CPU or GPU?

If you were to purchase a system with a budget, would you either have a more expensive CPU and a less expensive GPU, or have a less expensive CPU and more expensive GPU?
For example:
Get a Fx-53 with a BFG 6800 GT
OR
Get a 3800+ with a Asus X800 XT

For a GAMING machine that is needed to last awhile with minor upgrades from here and there

Open to other suggestions as well, thank you
 
It would depend on the type of work I'd be doing on the computer. I'd normally go for the more expensive CPU since I don't care much for the latest and greatest in graphics cards, and chances are I'll replace my graphics card more often than my processor anyway.

I don't see the examples you mention as representative of your question, though. Both those systems would be top of the line, great performing systems.
 
I game... oh btw, you guys know that Sapphire X800 XT is less than 500 bucks on newegg but always out of stock? I wonder how good that is.. to be that cheap for a xt
 
Those two options are pretty close as far as overall performance. If you are a hardcore gamer then hopefully the rest of the system will be fast enought to match. On the newest games like Doom3 i think the limiter is usually the GPU(someone else correct me if i'm wrong)
 
errr the 6800GT from what i hear is better, not to mention the FX-53 kicks some ass, so that seems to be the best option IMO
 
Oh by the way, when would you guys buy a new system? when the nforce4 moboards come out and get a PCIE GPU?? er what would you guys do
 
Like all things, it depends on your intended use. If you don't really intend on gaming, or only light gaming, then I'd go for as much processor as I can and get a decent - but cheap - video card, like maybe an FX5200 or something.

If I was gaming, video card performance is as important as or more so than processor performance. Not to minimize the impact of processor performance, but if you start at a budget of say $200 for CPU, and $200 for video card, if you could double the budget for CPU or Video card - but not both - to $400, then you're going to get more out of the $400 video card than the $400 CPU.

If I was building a computer for nothing but folding, then I would go for raw CPU power and get integrated video.
 
nForce4 + PCI-E video card + PCI-E SCSI card + lower 939 CPU prices = when I buy 939

That is assuming nf4 is a STABLE chipset....
 
Personally I am waiting for the nf4 boards to come out but like they said it is all about what u are looking to do
