Hello all

Almost 6 months ago i purchased a new system moving back to an intel rig. My problem is that i was installing a dual boot OS (HD already installed when i built the machine) and my woman dragged me out of the house and i left the computer on before all drivers/monitoring software was installed. I was out for maybe 2 hours and returned home and finished installing monitoring software and the cpu (q9450) was running at 253 C. I shut her down and checked the heat sink and it was set without any bubbles and only a thin layer. The chip also didn't appear to have any burn coloring. The computer will post and start to boot windows but freezes on the loading screen.

I have been building computers for along time PII is my first build i think... I am also in school for mechanical engineering. I only say these things as to avoid some of the harshness occasionally sprinkled upon people nowadays.

My machines stats are:
foxconn x38a
intel q9450
4GB kingston 1066ddr2
2 ATI 4850
and 2 power supplies (reg + vga)
the rest i think is standard enough in most machines nowadays.

My question is do you think it could be just the sensor fried (as i doubt this because failure to load windows), Or do you think intel would replace it ? OR just in general an alternative to shelling out another 300 bucks for a chip.

A poor unemployed full time student thanks you from the bottom of his pockets for any replies/suggestions.
 
It would seem to me that if it POSTS/starts to boot that the hardware isn't a problem.

Have you tried reinstalling windows?

Did you just say 253C? That's almost 500F. I doubt that would happen.
 
that chip should throttle long before it hits anywhere near that temp....i would suspect its not an accurate temp reading and look elsewhere for the problem.

check to make sure all your BIOS settings are correct, and reinstall windows.

if it were accurate and the chip somehow fried, an RMA should be issued without problem.

It is almost impossible to damage an intel cpu from heat , it will just shutdown, cool off and should be good to go. It is impossible if the heatsink is installed properly and you did not say you found any issues along those lines.

Check your bios settings, make sure your SATA setting are correct, you will need sp2 for XP if any AHCI controller functions are enabled, back off any overclock and double check your memory settings.

Not quite sure what you where doing there, do a repair install of the windows if XP. or boot the other OS or boot from the CD and just get a clean single OS installed to verify your hardware.

Your monitoring sw (speedfan ? ) was attempting to give a value for a sensor that is not actually there and thus giving an insane reading. It is highly unlikley your hardware is damaged and I think you have a software/driver issue. At worst a bad memory stick, maybe. It occurs to me that a memtest86+ boot disk would verify all your critical hardware for functionality. I would dl and burn one and boot from it asap and you will know right away if you are in trouble or not.

The system should shut down long before that kind of temps. What OS did you install and what OS are you running? Have you tried the repair on the Windows disk?
 
ahh sorry i forgot to mention some info, its finals week and am running on less sleep than normal.
OS is xp (same for 2nd hd).

I have not tried reinstalling windows but neither of the 2 xp's will finish loading, they just freeze as sometimes overclocking will do to a few systems ive had.

This chip has not been overclocked more than just getting my mem frequency up to 1066, roughly 21 mhz, so mild as to not actually be an overclock. (this motherboard has strange settings for memory and leaves it at 999)

And yes 253 C was the reading i am getting in Bios hardware monitor and also when it was already running xp the foxconn monitor program. And i know that is utterly ridiculous as to why i suspected a sensor gone haywire.

I will go though my bios settings and see if anything looks suspect (again) and i will try to install windows again, but i fear that is not the case. (Slipstreaming xp sp3 from DVD) so shouldn't have too many problems with new hardware. I have a memtest disk laying about somewhere, ill give that a shot also.

i will update when i get xp on her again (or not), and thanks for all the input


Edit: I reset all settings in bios and bumped up my mem voltage as its speced higher than mb's standard. and my cpu core goes back to typical 36 C reading but am running in a post loop. Will try a few things and get back to you.

Edit 2: haha boot loop seemed to be caused by crusty old memtest86 boot disk from several years ago. Windows booted and seems alright. Thanks for your input all

Problem solved.

Although im quite curious as to what setting in the bios could cause the cpu thermal sensor to completely fubared.
I had been through the bios for hours on end and changed as i thought was nearly all settings about, but not a full reset. Its either the finals or im losing it :) again thanks for all the help.
