CPU overheating problem

I'm having a problem with my CPU randomly overheating. When I turn it on it starts out around 50C, and then builds up within a minute or two to about 90C, at which point it turns off. The rest of my components, however, don't have this problem (my HDD runs at 31C and my motherboard runs at 23C).

I've already tried replacing the heatsink from the default Intel heatsink to a Thermaltake CL-P0370, and spread ArcticSliver 5 instead of the default thermal glue. My heatsink seems to hit the CPU correctly (the thermal glue spreads over the CPU) and I only used a pea-sized amount of the ArcticSilver like the instructions say, so I don't know what possibly could be wrong. Any help?

I'm attempting to run an Intel Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield on a ASUS P5N-D LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i. I also have two 120mm case fans.
 
Make sure that HSF is correctly installed (the push pins locked all the way in, etc). Also, make sure that you hooked up the HSF fan. In fact, make sure that the HSF fan is actually working and spinning

What case do you have?
 
I thought a pea sized amount of TIM is too much - it could be acting as an insulator rather than assisting heat transfer.

I'd guess that it's the fitting of the heatsink / TIM application that is the problem.

Also, check voltage - put it to the recommended voltage for your particular chip and don't overclock or run hard tests until you find out the problem.
 
If a pea size doesn't spread evenly, might I suggest a thinner but longer size of TIM...

Check if your cooler is actually touching your CPU

I might also suggest MX2

You temps should be around 30 when idle at stock or maybe 40 OCed and maybe 60-70 at stock/OCed
 
Maybe your proc is fugged. Could be bad contact between he IHS and core. That would cause a steady rise in temps till it shuts itself off no matter how good the HSF is seated.

If you have a way to test that proc in another machine I'd do that. If you get the same results RMA the chip.
