So I talked my dad into upgrading to 1155 instead of replacing his dead 775 mobo and I'm looking for some advice.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Computer will be mainly used for basic web browsing, listening to music, you tube videos, and the occasional light game (things like league of legends, nothing too demanding)
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Trying to keep it around $150-160 shipped
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.

I was looking at going with the new pentium g2020 but then I started thinking that the celeron g1610 might work just as good for him. Is there that much of a performance difference between the 2? I can't find any good benchmarks since they just came out not that long ago. For reference he is currently using a c2d e6750.

Also on the mobo side he is partial to Asus boards so I was looking between the h61 and the b75 boards. From what I can tell the b75 boards are usb3/sata6. they arent really that important but for about $5 more it seems it might be worth it for future proofing. I would consider gigabyte or msi boards as well if they are significantly cheaper but they all seem to be around the same range.

Are you using iGPU or do you have a videp card?
What do you need from the sound card (IE would a good sound codex work as well?)

Edited the OP to show the current video card and sound card. The 9800gt is working fine for what he currently uses it for. I would prefer to keep the audigy over using onboard. 8 gigs of RAM is way overkill for him, will be sticking with 4.
 
I'm rocking the G860 in my HTPC right now; very capable CPU. Since he intends to do light gaming, I'd recommend not going any lower than the Pentium.

That was kind of my thinking as well but he actually doesn't do any gaming it would just be me once in a while when I'm there to screw around. Starting to lean more and more towards the Celeron. Will the 1MB of extra l3 cache make that much of a difference on the Pentium? Thats the only difference as far as I can tell.

Yes it makes a large enough of a difference to justify the extra $19 for the Pentium G860. Not to mention that the Pentium G860 is clocked 400Mhz higher than the Celeron G1610 which will make for the fact that SB is slower than IB clock for clock.
 
Just the info I was looking for. So how about the difference between the Pentium G860 and the IB G2020? The SB is 100MHz faster and they are the same price on Newegg.

The two CPUs will perform basically the same. The G2020 will uses a bit less power but there's a higher chance of incompatibility considering that it's a relatively new CPU.
 
What do you think the chances of that mobo not posting at all with the G2020 are? The Asus compatibility list says it is supported but only since the latest bios. I would really hate to have to take mine apart just to get a working cpu to update the bios. I guess the g860 is looking like the way to go.
 
Man I'm torn. Part of me wants to just get the g860 just so it's not a pain in the ass if the motherboard doesn't post, but I really hate to pay the same price for an almost 2 year old cpu. I guess I'll just suck it up and get the 860.
