CPU overheating suddenly?

My CPU has been overheating, and causing reboots when I run CPU-intensive tasks.

What does it mean when your CPU temps jump into the red almost IMMEDIATELY when starting a CPU-intensive task, and drop down to normal almost immediately after stopping? (I'm reaching the max safe temps for my CPU - AMD 6400+)

Shouldn't it mean that the heatsink is probably unseated? (I poked around, but it seemed ok... At least I couldn't wobble it around, with my hands)
It's not the case cooling, because my case is like a wind-tunnel. (there's no heat-buildup in there *at all*)

This all points to a bad heatsink mount. Your idle temp should be lower than 60c regardless of your setup, and the immediate spike above that is a bad sign too. Don't take offense to this question but since you didn't mention it I have to ask one thing - did you apply thermal paste when you mounted the cooler? If not, that would explain all of this.

Even if it's not wobbly and TIM is applied, it can still be mounted improperly and not making proper contact.

+1 for bad seat. If its all the sudden...and is it a push pin mount? I can imagine 1 pin popping...but still keeping the cooler fairly firm since 3 points determine a plane.

Remove the cooler, clean up old TIM with isopropyl alcohol or some equivalent and re-seat it. Then get back to us.

Bad paste spread/not enough. Its very hard to miss mount an amd cooler.

No pins on it btw. Just A mounting clip

It depends on how good you are at mounting, whether you remove the motherboard from the case to mount the cooler, and which cooler you're talking about. I bought a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 and the mounting bracket let the cooler slide around probably a good half inch in either direction. You could potentially mount it and it feel solidly attached, and a quarter or third of the CPU not be in contact with the base of the cooler at all.

Just another thing to watch out for.

Ive seen people with AMd builds who secure the heatsink onto the cpu, but only clip the bracket onto the 2 holders- as opposed to clipping it on the holders, then wrenching the little lever over to really tighten it down.

well then their idiots or they are using a spring loaded style mount that doesnt require it to be tightened after being hooked up..

as far as the OP'er goes i would reseat the heatsink.. thermal grease may be going bad.. especially if your using the cheapo factory thermal compound..

....thats what I was saying. I was suggesting that that be checked, because the hsf will often not move, but still not be totally secured.
