NW, and it keeps the temps below 70C with max CPU load at low to moderate fan speeds, typically 1200 rpm which is very silent.
 
I just ended up shutting down the computer until I can get a better HSF. I'm positive that's the prob. because I ran the benchmarks when the CPU was idle for a long time and the scores were good at first, but they dropped dramatically fairly fast. Luckily, I have a laptop that I can use until then.

Do you think a stock Intel HSF would work? I know a local PC parts store has one, but it's not the newest one with the copper core. The heatsink just has alumimun fins and of course Intel's active cooling solution. I don't want to get something that is a monster, just something small, easy to install and cools great.
 
my 3.2c sits idle at around 35-40 celcius. under full load it's at around 55. I'd say yours is running too hot.
 
I've decided that I'm going to buy the Zalman 7000B. It's all copper, quiet and is smaller than the 7000. I'm going to pick it up today and get that puppy installed! It looks pretty easy to install too!
 
Still tho, It's HUGE!!! :D

Plus it's quite as a whisper. I think you'll be happy with that beasty ;)
 
The socket is pretty close to the top edge of the board.....

Try it and see if it will fit. If not then you may have to look something smaller
 
Just in case throttling isn't the issue, did you re-install windows? If you did, you might need to re-install your motherboard/chipset drivers.
 
None of this could be the problem... does your motherboard support the FSB that the processor runs at? because it could be clocking down your FSB cause your board can't handle it and automatically clocks down your processor. can you try the heatsink that came with the processor? if you need to, pull the board out of the case or open the top and place the heatsink in and see if you still get that same performance, if you do, then it's not a heat problem. Try it and post back


Edit: Sorry about that, i didn't see the motherboard link above. You should support a 3.2C. Try the heatsink, also look at your processor speed with CPU-z, you should see it lower than 3200.00 Mhz.
 
I've checked the speed and it's showing 2300 Mhz. I guess I'll find out more tonight when I install my new HSF. I want to get the Zalman 7000B, but I'm concerned now that I might have space issues. Eh, we'll see how it goes.

lol, thats what you get for running this thing without a fan......
 
When I first bought my p4 I used the stock hsf and it throttled right out of the box. Took me months to figure that out (my first foray into intel for years) once I grabbed a new heatsink it was smooth sailing.
 
IT FIXED IT!!! ALRIGHT!! I bought the Zalman 7000B Aluminum/copper heatsink. I used Arctic Silver Ceramique. The Zalman was the perfect size, was easy to install and instantly, my temps are at 43 celcius at idle and 55 after running several 3D apps. Benchmarks now show a 27% improvement over the 2.4c. THANKS EVERYONE!!!
 
Unbelievable that this guy got any advice other than "You can't run a 3.2c with a passive aluminum no heatpipe cooler." Too much overthinking going on, people.

I'm about to replace a Northwood 2.26 with a 3.06 that I might push a bit. Should I assume that the stock Intel HSF won't cut it for this either? I have an XP-90 if I need better cooling, but I'd just as soon save it for a later build...

To the ^^^^^ it depends on the stock cooling that you're talking about. If you're getting (or have) the standard Northwood cooler (mine has regular rows of fins and is made of aluminum) it might be a limiting factor, but the NW's generally are pretty cool and don't need much voltage to OC (remember Sudden Northwood Death Syndrome?). If you have a stock Prescott cooler around (with the copper core) it's probably enough to get a decent OC out of it. 3.06's are nice because you don't have to have high-end ram or mobo to make sure you get the most out of the CPU with the 1:1 memory clock. Also the only 533 woody that has HT.

The 4th reply "nailed it down" + no overclocking involved. Threadstarter's problem is solved, everybody's happy, no reason to keep posting here so why don't you just stfu ;)

Saying everybody's happy and then saying stfu in the same sentence is kinda contradictory, you think?

I don't flame and won't check this thread anymore, so I will be happy. I mainly wanted to apologize and own up to missing the non-OC part.

....and yes, I brought up SNDS. Not that I think it was legitimate or that I ever saw it, just in providing context that most Northwoods didn't like excessive voltage. I didn't try to confirm/corroborate or debunk it.
 
Actually folks, it looks like I sorta nailed it on the second post. Minus the mounting part ;)
